Off state maintained roads just 15 minutes from shopping & exploring in Spruce Pine and Burnsville, and just 48 miles from Asheville, Conley House is a modern mountain gem with plenty to do!

Staying at Doug’s Way puts you in the heart of it all, and our interactive guidebook turns your trip into a treasure hunt, leading you to the region’s best-kept secrets.

Spruce Pine is also the home of the National Mineral Museum and historic Dellinger’s Grist Mill (1867).

Outdoor Adventures

Paddle or float down the Toe River, cast a line in clear mountain streams, play a round at scenic mountain golf courses, or explore Lake James and Brad Ragan Park. For more thrills, try zip lines through the treetops or cool off tubing on a lazy river. In winter, ski or snowboard at Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain, or Hatley Pointe — each a fun day trip away!

Food & Drink
+ Enjoy locally owned restaurants and cozy cafés in Spruce Pine, Burnsville & Little Switzerland, sip wine at hillside vineyards, sample craft beer at mountain breweries, or pick heritage apples and traditional options at the Orchard at Alta Pass, also known for their live music, museum and gift shop!

Whether your day ends with a mountain sunset, a glass of wine, or the Milky Way overhead, Doug’s Way is the perfect base for your Blue Ridge adventure.

The entire house and grounds are available to guests with the exception of the first floor of the detached artist studio. (Guests have access to the upstairs portion through the sliding glass doors found by going up the stairs and around the back of the studio.)

Directions and access instructions will be emailed to you prior to arrival.

A vehicle is necessary for getting around the area.

PROXIMITY
- Ingles Market, a full-service grocery store with traditional, natural and organic selections and a full-service pharmacy, is 12 miles from the house.
- Walmart is 12 miles.
- National Mineral Museum is 15 miles.
- Closest eat-in/take-out option at 4.8 miles.
- Downtown Spruce Pine & Riverside Park is 9 miles.
- Hospital & ER is 8.6 miles.

DRIVEWAY
The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars and Mini-Coopers, etc. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Guests may park on the lower part of the driveway if they would prefer. Four-wheel drive is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter. Chains for tires are another good option if you are visiting in the winter and you are concerned about getting around. The driveway is plowed when there is snow or ice. If you have any questions, please be sure and let us know.

Note: Four-wheel drive is not required, but is helpful when there is snow or ice. In cases of winter weather, if you do not have four wheel drive, we recommend parking at the bottom of the driveway.

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS
The key to driving in the mountains, especially steep gravel passes, is to drive with confidence and keep your momentum. If you are driving on a road that is steep or problematic go low and slow - about 6-12 miles an hour - and do not stop. Also, GPS is fairly accurate for businesses, but for residences and small mountain roads it can be inaccurate. We suggest using our directions to get to the cabin initially. If you have questions about how to get somewhere, please let us know. We are happy to help!

PENLAND & THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The home was built by artist/sculptor Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the founder, Lucy Morgan, retired.

Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. This developed into a cottage industry that helped to improve the circumstances of these women and also gave birth to Penland.

The school now provides instruction in all areas of craft from weaving, pottery, glass and ceramics to metalwork, printmaking, letterpress, photography and much more. The campus occupies 420 acres on the mountain at the other end of the same road as Conley House. Visually inspiring all by itself, the campus is open for tours by appointment and has a catalog of courses that are open to the public and are designed for a range of skill levels.

Also open to the public is Penland Gallery, which offers fine craft in all media made by skilled craftspeople from all over the world. The school also has a coffee shop and gift shop! They love to have visitors, so stop on by! Because of the school and the natural beauty of the mountains, the area is filled with artists and craftspeople, making it a truly unique area of the country that you'll want to explore.

Didn't Want to Leave!

It was wonderful. The house is set on a ridge with a fabulous view of Mt. Mitchell. The interior is lovely and filled with pieces created by local artists. All of the furniture--beds, sofas, etc.--are handsome and very comfortable (even for people with "grumpy" backs). Kitchen and bathrooms are very well stocked with just about everything you might need. I give this property an A+++ and we are picky!

WHAT A VIEW - AND WHAT A UNIQUE ARTIST CABIN

We travel quite often and have to say this rental property is now at the top of our list. This home and yard was immaculate upon our arrival mid July 2024 in cleanliness and organization. The view of the Blue Ridge Parkway from every area is awesome. The floor plan was exactly what we were hoping for my wife and I and another couple. With two separate huge bedrooms, king beds, great baths, views and all connected with an open common area/kitchen. No to forget the detached Studio Apartment. The kitchen was my favorite place to spend most of my time. Equipped with a complete French Press coffee bar, professional grade appliances, cookware and utensils I didn't need to bring ANY of my gear. I was able to prepare several new delicious dishes for our friends while taking advantage of a complete pantry of spices and other condiments. Also, just around the corner was a variety of fresh herbs including regular & Purple Basil, Oregano, Parsley, Mint, Rosemary +++. Our plan is to come back in the Fall or early winter and hunker down again for a week or so and do very little while enjoying this amazing retreat. Chef Don, Family & Friends

We loved our stay near Penland School of Craft. The property was easy to check into, had a comfortable open floor plan, and an incredible long range Mountain View. Both rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. Lisa also had a packnplay for my 1.5 year old son which was nice. The landscaping is gorgeous, and we were able to pick fresh blueberries, blackberries and mint right in the property. I hope to come back soon!

Art Gallery Vibes with Heavenly Views

My daughter took a week long summer camp at Penland Craft School so we decided to make a vacation out of it and stay nearby with the grandparents. The location of the rental was perfect being just 10 minutes from the Penland campus. The house itself was beautiful, surrounded by trees and flowers and humming birds and bunnies, with stunning views from every room. The layout is perfect for two couples and one child/teen with two primary suites, one which has a pull out sofa. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was provided, the beds were comfortable, there were games, books, and beautiful pottery and art everywhere. Bring groceries because the remote location is not close to many shopping or dining options, but it's worth the peace and quiet.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

At 3600 feet above sea level, the view is fantastic and the weather tends to be mild even in the depths of summer.

THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The house was originally two cabins. Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the retirement of its founder Lucy Morgan, connected the two cabins with a living space and made a home for his family. His studio and many of the original touches can still be seen, including the railings made by his son, Bill Brown Jr. who is now a studio artist.

Having been a resident artist and studio coordinator at Penland not long after Bill Brown retired, Rick Smith admired the property for years. When it became available, he and his wife Lisa knew they had found something special!

Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women, teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. They now offer classes in all media and are the oldest and largest crafts school in America.

The history, beautiful surroundings, slower pace, artwork and the connection to the craft community all make Conley House quite exceptional! From the handmade cabinets and sinks to the stonework, artwork and tableware, you won't find another property like it . . . and, of course, it has a "million dollar view!"

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

We like to make it easy, because traveling can be stressful. By providing the basics like herbs and spices, flour, sugar and cooking oil, plus all the kitchenware and appliances you'll need, as well as things to help you relax, such as an assortment of teas, bath salts and infused bath oils our guests relax, get in vacation mode much faster and enjoy their stay more.

One the aspects of the house that sets it apart is all the attention to detail. From the complimentary bowl of chocolates and bath salts to the original artwork and craftsmanship, Conley House is not like any other vacation rental. Our guests often tell us that we "thought of everything!" We take pride in that, because we strive to make your stay something you will remember for years to come.

Conley House is clean, very private and has unobstructed views! It is located in a safe community of mostly studio artists and craftspeople. Being just 15 minutes to shopping, good restaurants and cafes, it is conveniently located, too.
