150m to Harbour: Cosy, Charming Fisherman’s Cottage

Shrimp Cottage is a tastefully refurbished Grade II Listed fisherman’s cottage in Brixham’s famed ‘Fish Town’. Designed to provide a distinctive and comfortable space for couples. Tucked back just 150m from the wonderful hustle and bustle of the harbour, in the beautiful conservation area, and just a 2 minute walk to the quayside and southwest coastal path. Superb location to explore all that Brixham has to offer, yet romantic and well appointed to lure you back to relax and just be.

We try to think of everything that we appreciate and hope for in a getaway and do all that we can to provide that for our guests. Designed to be supremely inviting, comfortable and memorable with everything you will need for a week or two.

Our pretty blue and white cottage is perfectly imperfect to us and combines many traditional charming features, with some lovely modern comforts. Shrimp Cottage comprises a small entry lobby with part-glazed wooden stable door after which the ground floor is entirely open plan and makes for both a sociable and highly functional setting. Flooring in the whole downstairs area is traditional limestone, with rugs for a homely feel. More elemental features draw together the old and the new with reclaimed wood shelving to the tops of the rustic kitchen tiles, beams, bar and some furniture. There is a brand new fitted Symphony kitchen with stainless steel square sink and tap. A brand new Kenwood integral fridge, gas hob, Hotpoint electric oven with extractor fan. There is a brand new compact Russell Hobbs freezer located in the adjoining utility area/rear lobby, which also houses a convenient washer/dryer and ironing facility. The kitchen is well equipped with a brand new microwave, Breville toaster and kettle plus Dolce Gusto pod coffee maker. Also provided is an extensive range of cookware, pans, cutting boards, knife set, utensil set, dinnerware, glassware and cutlery.

There is a farmhouse style dining table and chairs for enjoying meals, and lounge area with comfy new sofa, arm chair and window seat options to relax in. These all surround the beautiful traditional open stone fireplace with handy electric fire as the focal point. There is a new LG Smart TV with Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc and PlusNet WiFi which works very well if you need to combine some remote working with your getaway.

Original wood stairs, freshly painted, lead to the middle floor (channel your inner mountain goat for best results: these steps are typical of fishermen’s cottages and a little steep!). You will find the light and airy rustic bathroom with new enclosed walk-in rainfall shower, wc, sink and vanity. There is a good size privacy window allowing natural light to flood in and rustic distressed ceramic floor tiles compliment the space. Plenty of storage with shelves and cupboard to place various cosmetics.

Guests will enjoy relaxing in the loft bedroom bursting with character from the beams, refinished original wood floors and exposed stone feature wall. Furnishings have been tastefully selected or upcycled with a nod in the rustic luxe direction, blended with a fresh and calming decor palette. The sleek and new free-standing bath tucked in the corner provides a moment of sanctuary whenever you wish to indulge. Plenty of fluffy towels, and premium bath products are on hand as well as cosy robes to lounge in. A feature driftwood mirror, dressing area, seating, plenty of storage and plenty of natural light from two windows provide a wonderful space to get ready for the evening. The double bed has a brand new memory foam mattress and is made up with quality linens to beckon a restful night’s sleep.

The beach and harbour is our back garden - literally 150m away!! We often grab a coffee, or take a picnic/bottle of something delicious down to one of the numerous benches dotted along the pretty quayside pathway, or along the very start of the Breakwater Pier (a lovely sheltered sun trap!). Breakwater beach is a little gem with a sea wall perfect for taking in the views and some sunshine while you listen to the sound of the waves gently lapping.

Check in is a breeze using your smartphone to unlock and lock the door using our Yale Linus Smart Lock and app. This is convenient for guests as it means they can check-in without having to coordinate or liaise with a key holder, it is more secure as there is no keypad code which could be seen by passers by, and no keys to lose. A specific link with invitation for the booking is text to the guests several days in advance of check-in.

For ‘dropping off’ your luggage, it is an accepted practice to briefly pull up outside the cottage where the road slightly widens. We often then find a parking space on the road a little further up Ranscombe Road, or on Wall Park Road which is left at the top of Ranscombe Road.

Fisherman’s cottages tend to have low beams and steep stairs. Shrimp Cottage is set over three floors with two short flights of stairs - not many stairs, but they are a spiral and take some getting used to, so please use caution and give consideration to this prior to booking to ensure you are comfortable with this ‘feature’.

Of course we, like you, continue to take the Coronavirus risk seriously and want to assure all guests that our professional cleaning services are implementing even more rigorous cleaning and sanitising. Every moment between check-out and check-in is utilised with safety in mind, and for that reason we are unable to offer early check-ins or late check-outs. We also provide additional anti-bacterial disinfectant spray, plenty of anti-bacterial wipes for our guests to use as often as they see fit. We absolutely want our guests to feel safe, confident, comfortable and relaxed about their getaway. Here’s to continuing to navigate safely through the challenges of Covid in order to enjoy precious and much needed time away with loved ones.
