Do you want to really experience Eleuthera?
Look, there are probably a lot of places to stay in Eleuthera. You can sterilize it, pretend you are in the US. But that is not what you should go to Eleuthera for. This home is the real deal. It is made to take in the breezes and the sounds of the sea, right down to the small conch shells that serve as cabinetry handles. There is a lot of history in this place, and it is laid before you in the quasi-library that is the main part of the home. If you have children (ours are ages 5 and 7), they will absolutely love all there is to absorb here. Let go of your conceptions of what a luxury vacation should be, and stay in this place. Bring a snorkel+fins, be brave and start swimming 50 feet right in front of the house, and follow a trail of towering coral pillars teeming with life. Doon, the owner, is a local celebrity that lives closeby, and she knows what's up. You won't regret your stay here.

Tranquil Beauty!!!
Absolutely fabulous vacation! Please note that our intent was a relaxed family time alone but convenient to our needs for meals or adventure if we cared to venture out. I love staying at a Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton or the like... but thats not what we wanted here. If those places are feature films, our stay was a song or poem... different and unique but so wonderful in many respects. The home was hand built by the owner who has lived on the property since 1975. The home is decorated from an accumulation of generations of furniture, libraries, and art over the years creating a collection of the family that loves they're home. The views are astonishing from every room. Not all the bedrooms are airconditioned. Now that might scare away some, but I will tell you the multidirectional breezes and fan in each bedroom made for incredible sleep... we were all always comfortable waking very rested. Given all the activities and sun, most times we all fell asleep around 9 pm and were awake for the sunrise. The wrap around elevated patio is spacious and affords great lounging. The homeowner Doon is a fascinating person and very gracious host. She was onsite in a small home a little down the beach and always available for a question. We all found her so attentive and interesting as a long resident of Eleuthera. The beach at the home and both adjoining beaches were beautiful and we had them virtually to ourselves. There were so many things to inspire our time on the beach and the property that we only ventured away one day in 7... for 13, 16, and 19 year-old's, that says a great deal about the opportunities... snorkeling, skim boarding, kayaking etc.. The kids saw loads of fish, swam with a turtle and very close to a friendly dolphin. We cooked several times on the property and you'll find convenient grocery options a short 3-5 minute drive away. Everything necessary to cook or barbecue were there and we shared great meals. We did venture out and really must give high recommendations to The Buccaneer and LaBouganvilla. The meal at the 1648 Restaurant was exceptional but our decision to eat at 6pm on the balcony made for a really uncomfortable experience given the heat... we stayed in July just after the Bahamas opened from COVID19 and inside dining was not permitted. In closing... all of us unanimously loved our experience, would return in a heartbeat, and accomplished exactly what we set out for... great family time, unique adventures, & a recharged spirit!

On the beach? This is it.
If you dream of going to sleep with the sound of the waves in your ears, and waking up with the sound of waves in your ears, this is ideal. It’s a little rustic, but you can’t go to sleep and wake up that way in a fancy condo.

comfy house that is close to the beach and to town
We loved the location: very easy beach access and only a ten minute drive to town for supplies. We were a party of six, four adults and two children and the house worked perfectly for us. The cabana and shower right on the beach was ideal! The large deck around the house became a wonderful outdoor, additional room. We couldn't have been happier.

Beach home with so many amazing personal touches
Such a phenomenal beach home. Living space large enough for 5 adults on my trip. We never felt on top of each other. Full kitchen to prepare any meal. Immediate access to beach literally steps away. Kayaks and snorkeling gear on site as well as paddle boards. Beach is clean, has soft sand, clear blue waters. Just loved it. More than we expected but exactly what we hoped for

Secluded Paradise
Wonderful stay. Our hostess was very gracious and attentive to the details of a wonderful beach getaway. Couldn’t find a better location on the island (nestled between two of the most distinct and enjoyable beaches on the island). The home had all the amenities to allow us to relax, albeit having so much outdoor living space and wonderful breezes limited indoor times to a minimum. We truly enjoyed the cabana by the beach which always stayed shady and captured the cool ocean breeze despit the heat of the day. Lucked out with clear skies and a full moon! Amazing. Recommend the vacation to all who are looking for a peaceful break from daily life where worries drift away.

Perfect for rest & relaxation!
We stayed at Causarina Bay in February of this year and loved our time there. I still wake up disappointed that I'm not back in the master bedroom where I woke to a gentle breeze, the sound of waves, and a view of sunrise. It made every morning special. The house was a great location and had everything we needed. Access to French Leave beach was easy, we walked to town several days, and loved the privacy. Having rented on Eleuthera before as well as in the Abacos several times, we've seen many kinds of rentals. This was comfortable, spacious, and had everything we needed (ex: good wifi, coffee makers, sharp knives, beach & bath towels). The outside space - both cabana and deck - were ample and inside was very comfortable. Taja was communicative and responsive and very easy to work with. It's a great getaway if you're looking for peace and quiet. We'd definitely go back.

Great beach and location but all downhill from there.
Arrived around 4PM to a locked house and no key under any of the dozen or so conch shells we searched. Calls and emails to Taja went unanswered for 1 1/2 hrs. Our neighbors in the Round House next door had the same problem. After almost 2 hours, the cleaning lady finally arrived to let us into a house which had not been cleaned or prepped and had no electricity (we lit lots of candles). In the morning still no power. As a result, all perishables had to be tossed. We did a walk through and were very disappointed. The house is beyond rustic and in need of a serious up-grade. If there were any electrical or plumbing codes, they were not followed. Many cupboard and closet doors are sagging, off their tracks, broken, etc. Notes are taped to many of the doors and windows. One note on an outside door says, "To close the door, push in gently, lift up 1/2" until it fits, then lock w/the wooden handles." The four bedroom house is very small. Eight people would be stumbling over each other. One bedroom is outside in a basement like area with no direct access to the main house. The hot tub was not usable. The outside areas and under the decks are congested with old building materials and junk in general. Electricity continued to be a problem. Calling the listed number for the power co. resulted in lots of busy signals. We finally drove into town and found the location of the office to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, we were without power nearly half of our total time in the house. We have rented many vacation homes over the years. This was, by far, our worst experience.

pleasant, beautiful location and serene
Our family stay was great here, and the location was everything. French Leave Beach was our favorite beach, as well as the Twin coves beach which was all walking distance from the house (a huge plus). The only thing I would say, just to help the owner make a better air bnb stay for large groups or families, is that it would be nice if some kitchen utensils and necessities were updated, such as the coffee maker (which was broken), as well as get new pans, maybe add a few other things like new kitchen knifes etc. We love to cook, so that was a bit annoying to deal with when you are staying in an isolated area and want to cook properly for a whole family. I found the kitchen lacking some key things. The "welcome book" with all the information needed for our stay, also needs to be updated. It was disorganized with many pages missing or not in order, so we couldn't use it. But that's really all. There is no AC on the top two bedrooms, in case anyone is wondering, but it was very breezy so it didn't bother us as much. The owner was very nice and solved some issues that came up during our stay, as quickly as she could. We also LOVED Cindy who works for the property owner and helped us with extra cleanings and fun island information. We would definitely go back and rent again if the kitchen was fine tuned :-) Loads of love and thanks again !

Lower your expectations
Unfortunately, disappointing. First the pro's: Beautiful location, including stunning beaches. Nice cabana. The house has the potential to be very nice. The con's: First, at least in the Summer, it is uncomfortably hot and humid. Ocean breezes only go so far, and then only if they are blowing. In fairness, the house was advertised as having only two window units, so this is more an observation than a criticism. However, the house was advertised as having wi-fi, satellite TV, and a DVD player. The first was spotty, the second got only two channels other than shopping, and the third simply didn't work. I didn't go to the Bahamas to watch TV but I would not have picked this house had I known the truth. The house also needs an exterminator. Lastly, we had only one functional toilet for five days, and the second toilet barely worked (taking at least fifteen minutes to re-fill). The place needs work, especially for the price.

Tranquil idyll
A totally unique experience! Somewhere between the feeling of being in a (really comfortable) tree house or being on a boat, this wooden gem blends perfectly into the surrounding environment. Comfortable and lived-in, it feels like a home, which is the best for a family vacation. 360 decks means there is always an angle where you can catch the breeze, the beach is right outside (we saw turtles daily!) and with sunbeds and hammocks galore, plenty of spaces to relax. This was one of the most relaxing vacations we ever had, our girls loved it as did we!

Another fabulous family vacation
Our second stay at Casaurina Bay. Two years ago our family of 8 had the best family vacation ever here. Our second visit, now with a toddler, proved even better. Casaurina Bay house is the quintessential beach house. A casual, informal house that is the perfect combination of privacy with convenience to town, terrific snorkeling right off shore, kayaks, paddle board and baby equipment. For our family, there is only one place to stay on Eleuthera. It feels like home.

Magical Week in a perfect place!
We just returned from a truly magical week at Casuarina Beach House. We spent our days snorkeling in the unbelievably clear, blue water off the beach right outside the house. Our nights were spent watching the stars illuminate the sky and listening to the waves break. All of our family agreed, this was the best vacation we have ever taken - it gave us the time and place for us to reconnect as a family and with the island's rhythms. As for the house, it is situated perfectly to catch the gorgeous sea breezes, so despite the dog days of August heat, we were cooled and comfortable with these breezes. Plus, there are so many places to sit and watch and listen to the ocean both inside and outside the house, making it hard to leave Casuarina. But be sure you do, because this island has so many natural wonders to explore and experience. Things not to miss: Lighthouse Beach, Cocktails and sunset at 1648 at French Leave, swimming at Ten Cay and Receiver's beaches, kayaking and turtle viewing on Edwin Lake, and the Friday night fish fry in Governor's Harbor. We can't wait to go back to Casuarina. Don't miss out on this charming, magical place.

Perfect
My wife and I stayed at the beach front house in early February. It was a last minute reservation and Taja couldn’t have been more helpful. She was quick to respond (less than 24 hours via e-mail) before the trip to answer any questions and responded within an hour once we were at the house. Taja even called the house phone on the night we arrived. The house was clean and ready for our arrival. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed to cook a full meal and make some delicious drinks. We enjoyed breakfast every morning on the deck while the sun rose followed by an early swim on what seemed like a private beach, we never saw another person walking along Casuarina Bay. The house was fantastic and I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling with a large group.

Idyllic stay!
We stayed in this gorgeous Bahamian house for a perfect period in January - unbeknownst to us in advance, Junior Junkanoo, an incredible Bahamian festival, was going on the Saturday night in Governor's Harbour, which was such a special cultural treat to be able to experience. The house was perfectly located for our quick trips in to town, not just for Junkanoo but for groceries and the Fish Fry on Friday night. The children had an amazing time playing on the beach... body-surfing, sand-castle digging, and inventing so many unique and wonderful games. We were the only people, which was just perfect to allow them to play uninhibited all day long. At the same time, we truly soaked up just being able to lounge on the beach-chairs and watch them expend all their energy running up and down. :-) The house had such character and charm - a truly special place! Cannot recommend more highly for a return trip to Eleuthera.

Bahamian Rhapsody
If you are looking for an authentic Bahamas experience, you need look no further than this glorious compound. These hand-built wooden homes are comfortably furnished, charmingly personal, and artistically decorated with the owner's natural treasures. The secluded location offers total privacy, a picture perfect beach, delightful snorkeling and kayaking and total relaxation. Yet, it is minutes from Governor's Harbour and the best restaurants. I took my family of 7, and to a person, each proclaimed it "the best family vacation ever!" I would go back in a heartbeat, with the whole gang, a group of friends, or just my husband. Every bedroom is beautiful. Ours had views on three sides, the luscious tradewinds keeping it comfortable, even in August.

The Best Family Vacation Ever
Elegantly rustic, this very personal handmade wood house sits across a sand path from one of the prettiest beaches on the island. Perfect for people who love to live with the windows open, in informal comfort. Nice linens and towels, charming art, a well-stocked kitchen, kayaks and a beachside tiki hut all contributed to our enjoyment. Just minutes from the colonial town of Governor's Harbour where we bought lobster and fish from the fishermen at the bayfront and supplies at the grocers, but totally private. We had the beach to ourselves. The snorkeling was fantastic right in front of the house. There were 7 of us as well as a small dog and everyone's room was perfect. We cooked almost all of our dinners at the house, and ate lunches at Tippys and The Beach House, which are a few miles down the road. The owner is very generous and knowledgable. Her island style and sensitivity to the environment are exactly our own! We can't wait to return.

My five longtime friends from highschool and I, spent six wonderful days at this captivating place in paradise !! the house had everything we needed, very nicely decorated and the views breathtaking! My wife and I spend 8 day...
My wife and I spend 8 days (not enough) at the end of March/beginning of April 2010. I wish I could wake up in that bed and see the ocean like that everyday. The house is top notch in every way, much to big for a couple, but we enjoyed the space! Furnishings and fixtures were perfect. The beach is right there across the track of a road that eventually leads you to paradise. We enjoyed the jungle bush out back and the feeling of total isolation. Lots of birds, lizards and the occasional potcake to keep us company though. The beach is gorgeous; wished it had been warmer to enjoy it more.Interesting stairway to the upstairs; we developed many new muscles! We loved the place!

The time was special. The house issituated on the Eastern side of the island off a hidden unpaved access road that leads directly to the house. To the left of the house,is one of only two other structures built along the quarter-milestretch of beach on which it sits– it’s a small, one bedroom cottage, whose occupants were the only other people we saw on the beach duringour one week stay. The house itself has an expansive deck upon which we ate a few meals, drank many a bottle of Bahamian Rum and generally enjoyed views of thesparkling turquoise ocean through the palm trees. The home’s finishings and furniture are comfortable, but not extravagant. It is tastefully decorated in a manner that is entirely consistent with the simple natural beauty of the place. I happily took several naps on living room couch and seating six for dinner in the dining areas was no problem at all.No more than fifteen meters off the beach's shore are coral headswhere you can snorkel and see a variety of fish. One of our friendsis an experienced spear fisherman, and he actually caught a couple ofGrouper which we grilled for dinner one night. There are also acouple of ocean kayaks on the property which we were also able to takeout to sea.By day we sunbathed, played and ate by the highly convenient andfunctional Cabana built at the property’s base above the high waterline. Nightly, we fell asleep to a gentle but persistent breeze rustling through the palm trees and the echo of ocean waves crashingalong the beach. When we chose to introduce a bit of civilization into our lives, wetook a quick trip into town for groceries, internet and even fine dining. Dolce Vita has really special Conch Spring Rolls that shouldn’t be missed, and the food at Tippy’s is generally excellent. On Friday night, we were smart enough to leave th

Serenity! We had a wonde...
Serenity! We had a wonderful stay at the Beachfront House. Perfect weather. There was no need to explore the Island or look for other beaches. The beach was stunning and virtually deserted. The old Club Med beach is equally impressive—we strolled along its entire length without meeting a soul! The swimming was perfect; we enjoyed snorkeling among the coral reefs just off the beach. We walked to Governor’s Harbour for supplies; the fresh lobster bought on the dock was a special treat. The House was very comfortable; the soothing breezes were superior to air conditioning! Alas, we could only read a handful of the books in the remarkable library.

I grew up on Hog Island (...
I grew up on Hog Island (now Paradise Island) near Nassau and watched the place slowly deteriorate over the years. Our stay at Casuarina Bay was like coming home again, the way I remembered it from the fifties and sixties...even better in some ways. It is truly a magical unspoiled spot. On the practical side, we loved the informal, cozy design of the wooden house especially the upstairs southern bedroom open to the breezes and getting both the rising sun in the morning and the setting sun at night. We had brought several books but ended up browsing the fantastic house library instead. Everything worked perfectly, and Edgar the caretaker was very helpful. Can't wait to go back.

Dear Taja and Family, BL...
Dear Taja and Family, BLISS is not something easily found, but Chris and I found Cassurina Bay to be a rare find, a gem. This is what we were seeking in terms of bailing out of the maddening crowds, a true spot of paradise. The Bahamian people could not be more delightful. We felt like 2 children contiually enchanted by each experience...the food, beaches, snorkeling or just hanging at the Beach House was a treat. I preferred the wild Atlantic side and Chris the calm waters of the Carribbean. There is a yin and yang energy in Eleuthera. Oh yes, and the Hog Fish at Coco Di Mamma's was sublime as was the service. We will be back! A week did not seem long enough, so next time we will plan a longer stay. Thank you for sharing your bit of paradise. Pattie and Chris

The McKinney family has lived in The Bahamas for generations. At 17 Doon was teaching school in a remote village in Botswana. She fell in love with the idea of living in a Round House. When she returned to The Bahamas she decided to move from Nassau to the remote and untouched island of Eleuthera and build her own round house. Everyone was a bit skeptical of this young woman clearing the land by herself and building a house with no electricity, running water, car or a telephone.

Camping out every night on the site helped her develop an intense connection with the land and gave her the opportunity to build a house that was perfect for the location. She decided to build 11-foot arches on all five sides of the house to allow the ocean breeze to sweep into the house. She nestled the house among coconut trees and Casuarina trees where you can hear the sound of the wind in the trees and the waves on the beach. She surrounded the house with a garden full of beautiful hibiscus, oleander, seagrape, coconuts and, other native flowers and trees.

It was a challenge for a woman with limited carpentry skills to clear the land and almost single-handedly build a house- having never built so much as a box. Doon persevered and used creativity to overcome many of the obstacles she encountered. While still working on the building of the house Doon married and had 2 daughters (Casuarina and Taja)- the youngest was born right in the Round House before the midwife even found her way out to the house.
