Super location. The cabin was absolutely fabulous for all of us. Everything we needed was there. So clean and ready when we arrived. Parking is tricky, but we worked it out. The host, Dave, and Suzanne are great. When in contact, they answered back quickly. We will be back and will pass the word. This is a gem. A plus, the guys were jazzed as they got to watch the World Series. Thank you

Awesome Place

Wonderful views, large and roomy home with plenty of space for a large family or group. Across the street from the Sugar Pine Railroad allowing for super close access to those train concerts. The place was clean, well stocked with pots and pans and even has an extra refer in the garage. Would love to come back again next year. Highly recommend!

Wonderful Experience

I stayed at Trestlewood Chalet for a trip to Yosemite this summer. It was perfect for my large group, and everyone loved that it was spacious enough for us to spread out and have the privacy of our own bedrooms/bathrooms. Here are some of the highlights: -close to Yosemite (it was only a 5-10 minute drive to the park entrance) -very communicative and helpful host, David -beautiful living area with space to spread out, watch TV, and play games - there was even a train set for the kiddos! -outdoor deck with beautiful views -kitchen stocked with supplies to cook meals together -large dining table perfect for group dinners

Thanks for the great review - we really appreciate it! A few other guests have also commented about the trash (and I think bugs too). Guests should realize that this is a forested, remote mountain area -- bugs live here! We do use pest control services to keep them to a minimum but hey, we are visiting their homeland, not the other way around. Similarly, yes our trash dumpster is in Fish Camp -- 2 miles up the road. But that's a lot better than having to pack it out (which is how it used to be before we got the dumpster). Trash service in these remote mountain communities is not like it is in the city -- the permanent residents don't have the luxury of _any_ trash service; they have to take their trash all the way to the dump. Such is life in the mountains!

Perfect Family Fall Fun!

This house was perfect for our family group. Everyone had their own bedroom and bathroom. The large upstairs windows give a gorgeous view from inside or on the huge porch. Plenty of space for everyone to gather, eat together, do puzzles, games etc. The dumbwaiter was a surprise and a definite help getting everything upstairs. Rooms well furnished, plenty of blankets, towels, etc. Kitchen has everything you could want. The location is perfect as well; a short drive to Yosemite. We all loved the house and would return for sure.

Great home, beautiful views

Our family of 6 enjoyed our stay at the Trestlewood Chalet. The home is in a great location to explore Yosemite and I got accolades from the family for "selecting well." The home was spacious and had everything we needed. The views from the deck were amazing, as well as from the numerous windows in the home. The drive up to the home is steep and I particularly appreciated the warning that it might be difficult to maneuver in snowy conditions (which we did not experience). The home is fairly secluded and you are barely aware of anyone else being around. There were numerous dining options available in the area as well. Would definitely stay here again if we make it back to the valley!

A wonderful place, lots of room and close to Yosemite

We enjoyed having our annual family vacation here in this wonderful house. A great place for our family talent show and children’s treasure hunt. Lots of room and space for grandchildren and their parents. They all slept downstairs and we were able to sleep upstairs in master with oldest grandchild next door to master. Great separation for sleeping, etc. The kitchen is well stocked although the addition of a toaster would be wonderful. Great two car garage for parking with secure doors. As a side note the steam whistle from the Yosemite Mountain Railroad Shay engine across the highway was a very pleasant experience for the kids as well as the adults. It was a great soothing sound that made you feel you’re really in the mountains. The dumpster for the garbage wasn’t too difficult to get to. The directions were great on how to get there. We did have to leave bags full of our recycling items from our stay in trash bags in the laundry room. The recycling bin provided was not big enough to hold it all. Thanks for a great place to stay with our large family and we had a wonderful time. Yosemite NP of course was just amazing!

Yosemite Visit

As a large cabin in the woods, it comes with some of the challenges; evidence of mice on both levels of the home. The original stove top needs to be replaced; difficult to operate requiring the use of a hand lighter on a couple of the gas burners. Hot water was inconsistent in bathroom showers. Visitors need to bring their own speaker/s for music. Parents need to be careful with small children around the stairs. The dumbwaiter doors need to have locking mechanisms because it is much too easy for small children to open the doors. The Kitchen is well stocked with plenty of kitchenware and dry goods. Plenty of sheets and towels. Great outdoor cooking options with charcoal grills; visitors will need to bring a bag of charcoal. The wraparound deck with plenty of tables/chairs is a nice feature, allowing visitors to eat outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Pine Mountain train station with its museum and other amenities within walking distance is great for the kids and adults.

Thank you for the feedback; we do appreciate it! The Trestlewood Chalet is in a mountain environment adjacent to National Forest land. Wildlife is abundant and yes, sometimes they find their way inside. We do use professional exterminators to address the problem when it occurs. The Chambers cooktop is a classic 1970s-era high end appliance. While it is certainly not modern, we strongly believe it is essential part of the Trestlewood Chalet's unique character and have no plans to replace it. The hot water issue was traced to a faulty shower valve which has now been replaced. We are surprised by the speakers comment because the home actually has a multl-room, built-in speaker system (granted it is also 1970s-era, but still quite usable). The dumbwaiter is fully compliant with 1970's-era safety requirements, but we agree that children (of all ages) must understand that it is not a playtoy.

Good location to Yosemite

Overall we enjoyed the home and the close proximity to Yosemite. My only complaint was the cleanliness of the home. The kitchen counters were greasy, there were cobwebs in some of the bedrooms, and the downstairs area had quite a few bugs. I called the owner and left a voicemail but after a week still no return call. I also didn't like the trash situation. Yes, it is only a couple miles up the road but to have to take our trash, put it in our car, drive it to the dumpster and come back was just inconvenient.

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for letting us know about the cleanliness issues you experienced; they certainly are not up to our normal standards. We have informed the caretakers of your experience. We are however quite surprised that you say you called and left a message because we did not receive any such voicemail. We normally reply as soon as possible so guests should try other methods (email, VRBO messaging, etc) just to make sure the message gets through. Only then can we respond to any requests you may have. Regarding trash disposal guests should realize that trash collection in remote mountain communities (where incidentally wild animals are the permanent residents) is not at all like it is in more populated areas. Madera County simply does not provide any type of trash pickup service whatsoever to our location. We are lucky to be able to provide guests the convenience of disposing their trash only 5 minutes away in Fish Camp. Still we are glad to know that despite these issues you still enjoyed your visit to the Yosemite area and to our home!

Great Location, Communication, and Views

What we loved: Easy drive to Mariposa Grove and other Yosemite desitinations. Lots of bathrooms (with extra toiletries!) Big, well-stocked kitchen with a range of appliances Attached 2-car garage Plenty of extra sheets and blankets The spectacular views and huge windows David's prompt replies and helpfulness What we were surprised by: We had to drive to a private dumpster 3 miles away to dispose of our trash several times during our stay. One bedroom was too hot and another too cold. The garbage disposal doesn't work. The internet is pretty slow. Overall, the pros far outweighed the cons! The house is truly beautiful and helped make our vacation wonderful and memorable.

Thank you Julie for your thoughtful review! We're glad to know you enjoyed your visit and hope you can return some day. Regarding your "surprises" - guests should understand that trash service in a remote mountain area with abundant wildlife is likely not as convenient as what you have at your own home. The house was built in the 70's so the heating and A/C may not be as efficient as modern systems. But each room does have individual control of the vents, windows to let in the fresh mountain air, and we also provide electric space heaters for guests. The garbage disposal does work as designed .Guests should let us know of any problems they find as soon as possible; often the fix is simple and quick. The house is served by a private septic system so minimizing your use of the disposal is a good idea in any case. And while it may be true that the internet speed is lower than what many guests are used to, it is in fact as fast as our provider can deliver to this remote mountain location. It is currently sufficient to support a Zoom or Webex meeting, but may fall short with multiple simultaneous video or gaming streams. We are glad to know that these few "surprises" did not prevent your vacation from being both wonderful and memorable!

Everything you need is there

Actually a wonderful place to stay and I would definitely stay again. The reason for four stars vice five is because 1) sliding doors to the deck need some serious work. One of the three was totally inoperable and the other two were hard to open and close as well as the screens. 2) some "critter" was inside the walls of the house on the lower floor and every once in a while one could hear it scratching or moving around in the wee hours. Like I said, i would definitely stay again. Chalet had everything one might need and more. I have stayed in many VRBOs and this one was the best stocked of all. Also very close to south entrance to Yosemite and within one hour from the valley floor. Great restaurant at Narrow Gage Inn just across the road if not interested in cooking some night. David also is very easy to contact if you have any concerns.

Thanks for the feedback -- we really do appreciate it! The sliding glass doors do become sticky seasonally; settling of this 50 year-old home has made the frames no longer square. Professional opinion is that only replacement will solve the problem and we plan to do just that -- but it's a big enough job that we can't get it scheduled until at least the fall of 2022. Regarding "critters" we do employ professional pest control and they generally do a very good job at that. But still our guests should understand that this is a unique, 50 year old mountain home bordered by national forest lands. You should expect to see wildlife and that might even include hearing them at night. If this will prevent you from feeling comfortable during your visit, then perhaps a room at the Tenaya Lodge or a hotel in Oakhurst will be a better choice for you. We're glad to know that overall Alex and his group still enjoyed their visit and would return again. He and his group are welcome back any time!

Good location, but a tired, not well cleaned house

The good: location, lots of rooms, nice view from the deck. The bad: the house is tired. When taking a shower any water usage in other parts of the house affect the temp in the shower, which is not enjoyable. Beds were a bit firm for our liking. Knives need sharpening badly, non-stick pans flaking the non-stick. BBQs are charcoal (no propane) and there were 3 bags on site, all empty, giving us the illusion that when it was time to grill, we'd have charcoal. (in other STR we have stayed, propane or charcoal has always been provided). Screen door in master out to private deck was broken, so couldn't open slider and enjoy Yosemite fresh mountain air. Furniture in LR is all covered with protectors. Re: cleanliness. There was a big spill of what was maybe vanilla ice cream out on the deck when we arrived. Too many dead bugs scattered around the house to count - and many had been there definitely since before the last cleaning. Gross stuff spilled and dried in the kitchen utensil drawer. The large grill was so dirty it was unusable, but the smaller one was good enough. The oven was atrociously dirty and gross. (I have pics of every one of these items.) We stayed in the primary br upstairs, which is right over the garage. Something in the garage turns on what seemed like every 3 minutes, which made it annoying when trying to fall asleep. Maybe water well pump or? A small note for those who might bring small children. The stairway rails, although to code when the house was built, have not been brought up to current code and the spacing between the rails is wide, probably about 6" or more. My 4 yo could easily get his head through. Just a warning... The house is roomy and the view is good, but unless the owner is willing to put some money into the house to provide more standard comfort, and have better cleaning, we would not stay again or recommend to friends.

We thank Spencer for his review. We only wish he would have mentioned his concerns to us during his visit, instead of a week after his departure. Spencer is correct that this historic 1970s mountain home has 50 year old piping and railings built to 1970s code. It is also true that the home's booster pump is located in the garage, below the master bedroom. These are essential characteristics of this historic home; they cannot be changed easily without seriously compromising its unique character. Future guests should carefully consider these things before choosing to rent our home. As we have noted in prior reviews the sliding glass doors are sticky due to structural shifting. Replacement is simply not possible during the busy summer season. However all but one (in the dining area) are still quite usable. However Spencer is wrong to think our home is not well maintained. Our beds are firm precisely because the mattresses are replaced often. The entire lower floor carpeting was replaced just this Spring. The Chicago Cutlery knives do dull with use; that's why we provide multiple styles of sharpener for guests to use. We are not aware of any flaking nonstick pans (yes they do get scratched), but the well-stocked kitchen has plenty of other options -- including a full set of quality stainless pots and pans. We very much appreciate guests telling us when the caretakers have missed something. They are usually quite good but of course no one is perfect. Yet it is impossible for us to correct such mistakes if guests don't bother to tell us DURING their visit. And we share Spencer's frustration with prior guests who did not bother to dispose of their empty bags of charcoal. Fortunately there is more available at the Fish Camp General Store only 5 minutes away.

Host was so needy

Host was super responsive before arrival which felt reassuring, however once we arrived he continued to message to ensure we arrived and every other reason you can think of. If i failed to reply within a couple hours he would message again and say "Hello? are you there?" I advised I would not be able to reply at his desired timeframe (asap) due to us being on vacation. We had a lot of back and forth, he sent an indirect message insinuating the sheriff would go knock at our door. Which I made sure to let him know I was totally ok with since I wasn't breaking the law. He had an issue with our cars and questioned why we had four cars even though I had previously explained to him that we had party's from three different states meeting there. He had an issue with "too much traffic in the driveway" on his cameras late at night. He seemed to be glued to his cameras and questioning everything. I felt harassed from his llloooonnnggg messages and his million questions asking if we were trespassing. We had a dog and walked the dog up and down around the area, not inside anyone's property. The trip itself was ok, but the host 100% ruined the trip for me and stressed me out to the max. I struggle with health issues and anxiety and his multiple long messages were not helpful and did not allow me to relax in any way. It was honestly a waste of vacation time. I felt my neck in knots and was so close to just leaving early. Pros: Home is beautiful and fully stocked as far as dishes and linen. Cons: Host, coffee creamers were expired, home is not actually 6 rooms but 5 rooms and 1 closet with two beds. That closet was not used but if we had more people in our party and needed it, it would have been an issue because there was rat poop under one of those mattresses. Floors were not clean (our feet were dirty on day of arrival from walking barefoot) We made sure to mop, vacuum and clean the house before leaving to not give the host any further reasons to reach out.

We are glad to know that Mabel appreciated our responsiveness. If Mabel was uncomfortable after arrival then perhaps it was of her own doing. Were there actually only 4 cars for her declared group of 6 adults, 1 minor child and 1 dog that would have been fine. Surprisingly there were 7. We share our steep, narrow driveway with several other residences. Parking is limited. Our maximum occupancy of 14 persons of any age, at any time is clearly visible on our listing. Over-occupancy is a serious violation of county law. And we do get notified quickly when there are neighborhood concerns. We believe it is in everyone's best interest for our guests to know how to remain good neighbors. Future guests should understand that the house does have only 5 true bedrooms -- just as we state on our listing. It is only VRBO that insists on calling our "bonus room" a 6th bedroom (which they will not change). Yet still we are surprised that Mabel didn't understand this given that well before her arrival she asked specific, pointed questions about that bonus room, its extra beds, and its proximity to other rooms -- for a group declared to be only 6 adults, 1 minor child and a dog staying in a 5 bedroom house. We are especially disappointed to learn only now (one month after her departure) that Mabel felt the house was not clean. If they discover any problems, guests should contact us as soon as possible so that we may rectify those problems promptly. And while we do feel badly that Mabel was not happy with her visit, we remain confident that future guests who are honest and respectful of our house rules will (like the vast majority of our guests) fondly remember their visit as a 5 star experience.
