We had an extraordinary stay in this historic, remodeled chapel, originally completed for the Antonin Order in 1290. The history of the building is summarized on a carved sign next to the entrance.Marianne, the owner of the building, recommended walking the .4 mile from the train station. The building is on a pedestrian-only lane. She was unsure that a taxi or Uber would be an option. The walk was easy and provided a nice introduction to Avignon.Marianne gave us a tour of the building and shared its history and architectural features.If you have any physical limitations, be aware that there are 55 relatively shallow steps up from the entrance. An additional 16 steps on a narrow, curved stairway leads up to the kitchen and dining area, but a sturdy rope “banister” ensures safe climbing. The kitchen has a gas stove, an oven, a microwave, a refrigerator, and enough gear to cook wonderful meals. A Carrefour market is located around the corner.There are two bedrooms. One is spectacular and features a dome with the Antonins’ tau symbol. The design amplifies voices! The second bedroom is smaller with two twin beds.The bathroom features both a bathtub and a shower, two sinks, and a toilet. The washer and dryer are also conveniently located there along with a drying rack.The Place St. Didier square is around the corner and something seemed to always be going on. Central Avignon is very walkable and has a several interesting museums, many of which offer free admission.

My wife and I spent 5 nights at this stunning property. There is something special about going to sleep at night in a former church building that was constructed out of stone more than 800 years ago with exterior walls 6 feet thick; gothic arch windows; a stone spiral staircase connecting the living area with the kitchen and dining area; and a dome concrete ceiling. The property is centrally located to everything within the fortress walls of old Avignon. The hostess Marianne was terrific, assisting with travel logistics, directions, baggage, and restaurant recommendations. We give this property and its proprietress 5 stars.!

This was the neatest place we have ever stayed—historical, beautiful, clean, and very special. The host was incredible and took time to connect with us and make us feel welcome. The rooftop area was beautiful, the living space was unique and just plain incredible. We look forward to returning some day!

Beeindruckend

Die Wohnung als auch die Umgebung waren einfach toll. Wir hatten mit einer schönen Altstadt gerechnet und genau diese plus einem Kulturfestival bekommen. Die Wohnung ist mal etwas anderes, wo kann man schon im Wohnzimmer Federball spielen und gleichzeitig Kultur und Geschichte um sich haben. Die Einweisung war super und wurde auf unseren Wunsch noch um eine Geschichtszusammenfassung des Gebäudes erweitert. Die Stadt war toll und auch die Region bot viele Ausflugsziele.

Fabulous historic loft!

Absolutely loved our stay here! Such a unique location. We are a family of 4 from Canada. Amenities were great, lovely stocked kitchen, and how great is it to play pool and badminton in a 13th century building! Locating parking is a bit of a challenge. We had a car because we were travelling to the south after our stay in Avignon but you certainly don’t need one. The sites and great restaurants are all within walking distance. Marianne is an excellent host and gave us lots of helpful information. Would definitely return!

Fabulous place

We stayed here for a month. It is a unique and stunning place…every bit as impressive in person than in the pictures, if not more so. Lots of space, comfortable seating and bed, awesome kitchen which is well equipped. You get both a tub and shower as well as two sinks so perfect for a couple. And we were grateful to have a washer and dryer — the latter rarely available in Europe rentals. Everything you need is provided. There was a minor mixup at check-in but the owner took care of it quickly. The woman who cleans gave us the orientation tour. It is fortunate that my husband knew French or we wouldn’t have been able to understand a word. There was a second person we met later whose English is excellent so worth asking for her. It is five flights of stairs which we did not mind. The location is perfect….right in the middle of the old city, ten minutes from the train & bus station. We did several day trips to nearby cities: Arles, Uzes, Ille de las Sorgue, Apt, Nimes, etc. Best VRBO we’ve had out of many!

Fantastic location, incredibly unique property

We felt like locals staying in the heart of the old city, in this historic yet super-modern apartment. The location absolutely cannot be beat. Only a five-minute walk from the Avignon market & steps from numerous restaurants. Our hosts were super-attentive, easy to reach with questions, and really accommodating. The apartment is HUGE, with high ceilings and a big kitchen/dining space. The bathroom is equipped with modern everything, and there's also a big washer & dryer. Be aware that you will be walking up a bunch of stairs, and the distance from the bedroom to the bathroom is long in the middle of the night. (You may want to bring a rechargable nightlight or two). A great alternative to any hotel nearby. We would definitely stay here again.

Fantastic Place

We loved the Apt. It was in the perfect location to enjoy Avignon. Check-in was a little confusing but all in all okay. We played pool, backgammon, enjoyed the patio on the roof top, kitchen was great, bathroom area was great. Needs a couple new pool cues, Lots of stairs to climb, main area is a little warmer, but bedroom has its own split unit and was perfect.

Unique apartment

We enjoyed our stay during the festival in this most unique historical building. It is truly unique and one of a kind experience. It is also exceedingly large! We will always remember our stay in because of this place. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bathroom was great. We all enjoyed it.

Perfect Pied a Terre in Avignon

We had a perfect week in this amazing chapel where Pope Benedict XIII hid in the last days of the Avignon popes. This fabulous apartment has been redone beautifully, while keeping the character of the 13th century structure. The kitchen is very well equipped, the bed is incredibly comfortable, the air conditioning worked great and if you play there is a grand piano in the center of the living room. TV worked great. The bathroom has all the comforts of a five star hotel with lots of towels and a great shower as well as a spa tub. The caretaker Jean Marc was wonderful and even carried our bags up the five flights of stairs to the loft apt! Jean Marc is a chef and we loved cooking with him in the apt. on one of our last nights. The five story walk up did not bother us at all but it's something to be aware of. There are stunning views from a rooftop deck and we loved taking wine and cheese up there. We only have wonderful the NGS to say about this "Loft in a 13th century Church in Avignon"

Best VRBO ever!

This beautiful property in the heart of Avignon was the best part of our trip to Provence area. It was the perfect home base for 4 nights for multiple day trips in the area. Marianne was an amazing, attentive host. By the end of our stay we felt truly immersed in the culture. We happened to be there over Easter holiday, so many shops were closed for a few days, which was unfortunate. The apartment itself as way beyond our expectations. Shopping at Les Halles market and cooking in the fully stocked kitchen may have been my favorite part. The hidden gem on the roof was breathtaking. Perfect spot for a family with 2 children. The second bedroom was a little small, so might be tough for 2 couples. There was one bathroom to share but it was huge and that was never an issue. I cannot express how unique and wonderful this property was. You will not regret coming here. I hope to visit again one day!! Thanks Marianne for the amazing hospitality and memories we will cherish.

Mindblowingly memorable

This was the best VRBO we have stayed in worldwide, by a significant margin! It was perfectly located, clean and cleverly decorated. There were so many fascinating idiosyncracies throughout - it was a favorite for both us as a couple and our teenage children. Such a beautiful and meaningful stay proactively engaging host, and comfortable creative surroundings.

Excellent second time

Entering the property left us literally speechless. The beauty, size, history and attention to detail were beyond words. Our host, Marianne, was wonderful and ensured all our needs were met. It made our stay in Avignon truly memorable.

An amazing place

This place is so nice you won't believe your eyes! It is so nice we wanted to just stay in and enjoy the space. Once I saw the fully equipped kitchen and the beautiful dinning space I knew where I wanted to have dinner in every night. I cooked myself but it would be interesting to bring in a chef as well. I took the recommendation of another reviewer and parked at les Halles. (It's 20 euros a day, or 30 for a lost ticket 😉) This is the place to be if you want to enjoy time together.

The Loft in a 13th Century Church was magical!

Our stay in The Loft was one of the highlights of our three weeks in France. It is absolutely beautiful, and is well worth the stairs to get there. It has a fully-appointed kitchen, and Mom was delighted to discover that the lovely piano is in tune! The Loft is an easy walk to anything you could need in Avignon. We can’t say enough good about our experience there! Marianne is a superhost for good reason. She was incredibly helpful. She offered to pick up our 90-year-old Mom from the cruise ship, put chairs on the stair landings for Mom, carried our luggage up and down the stairs, give us the history of the building, gave us restaurant suggestions, and even gave us advice when we got sick. We feel like we made a friend!

Unglaublich!

Die Bilder zeigen nur die halbe Wahrheit. In Wirklichkeit ist die Wohnung unglaublich. Wir sind in der Hitze oft in die Wohnung geflüchtet, um dort die Zeit zu genießen. Die Höhenverhältnisse, die Küche und das Ambiente laden zum verweilen ein. Marianna, unsere Gastgeberin, stand uns immer zu Seite, um uns den Aufenthalt zu verschönern. Es war eine wirklich wunderschöne Zeit und wir kommen wieder 🙏

One-off stay in Avignon

A beautiful and unique place to stay in the heart of Avignon. Great base to explore the city and the festival and also to hang out in--not least for the stunning roof terrace. The host is super attentive and kind. Strongly recommend if you're in Avignon with up to 4 people and can splurge.
