Tucked away in the Allegheny Mountains of northeastern West Virginia, Canaan Valley is one of Appalachia’s best-kept secrets—a high mountain paradise where untamed wilderness, charming small towns, and four-season adventures converge.

At nearly 3,200 feet in elevation, Canaan Valley is the highest sizable valley east of the Rockies, offering cool summers, snowy winters, and breathtaking scenery year-round. Here, nature reigns supreme. The valley is home to Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the largest high-elevation wetland in the mid-Atlantic, as well as Blackwater Falls State Park, famous for its thundering amber-colored waterfalls and dramatic canyon views.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Canaan Valley is a playground. Hike or bike across more than 30 miles of scenic trails, paddle through still mountain waters, or birdwatch in one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the East. In winter, the valley transforms into a snowy wonderland, boasting two ski resorts—Timberline Mountain and Canaan Valley Resort, both beloved for their family-friendly slopes and laid-back atmosphere.

But Canaan Valley isn’t just about rugged adventures. Minutes from the valley floor, the artsy mountain towns of Davis and Thomas invite you to slow down. The Appalachian Retreat is one of the larger homes in the Canaan Valley and can accommodate 17. It is perfect for large gatherings like family reunions, sports trips, nature groups and a large gathering of friends. The great room is spacious and bright and the bunk room is a fun way to accommodate more people. It is right off route 32, so even in the worst of weather, it will be accessible. It is also walking distance from Mama Mia Italian restaurant and the Ski barn. Relax in the hot tun and next to the fire and stargaze the beautiful night sky that West Virginia is known for.
