Vancouver, like other large metropolitan areas, suffers from homelessness, and there is a marginalized and vulnerable population that suffers from health and addiction issues. We live in the heart of Chinatown and although it is very vibrant, fantastic, and safe you will see homeless people and people in active addiction in the neighborhood. For the most part, these folks are harmless, but it can be sad and heartbreaking to see. There are multiple reasons for this - far too many to delve into here; all three levels of government are working on making it better. We have lived in the neighborhood for over 12 years and have never experienced any violence or problems. Having said that, please do not let anyone into the building behind you. Anyone who lives at the Ginger or is staying there will have a key and fob to get into the building.
