Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

Aloha! Come to Kapoho Bay, a snorkeler’s delight, where the sun shines and the trade winds blow, located in the SE corner of the Big Island, a short 35-minute drive from the Hilo airport.

Slip into Island Time as lush tropical colors, walls of windows, and Asian-inspired decor surround you with a sense of serenity. The sounds of the ocean can be heard throughout. Your home away from home sleeps up to 6 people; there are two private bedrooms, one located on each of two levels, and the rec room has a futon couch, which can double as a third bed. Each floor has a bathroom. This is an ideal set-up for 2-3 couples or a family with children, or just a romantic get-away for the two of you. Enjoy your privacy on the large back lanai, overlooking lush tropical vegetation, while you soak in the sun or barbeque. There is a full-size living room with satelite TV, a dining room, and a spacious chef’s kitchen, with its adjoining screened in dining deck. There is also an office area. The lower level is wheelchair-friendly with wider doors, large roll-in shower, grab bars, etc. If you want to relax in the shade, choose the lower covered lanai that opens onto the backyard. Trade winds waft through the house keeping it cool. Whether you are indoors or out, relax, stretch out, listen to the waves, and enjoy the garden vegetation and mountain views.

You can have absolute privacy during your stay. However, if you have a need or desire, the manager is nearby, ready to attend to any needs you may have. Also, if you would like any additional services, she can arrange these for you. These other amenities might include a massage therapist, a chef, tour guide, housekeeping and laundry services (the latter especially nice for longer stays). A guide book of suggested local activities and events, with maps, is at the house. There is also a copy of an island guide book available for your use during your stay.

One of the best snorkeling sites on the island is Waiopai Marine Conservation Area, a 2-block walk away. In protected waters, you can swim and snorkel amongst coral and a myriad of colorful ocean creatures, including sea turtles. If you are not into swimming, at low tide, you can walk the rims of the pools and look down into the colorful sea fans and schools of fish. The area is wonderful for walking along the roads or the lava ocean front.

Five minutes down the road is Ahalanui Warm Springs Park, where volcanically heated water mixes with seawater to provide a natural hot pond for swimming and soaking. Five more minutes brings you to Pohoiki Point for surfing and boogie boarding. Fifteen minutes from the house is Kehena Black Sand Beach.

LIVE LAVA VIEWING - The lava flow is now near the east end, meaning that it is only about a 15-20 minute drive to go see lava as it pours glowing red into the sea, sending plumes of steam skyward while creating earth's newest land. The entrance to Volcanoes National Park is forty-five minutes from the house.

Pahoa Town is 10 minutes away with quaint shops and delicious dining. Local outdoor markets near Pahoa and in Hilo are wonderful to attend and to pick up groceries and local art. Hilo is a short drive north with shopping, theaters, waterfalls, botanical gardens, outdoor markets, and more. Kona is 2 hours away.

The home is fully furnished with linens and kitchen needs. There is a Sat TV/DVD/VCR/CD player - Bring your i-pod or favorite CD's to hook into the entertainment system. There is an outdoor barbecue. Also provide on site are: Beach towels & mats; Boogie boards, and snorkel gear. All you need to bring is your swimsuit, a few comfy clothes, and get ready to relax and enjoy.

There are NO hidden fees. There is NO additional cleaning fee - cleaning is included in your rent. 3-night minimum stay. Requests for 1-night or 2-night stays are accepted but will be billed at a 3-night rate. If you have pets you would like to bring with you, check with the managers for approval and additional security deposit fees. Monthly, several month rental?: contact manager for details. Kamaaina?: contact the manager for specials.

Snorkeling, Sun, and Rejuvenation - Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Kapoho

I bought land here after a visit to a friend, though I'd had not come looking for property. The area has such a wonderful feel: relaxed, warm, friendly, peaceful, wonderful tropical vegetation, close to the fantastic ocean tidepools, and great fresh food markets. I designed the house to capture the trade winds, to withstand the elements, and to provide a wonderful transition from the indoors to outdoors. Once the house was finished in 2007, I chose to share it with others as a vacation rental.

The Unique Benefits at this House

When I spend time at my property, I gather fresh food at the local market, and then settle in to just relax at house, listening to the ocean. Of course, there is usually work for me to do, but I also go out the front door and walk the coast, go snorkeling, and soak in the nearby warm pond. I head off to explore the lava areas - nearby, Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and up Mauna Kea - I visit botanical gardens, hike and do photography. It's a wonderful base for going off on challenging explorations, or just hanging near home and relaxing. If I don't want to eat on my own deck, I partake of the local food at the markets and in the quaint retaurants in Pahoa (10 min away). This is peaceful "Old" Hawaii - not the place for those who want shopping and night life - it IS the place for rest, relaxation, rejuvenation, and exploration. It's a great place whether one is solo, wanting time with a special someone, or bringing the whole family - or extended family - to enjoy time together in wonderful Hawaii. Come visit. You just might fall in love with the area also!

A
Waiopai Marine Conservation Area Tidepools

A myriad of wonderful tidepools in a sheltered area; colorful fish, sea turtles, corals, and fans; great for snorkeling or one can walk around them at low tide; 2-3 block walk from the house - snorkel

B
Ahalanui Warm Springs Park

A gigantic 'hot' tub - fed by volcanically heated rainwater which mixes with saltwater - right at the ocean's edge. A great place to relax, soak tired muscles, or even snorkel

C
Champange Pond

A short walk across open land brings one to the nearby Champange Pond - warm, bubbling, and great for snorkeling

D
Cape Kumukahi

The cleanest air on earth! This point is where air has traveled the longest distance across open ocean. A nice lava beach walk from the house(when tide is lower)and great place to watch big wave act

E
Road to Pohoiki

10 min drive from the house to Pohoiki Point - surfing, boogie boarding, another warm pond. Continue on down the coast to other coastal parks, cliffs and big waves, and a black sand beach.

F
Road to Pahoa

10 min to Pahoa Town - with its quaint boardwalk, yummy ethnic restaurants, boutiques, grocery store, and other necessities. Another 5 min to the weekend market with great fresh produce, food vendors

Owner's Map of Kapoho

I've always been a mountain girl and spend a lot of time hiking around my home in Alaska. However, I also love the tropics and the ocean, and I am very fascinated by Pele and her volcanic activity. My second home in Hawaii provides a great (warm!) retreat to relax at and from which to explore this incredible island.

    • Thanks Cat & Debbie! I don't usually like to write, but when I'm looking for a rental I rely a lot on the comments from others, so here goes . . . My husband and I live in Hilo, just about 40 minutes away, but we like to get away sometimes to relax, and your house does just that. The snorkeling at the tidal pools and at Champagne Pond was so nice. We felt refreshed and hated to have to return home to the regular daily life. Your house was very comfortable. The only thing I could think it could use is ceiling fans. Thanks again for letting us stay there. We would like to stay over there again in the future.

      Homeowner Response:
Regarding fans: house and windows are designed to catch the trade winds, it has 10" thick insulating walls, and rarely needs fans. Floor fans are availabe for the occasional days the winds don't waft through!

    • My parents and I loved this house, it's large and clean, only 5 minutes walk away from the ocean and the tide pool. We had a great vacation on the Big Island, with help from the owner's agent Cathy and her assistant Angel. Thank you all and see you next time!

    • After staying a few days in a hotel in Hilo, we packed up our stuff and drove to Kapoho. What a pleasant surprise. We went from a cramped hotel room to our new spacious digs. No more tripping over luggage and souvenirs. We now had two floors of living space WOO-HOO! Each floor has similar floor plans – bedroom, walk-in closet, large bathroom and a living area. Upstairs had a full kitchen with a screened-in lanai. And every inch of the house was immaculate. From this location, we walked to swim at Champagne Pond or sauntered over to the tide pools for a little snorkeling. The drive along the Red Road is unforgettable. We lunched at Kalapana Café where the Red Road ends because an earlier lava flow crossed the road. We could to Pahoa (a few minutes away) to pick up essentials at Malama Market, eat at Luquin’s, Ning’s, Black Rock, Kaleo’s, and Paolo’s – and we could say “yes” when asked if we wanted a doggy bag since we now had access to a refrigerator, stove, and microwave. Everything we needed was just minutes away. We had a wonderful visit and we are looking forward to staying here again during our next trip to the islands.

    • This house is absolutely spectacular. It is in a neighborhood called "Vacationland," and is a short walk from the Kapoho tidepools, which offers exceptional snorkeling, especially at higher tide. It is also convenient to the volcano (Nat'l Park and to see the live lava flow), and to Hilo. It is off the beaten track, and the food options are better in Hilo than in Pahoa (the nearest town). In any case, the place itself is wonderful. Very modern, very clean, extremely comfortable, and BIG. Lots of options for eating, sleeping, and just relaxing. The rest of the neighborhood is an interesting mix of vacation homes (like this one) and native Hawaiians who likely live there year-round. This was by far the nicest house in the neighborhood, at least that we saw. We would HIGHLY recommend this rental to anyone who wants to visit this wonderful part of Hawaii!!!

    • What a find in both a modern living space and initiation to the Puna/Kapoho area -- old Hawaii as they say. This exquisite home is in the heart of the neighborhood of world-renown tide pools (snorkeling for the advanced & newcomer) and thermal ponds (swimming in warm, calm ocean waters). The home was a soul-soothing retreat after a day swimming with the exotics or hiking Volcano National Park (45 mins away). The two story layout features private nooks throughout and a fully stocked kitchen for the quick or complete meal. My daughter was thrilled with her walk-in closet and the lower level is ideal for the elderly or partially disabled. An Eden with all the modern conveniences...

    • My fiancee and I wanted to get away for the long weekend and made the trip from Kona to the East Side for Memorial Day weekend. When we arrived at the house, we were so pleased. The house is SPOTLESS, and I mean clean. We ran from room to room, like little kids. Every room is so tastefully decorated and the neighborhood so peaceful. We had breakfast on the screened in lanai every morning, swam in the hot ponds and played in the tide pools by day, and bbq'd on our huge lanai in the evenings. This place is a rare find! We cannot wait to stay there again. The pictures don't do it justice. What a gem! Mahalo nui loa! Nicole and Matt

    • I spent a week in this lovely vacation home. It is definitely built for relaxation and comfort. I originally thought it was a little far from Hilo and the action on the Island, but that proved to be false. There was so much to do close to Kapoho Kaiyo that I didn't get bored, plus it is much easier to relax in this setting than in some hotel on a busy downtown street. I don't know what I enjoyed most: snorkeling, visit the crater, seeing the lava flow, relaxing in the hot pools, shopping in Hilo and Panoa, or the Italian restaurant in Panoa. I'll definitely return to Kapoho Kaiyo and would highly recommend the lodging.

    • We used the Kapoho house as a staging area to view the whole island. It was a very nice place to relax after buzzing around all day. Lucy and I traveled up to Hawi, spent the night there, and then drove to Kona to see the changes that have happened since I was here twenty years ago. We traveled most of the Island in the week we were here. Wonderful trip. Lucy spent two days with Bill at the Nautilus Dive Center getting lessons in Scuba diving. Great experience. Octopus, turtles, and many little fishes. We also saw a school of spinner dolphins corralling a group of fish for dinner. Oh... the house is everything that the others say it is... clean, new, well stocked... and the local manager, Cat, is a real gem!

    • We really enjoyed this house. It was new and in great condition and we loved the beautiful colors of the walls. There is a nice lanai with chairs and chaise lounge and a great screened porch off the kitchen. The kitchen was large and had great appliances - even a rice cooker. It could use some basics like a strainer, better knives, etc. but we love to cook and were making almost all of our meals there. The downstairs shower is great - room for two with a tiled bench so very good if someone is disabled or unable to stand for long periods of time. Furniture is nice and very comfortable. Would definitely stay here again. The subdivision was very nice to walk around although because of the tide schedule the tide pools weren't great when we were here but we went to the next subdivision and went to Champagne Pond which was incredible.

      Homeowner Response:
We'll gladly add the missing kitchen items.

    • Great house for our family of 4.Brand new and could use a few basics in the kitchen to make it more useful. I would go back and the layout would work for 2 couples or families

      Homeowner Response:
The kitchen is quite well stocked with dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, wok, linens, big and small appliances. We aren't sure what 'basics' are missing. When we find out, we'll take care of it.
