The house seen from the dock
Location: Westport Point, South of Boston, Massachusetts, USA (30 miles from Providence, RI and 60 miles from Boston)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths (Sleeps 8)
A simple, open, light-filled home by a tidal marsh and cove of the Westport River, close to the Historic Point, harbor, and beach. We are at the end of a lane and away from the roads, so the nights are quiet except for the sounds of the birds and the water in the cove.
The house stands on a large lawn that slopes to the water, with a shady grove of cedar trees with two hammocks. A large deck with wisteria arbor overlooks the cove. Part is shaded all morning, and the rest is shaded from mid-day on; an equally large screened porch is a lovely place for breakfast or for afternoon tea or drinks and snacks.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, each with views of the water; downstairs there is another bedroom. The upstairs bath is large and has a tub/shower, while downstairs there is a bath with shower. There is also an outside shower for after the beach.
The cove is a great place to launch kayaks, and good for swimming each day around high tide, when the water level is 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep. The cove is part of an extensive network of sheltered water, tidal marsh and osprey nests, great for sailing in shallow-draft boats and for clamming and muddy play.
Westport is an unspoiled, historic fishing and farming community defined by two rivers full of islands and marshes, and edged by a long white sand beach, with a range of wonderful restaurants, two nearby vineyards, farmstands, fish market, great beaches five minutes away, and birding and kayaking.
