Accommodations:  Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-8)

Welcome to "The Blue Pike Lakehouse" built in 2008. This 1,000 sq.ft. cottage is in a superb location for nature viewing, privacy and total relaxation on the Lake Erie Shoreline. Situated in the middle of an expansive area of private undeveloped land this location will delight the naturalist who enjoys outdoor recreation and exploration. The Blue Pike is 3 miles from Ashtabula Harbor and 8 miles from Conneaut Harbor. Enjoy locally, beaches, wineries covered bridges and more. Drive 15 miles and you are in the resort town of Geneva on the Lake.

An activity for every season and every taste can be enjoyed here. In the house is a full sized King and Queen bed suite upstairs with a full bath and a 10'x12' sunset balcony. Downstairs is an open living and dining area with a cozy stone hearth glass doored woodstove and full bath. There is a queen sleep sofa down and a bunk room sleeping porch off the back. The backyard is backdropped by an antique barn and a woodland meadow that flourishes with wildlife. Our restored barn has a small hen house in it and fresh eggs are available with the rental. The balcony is an ideal spot to shoot the evening breeze and stargaze while you wind down your busy day before retiring to the plush bedroom. Our beds, couch and linens were purchased with plush and traditional comfort in mind.

The Blue Pike property includes 5 acres of Lakefront directly across the street. The lot features are spectacular. It consists of a large locust grove, a hardwood hollow with a path to the shore, a 70' cliff inhabited by Bank Swallows and a large private lawn and picnic area in direct view of the sunset and Ashtabula Harbor. Ship watchers get a fantastic view as lake freighters are at their closest point to the shore, passing the Ashtabula Lighthouse enroute to the docks. This happens often during the summer & autumn sunsets as we have a very active shipping lane. Eagles soar overhead and can be seen frequently in range of your camera. The lot comes equipped with a gas grill, firewood, campfire pits, picnic tables, chairs, horseshoes and corn toss. The lot is also well suited for tents and can accommodate an RV or two if you want to host a larger group. There is no sanitary facility on the lot and the house rental is required to use the lot. Firewood is plentiful on the grounds and we do not permit imported firewood as we do our part to prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer.

The Lake Shore Park boat launch is only 2 miles west and Conneaut Harbor 8 miles east. The Blue Pike property has ample parking space for your boat trailer. Fishing off Ashtabula or Conneaut is as good as it gets here in the central basin of Lake Erie. We have Walleye and Perch charters out of Ashtabula and Conneaut. I have a few favorite captains and if you would like to reserve a charter with your stay, we can hook you up with a great captain.

Ashtabula Harbor and shopping is only 3 miles west. Our harbor has fine dining, a walking shopping district, nightlife and an awesome sandy beach. Walnut Beach is one of the not so well known treasures of Lake Erie and its a short drive from the Blue Pike at 3.5 miles.

Our shoreline at the Blue Pike can be seen in our photos. It's a unique Devonian period Chagrin Shale shore scattered with alluvium rock. Conditions here are ideal for fossil hunting and even coin digging or snorkeling. This shoreline has secret secluded beaches that can be reached by kayak or jet ski and you can secure small watercraft in our ravine at the waters edge. Wet suit boots or watershoes are recommended to enjoy Lake Erie's shores.

Arrangements can be made to add 66 acres of deep woods hunting and a 2 acre bass lake (in the event your Lake Erie plans are spoiled by weather). This is a superb location for big bucks, turkey, squirrel, coyotes and more. Please inquire about your hunting interests in advance to confirm availability of property access. Waterfowl hunting is accessible from this shoreline and our location is excellent for setting up blinds and decoys. Although we don't allow pets in the house, we can accommodate a kennel arrangement in the garage if you need to bring your favorite hunting buddy.

Golfers also have a variety of courses to choose from in Ashtabula. We have the Village Green course only 1.5 miles to the east. Our former Ashtabula Country Club, now the public Harbor Golf Club is 5 miles to the west. Golfing rates in Ashtabula are very reasonable.

Wine tasting and tours are regular events in Ashtabula County and our property is located in close proximity to those wineries in the Kingsville and Conneaut area. Ashtabula is also a wonderful Ohio County for Covered Bridge touring. If you are in the Blue Pike Lakehouse in the fall, come prepared with your photography equipment and plan on taking some award winning photos.

For couples, this cottage is a very cozy quiet and private place to simply relax and spend quality time together.

For touring cyclists with or without a motor, we are on the "Circle Lake Erie" and the "Seaway Trail" routes.

In any season, the "Blue Pike Lakehouse" will provide you with the opportunity to retreat and relax on your terms.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2005

My wife Julene and I have roots in Ashtabula. We both have had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the USA. Travelling is part of my job as an industrial sales manager and I've acquired a good sense for high value hospitality. Julene is a retired art teacher. Together we have a son who is in college and I'm proud to brag that he is an Eagle Scout. Julenes son is married and has given her 3 grandchildren. They are in our area so obviously our children and grandchildren are one of our favorite interests. This project was intiated by me in 2004 when a piece of land I knew very well went up for sale, since that time Julene and I, who have always had a passion for creative endeavers, have had to make this project our sole creative outlet. I was an avid woodturner for years and am only now beginning to find a little time to get back to my craft. Julene is a painter and she longs to get to a point where she can take up the brush and capture our landscapes. We have a great deal of ideas for "Blue Pike" and intend to make continous improvements as this property matures. Landscaping possibilities are the next frontier. If you have some ideas on animal proof plantings, we'd love to hear from you. We are looking forward to sharing the experience of this exclusive area with our guests.

Why the Owner Chose Ashtabula

I grew up on this land living like the Ashtabula native that I am with my 5 brothers, and my 1 sister. We crop farmed and sold fruits and vegetables in our front yard. Cider, Maple Syrup apples, peaches, cherries, strawberries, melons and more defined our existance. The shore life during our leisure time was wonderful. Sunsets, cool lake breezes, all night campouts on the shore while catfishing, late warm summer evenings swimming until our lips turned blue were all wholesome memories worth sharing. Our neighbors, the Housers, were our elder cousins and they were very social people. They always had house guests and their backyard was trellised with roses and white adirondacks with stately cottonwoods lining the bank. Their grounds were maintained to a standard on par for a victorian hotel. I experienced this culture early in my life and then I watched it taken away by industry as they moved in in the 60's and 70's and bought out the farmers to reserve lakefront land for industrial development. Through this time my elder relatives passed one by one and with them went their stories about boatloads of Blue Pike, troutlines and wayfaring wanderers that were taken in and given work. Fortunately, the land never did get used and in 2004 I was able to purchase the nicest piece of the old farm "the big ditch" is what we called it, and now I have the vision of that stately guest house and I am, on a smaller scale, trying to re-create that experience for others. Its my hope that there are people out there that would like to retreat to a place where they can relax, breath fresh air and get very close to a wide variety of natural peaceful and thought provoking experiences. This is a location where you can do Yoga just by standing still. Come visit us, you will understand why I chose to buy this property and share it with you.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

My lot gives a panoramic perspective on the greater coast of Ashtabula with the sunset as a focal point. Sitting back and relaxing in the Adirondacks on this lot cannot be improved upon if the weather and sunset cooperate and on most nights it does. When it doesn't the different moods of Lake Erie can all be appreciated in their full glory from this lots vantage point. Even on days when the Lake is angry you can feel its energy penetrate and charge your emotions. On the more peaceful days, sitting and watching the Bank Swallows engage in their aerial acrobatics is entertainment that goes well with a glass of wine, they are small, agile birds that can turn 90 degrees in a split second and they always fly in formation in pairs or triplets. I especially like the kayak treks to other pockets of beach and shore features that you just don't find anywhere else. For the birdlovers, you will be fascinated by the variety of birds on this property. I have seen regularly, Eagles, Barred Owls, Screech Owls, Pileated Woodpeckers, Herons, Kingfishers and many others. In early June the locust blooms fill the lake lot with a sweet honey aroma that attracts flocks of grossbeaks to the locust bloom canopy high above the ground. At the same time the first and second week of June when the perch are biting the best, you can sit in the adirondacks and watch squadrons of carp patrol the shore as they spawn. Beachcombing here will always yield something of interest. Driftwood is abundant on our shore and evening shore fires are really nice. Even the least interested child will likely feel the urge to engage in this environment.

    • We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at the the Blue Pike Lake House and couldn't have enjoyed it more. Lovely home, beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery, wildlife to enjoy and of course the chickens. Loved the chickens. Eric and Julene are great to rent from. Unfortunately power was lost in the area cutting our stay short but everything else couldn't have been any better. It's a perfect distance for us for a 2-3 night getaway and we hope to be able to do it again. Thanks Eric and Julene.

    • The perfect retreat for a quiet family gathering. From lakeview sunsets to midnight bonfires to musical evenings on the porch, it was absolutely perfect. The house is warm and welcoming; the setting is picturesque; and the owners gracious and accommodating. Highly recommended for an ideal break from the "real" world. Thank you so much for your hospitality.

    • If anyone is looking for a wonderful "place in the country" (just a couple minutes from town) to enjoy a vacation, I would truly recommend this one. My favorite room was the back porch, but my son's family thought they had the best with the upstairs. The kitchen is beautifully equipped. The greatest part of this package is the many acres of beautiful Ohio that was ours to enjoy, from the lake up through the trees, from early morning lake walks through evening barbecues. We loved the wildlife, and the chickens. The hosts were terrific.

    • My family and I (husband, 2 boys, brother-in-law) were fortunate to have found this "gem on Lake Erie" just before an Ohio family reunion. We were comfortable sleeping and showering (the hot water was great) and even though it rained each day, we had fun at Geneva on the Lake and watching dvd's on the flat screen tv in the family room. Every detail was thought of, down to the comfy towels and sheets to the rocking chairs, local information books, coffee maker, and artwork. I would recommend this rental for families or couples, there is a lot to do, or just do nothing and relax enjoying the view.

    • This is a great location. The lake is a great spot to hunt for fossils. We found plenty. The sunsets are magnigicent. We stayed when the cottage was being built and the owners were wonderful. I recommend this place over many. I grew up on the Lake Michigan and this is the best cottage I've stayed at in a long time.

    • What a great place to spend some down time. The area is quiet without being remote. Ashtabula harbor is only a few miles down Lake road, where my wife and I did some shopping. Geneva-on-the-lake is only ten miles away and is a great time for all. But the real reason to go is the peace and quiet. One night we saw a fawn and her mother eating some grass as we made our way across the street to have a camp fire and watch the sunset. I never saw so many stars in all my life. The beautiful lake and clean accomodations will bring me and my wife back each summer. We were there this past summer and the patios weren't finished. However they look like there done in the picture on this site. Can't wait to go back this summer and watch the sunset again from the new porch! Let me know if I have to bring my rocking chair. Thanks again Schwarz's for a great time. Brian Hulbert San Diego, CA

    • this is a BEAUTIFUL spot---the owner's description is, if anything, too modest. The lake views are stunning in every season....and the wildlife (including the chickens), are ever so interesting to even the most casual observer. I highly recommend this place in any season !!!!!
