This is a lovely location in the countryside. The rooms were probably the housekeeper’s quarters for the manor house. You have two bedrooms – one with a sitting area – and an eat-in kitchen. Our hosts were very thoughtful and had the heat on to ward off the morning chill and a bouquet of flowers from the garden. We were 1.5 hours to the Cliffs of Moher , just 1 hr. to the Burren and 20 minutes to Galway. It was a great location for the places we wanted to visit. We preferred staying in the country with all of the green pastures, stone walls and sheep. Our hosts recommended several sites in the nearby villages once they heard of our love for ruins. Our hosts are animal lovers with three wonderful, friendly, scratch-my-ears-please dogs and a lovely outside kitty who speaks to you whenever you appear at the door. They respected our privacy and we all came together whenever we saw them walking the dogs. So, in short, this is private, roomy, homey and a great base for sightseeing,. I would highly recommend it.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children.

Earlier this month my husband and I brought our 4 daughters to Ireland. The highlight of our trip was staying at Castle Hacket. Our daughters ages are 12, 17, 20 and 23. They each agreed that they felt like they were in a movie, staying at this beautiful home full of such history. They absolutely loved it. Phillip and Donagh were the most gracious and kind people. They went out of their way to make sure that our stay was perfect. We loved our tour of their beautiful property and learned more history from them of Ireland, then we did anywhere else on our trip. We love and appreciate old homes and the character and charm that comes with them. Philip and Donagh have worked so hard to preserve this charm and give their guests a real feel of Ireland. When we were on the internet from home, looking for places to stay, we were concerned if the location was too far from places we wanted to see, and if we would be too cramped with 6 of us. We found ourselves very comfortable with plenty of room even with four noisy, giggly daughters. We were also happy to discover that the location was perfect. We were close to charming small towns that we enjoyed, the town of Galway...which our girls loved, and the beautiful drive to the Cliffs of Moher. Even the drive to Dublin was very easy on the speedway. I came home and told all my friends and relatives that for the full experience..they must stay at Castle Hacket. Hands down, it was the highlight of Ireland.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.

One Star is too high of a rating for this place. Pay your money to an absentee English landlord and he will disappear, leaving you to fend for yourself. You will be left with a limited supply of lukewarm water trickling down to shower (which will will not be enough to wash your hair) and one small towel per person. You will have absolutely no modern conveniences such as clock, radio, or TV (not that it is necessary on a vacation in Ireland) but especially NO Internet or WIFI service which was essential to our working holiday. The pictures on the website of the interior of the house may exist, but the paying guests are never invited into the main part of the house and are limited to the "servants quarters". In essence, without hot water to clean, any quaint charm of the manor is unimportant and the incoveniences become magnified. Additionally, the place was filthy. Large spider and webs were everywhere, blankets and bedding were stained, and the toilet leaked with sewage flowing onto the bathroom floor. (You had to empty a pan that collected the sewage on a regular basis - something the owners failed to mention before they left.) After staying in similarly priced B & Bs throughout Ireland, this place was far from what was advertised and lacked basic amenities, even a towel rack to hang wet towels. There are much better similarly priced self-catering places in the area.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/3

Step back in time to a 1700's manor house. Beautiful setting, peaceful and relaxing. Hiking trail, with the remains of Hacket Castle on it, to walk across the road with awesome views of the valley and the ocean beyond. We arrived a lambing time and were able to see and pet the babies. Phillip and Donagh, our hosts, were very accommodating and fonts of historical information. Ireland is truly a lovely place in the spring. We would definitely return for another visit.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.

We really lucked out finding Hacket House. My husband and I stayed there for four days in June 2011. We wanted a real historical experience and we definitely got it, of course with a full bathroom and full kitchen which was great. The room we stayed in was cozy and just beautiful. It was very clean and seemed original to the house. Phillip and Donagh are absolutely wonderful, being so helpful and mindful of our privacy. Really a whole apartment to ourselves away from the main part of the house, but still attached. Really enjoyed the peace and quiet. and exploring the big estate was exciting. Just ask Phillip about anything and he probably knows the answer. If you are in to history like I am, this house is great and Phillip's knowledge is remarkable. Hacket House isn't far from town, so it's in a perfect location. We will definitely be back soon!Recommended for: Girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I stayed at Castle Hackett the end of April 09 for 10 days. What a blast! The proprietors Donagh and Phillip are real characters. The building itself is a true piece of Irish history. Accommodations are much like they were hundreds of years ago (plus showers and toilets of course:-) The grounds are very large (over 100 acres) and if you want a tour of the grazing sheep (I was there during lambing and helped feed the lambs) or the horses or if you want to fetch some eggs out of the hen house. I'll bet they might accomidate you. If you are into flying planes, there are some really cool ones in the hangar and there is a runway (of sorts) as well. The pub near by at Headford called Campbells has lots of locals and live music and is a great place to "thow back a pint or two". Then, of course, theres Galway near by. What a great town! With the river running right through it and great pubs, entertainment and shops galore. If you're not too prissy and want an authentic Irish experience...I highly recommend Castle Hackett. I'll sure be back. BelaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 9/9
