Turtleback Lodge is a unique cabin in a unique location. Being surrounded on three sides by water gives guests the choice of relaxing, playing in the water, taking a lazy paddleboat ride into the quiet cove or taking out your boat for any water sport you like. There is nothing to match the beauty of the sunsets over the lake- who says Key West has a corner on sunsets?? Having coffee in the early morning in the gazebo while the mist on the lake burns away, fish jump, birds of all sorts take flight.... heaven!! A fire pit placed out by the lake allows relaxing with the ones you love while grilling hot dogs or roasting marshmallows while an awesome show of stars twinkle overhead. Stay on site and enjoy endless fishing, swimming, paddleboating, sunbathing, grilling and relaxing. Ending the day soaking in the hot tub on the front porch is sure to be the doctor's order for a good night's sleep!

Or venture out and enjoy year round golf with several courses nearby, local dining and other activities such as tennis, bowling, mini-golf, paintball, and biking. Visit some of the many local cultural activities such as the Greenwood Arts Council, Community Theatre and Museum. Be sure to check for seasonal festivals and celebrations. Drive a little farther... an hour to an hour and a half or so...and find mountain trails, waterfalls, parks, concerts, and dining and shopping to suit almost any taste and desire.

Bring along your furry friend and let him ride in the paddle boat, swim in the cool waters or curl up under the swing on the porch. Your best friend is sure to be fascinated by the jumping fish, the cranes as they lazily take flight or just new places to sniff and run. Let tension go as you relax on the swinging bed in the cozy bedroom corner of the porch as the ceiling fan lulls you into dream land, relaxing to the sounds of frogs and crickets and the water lapping at the shore. As one guest commented about the swinging bed: "it's like being on a cruise because all you can see is water"!

Sleeping quarters include two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a queen bed, twin daybeds in the den and the twin size swinging bed in the bedroom corner of the enclosed porch. Each bed is made up, fresh and inviting with linens and towels supplied for your needs. Although there is sleeping space for 7 people, we definitely do NOT recommend trying to use the swinging bed on the porch as your place to sleep during the heat of the summer.

Our full kitchen has all the extras we could think of, including a blender, coffee maker, crock pot, deep fryer and all sorts of drink glasses! For cool mornings you can knock off the chill by firing up the gas log heater in the kitchen.

Because Turtleback Lodge is a hand built log cabin, built in the late 50's and early 60's with hand hewn logs, we are very aware of the need for some special precautions and care. We are firm in the **** NO SMOKING **** provision and ask that you understand that this simply is not the rental for you if you enjoy smoking. Please understand that smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property. You are responsible for any friends you invite to visit when you are a guest at TBL. We want to be up front about this so there are no 'surprises' for people when they find the information in the contract.

The fact that we are on a peninsula means we have over 1000 feet of shore line for fishing and exploring. We also have a boat ramp on site.

We supply information at the cabin so you have directions and driving distances for stores, restaurants, and also a place to rent a boat or jet skis close to the cabin, where to buy bait, a fishing license or go see a movie. We do all we can to make sure our guests have their needs met and beyond. The feedback we get helps us plan for improvements and new ways to make Turtleback Lodge a place our guests want to return to over and over again.

We have by no means a large cabin- our bedrooms and the bathroom are small- but we are happy to provide a unique, special place, unlike any other on the lake. A recent entry in our journal in the cabin for guests' comments : "We rent many places through VRBO and yours is the best!" .If there is any information you need please feel free to email or call during the business hours listed below please.

Relax in Unique Cabin Style on Your Own Peninsula

Year Purchased: 1985

Why the Owner Chose Waterloo

Turtleback Lodge was built on land bought by Mart's father when the lake was being built! If we were in the market for a get-away on Lake Greenwood we feel there could not possibly be a more perfect location. Having water on three sides gives us privacy, security, access to the 'big water' and the quiet and SO much more. It is a unigue peninsula and a unique cabin and we feel blessed to own it. When you are sitting in the hot tub or lying on the swinging bed, the views of water all around give the feel of being in the middle of the ocean! We have the ability to close off the outside world and completely relax. Being back in civilization with a short drive just adds to the overall convenience, whether there for a weekend or two weeks!

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin

Turtleback Trail is a private drive and, at the very end of the seven- tenths of a mile road, Turtleback Lodge. With well over 1000 feet of shore line, the cabin sits out on the peninsula facing the ‘big water’ and having the quiet mouth of the cove at the back. A stay at the cabin can be as active or as tranquil as desired. With a private boat ramp there is no driving off site to get your boat into the water. Year round you are able to dock under the covered floating boat dock, built with a wide side to allow sun bathing and relaxing, with a ladder at the end for swimmers. The cabin is child friendly as well as having extremely easy access for our guests who may find it difficult to climb stairs. There are no steps into the cabin and the walk from the cabin to the dock with the gazebo is short and only a slight incline. We have had friends who have physical limitations find the in and out stairs at the main swimming area also easy to use. For years Christmas trees have gone to a new home on the bottom of Lake Greenwood, around our floating dock. These weighted trees have formed great places for fish to hang out just waiting for you to wet a line. There is nothing better than a mess of fish cooked fresh at the lake- yum! The cabin is close enough to civilization to run out for pizza or to the store for supplies. But close enough to nature that you must drive slowly down the drive at night because deer are out in numbers, along with red foxes and rabbits and all sorts of four legged creatures.

Owner's Map of Waterloo

We inherited the cabin from Mart's parents and love every inch of it, making improvements whenever possible so that the cabin offers everything needed to make it the perfect place to relax or play. We live about ten miles from the cabin so we are able to be available to guests if there are any questions or needs. The wonderful comments and feedback from our guests have made us feel that others see all the love put into the cabin through the years. Mart is a full time farmer and Beverlee is a retired RN. Married for 38 years (YIKES! We don't even feel THAT old!!), we have celebrated more family occasions and events at the cabin than we can count, so it holds a huge place in our hearts.

Great vacation cottage, perfect location, Owners were fantastic

Guest: Una (Valley Center, California)
Date of Stay: 10/07/11 Review Submitted: 02/09/12

My wife and I stayed here for 10 days in Oct. 2011 and I could go on at great length about how wonderful this cottage was and what a great time we had. The only downside was they didn't arrange to have six or seven, 8 pound bass waiting to be caught when I arrived (maybe I forgot to request that added feature). Kidding aside - we had one of the best vacations we could imagine. The location on the peninsula has to be experienced to be believed - water view from everywhere. On a side note - the neighbors were quite friendly and added to the enjoyment we experienced. A few little tips if you rent here: --Close by groceries at the Piggly Wiggly --Not far from the town center of Greenwood with WalMart, Pancake Houses (I think there were 200-300 of them - per block) and all the other "big" places you may want although once you are in the accommodations and relaxing the if you are at all like us the last thing you may want is the hustle and bustle of the big places. --Best place for live bait is the little gas station in front of Piggly Wiggly (also good looking burgers but wife wouldn't let me indulge - something about ruining my dinner). --A couple of nice golf courses within a short distance (AND great green fees - especially for someone used to paying California rates). --Fun fishing off the dock - we had a little bit of turbulent weather so the bite wasn't real hot but caught a few (one 4+ pound cat - made my week). I could go on but I hope this gives an idea. Best thing I can say to voice our opinion - we are already looking at our 2012 dates and would love to return. Best part of the cabin - the owners.

Owner response:Wow! I am so appreciative of your kind words.... for once I am almost at a loss for words! Thank you so much! I was a little anxious about this particular visit- flying all the way across the country to come to our little cabin.... what if they don't like it? What if they are accustomed to big and super-fancy? Whew!!I am extremely pleased that people from every walk of life can enjoy our cabin and that we have had so many wonderful guests, like this couple, who have wanted to return! We love feedback and we love our guests!! Thank you so much for your review- just the sort of thing I look for when I am searching for a place to stay! I hope you are able to return this summer!!

Sure Thing

Guest: Bud (Aiken)
Date of Stay: 12/09/11 Review Submitted: 12/19/11

This was my second stay at TBL--hope for many more. This is a unique and special place. the owners are terrific to work with and the lodge could not be more comfortable. There's no gamble with this one--its a sure thing.

Owner response:We really appreciate your comments! It makes us especially glad to know how much you enjoyed the cabin in the "off season" when the weather was pretty chilly. I am always glad to see a return guest's name in an email. It feels like old friends are coming back because we know they share a fondness with us for Turtleback Trail and our little cabin at the end of the road! We hope you do return to TBL again and again.... thanks so much!

Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 08/06/11

Turleback Lodge is everything Mart and Bev says it is! We could not have asked for a better vacation spot. The lake was wonderful and relaxing. We loved the cabin, it's in the perfect location. The cabin offers all the comforts of home and then some. Mart and Bev have thought of everything! We have recommended this vacation spot to all our friends and are planning a return trip. Thanks so much Mart and Bev for a wonderful time.

Owner response:This is what we love to have- happy guests who want to return again and again! Much of our business is return guests and we are thrilled to be able to say that. You were wonderful guests and are welcome back any time! Thank you for taking the time to write the review of your stay and for the recommendations to your friends as well. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the stay at TBL. This year we have added the fire pit to enjoy out by the water, an umbrella for shade on the patio, games for inside and outside, a picnic table in the BBQ House and many other little things here and there. But we know that the lake and the location-out on the peninsula- are the main attractions and we are happy to be able to share the experience with great families like yours! Mike and Lisa, thank you so much!

An enchanted vacation!

Guest: KatherineandMike (Maryland)
Date of Stay: 05/21/11 Review Submitted: 06/21/11

My husband and I indulged ourselves with a two week vacation at this lakeside cabin for his 40th birthday and our 10th anniversary and had a wonderful vacation, everything was perfect. We chose this property because of its proximity to the water, abundant fishing and 400 ft of lake front views. We rented a boat, explored the whole lake, and were visited daily by all sorts of wildlife, including a pair of ducks, a baby turtle and a Grey Heron. Our hosts Beverlee and Mart, were just a phone call away, and very accessible, instantly responding to any and all questions/problems (Thank you Mart and Beverlee!). We had easy access to restaurants, etc but also appreciated the quiet and secluded nature of Turtleback Lodge, where everyone is friendly and dogs are loved. We hope to return next year and recommend this clean and comfortable cabin to any one looking for a quiet, family vacation. It is truly a family treasure we will remember forever.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your great review! We don't get to meet many of our guests " face to face" so we were thrilled when the occasion happened for us to put faces to the communication we had been having with you! Your family was so friendly and your little furry girls were absolutely adorable! Thank you for treating Turtleback Lodge with such care and being all 'round wonderful guests! I know the drive was pretty long for ya'll so we especially appreciate your desire to return next year! You are more than welcome to come back to TBL again and again! Thank you do much!

Magical Christmas!

Guest: Flastarr (Florida)
Date of Stay: 12/23/10 Review Submitted: 04/14/11

We had the most relaxing, magical Christmas! Our family of four as well as our American Bulldog drove up from Florida, hoping to have a stress-free holiday in a colder climate and that is exactly what we got! Before our trip, Beverlee was a joy todeal with and wanted to assure us that all our needs would be met. When we arrived, the Christmas tree was sparkling in the window and the location was spectacular with a view of the lake from every angle. Every comfort was in place and there were so many extras. The quaint cabin was decorated for the holidays but it also had so many quirky and adorable fishing items. As the weather got colder, Mart came over to install a heater on the pipes so they wouldn't freeze and it was so nice to meet him and know that they were thinking of us. We loved having the fireplace and made a fire every evening (Mart had plenty of wood ready for us before we got there). The hot tub was wonderful as was the swinging bed! My husband enjoyed fishing from the dock as well as the paddleboat. I loved waking up to enjoy my coffee in the gazebo each chilly morning and watching the sun rise and listening to the train off in the distance. My children loved hanging out watching movies, reading, playing games and exploring outside. On Christmas Day, it actually snowed and we were able to make a mini snowman, have a snowball fight and just enjoy the beauty of a white Christmas- a dream come true for us! I can honestly tell you I have never felt more worry-free and content! We did not want to leave! We hope to have the opportunity to make it back during the summer and invite some of our NC family to meet us there so they can share the experience. I would recommend this cabin to anyone and everyone! Thank you to Beverlee and Mart for a fantastic vacation!

Owner response:We had such joy decorating the cabin, knowing there would be a family there for Christmas! I had no idea when we started renting our little cabin that I would so love hearing about the memories our guests made while staying there. Every time we are getting things ready I am thinking about the guests, hoping they have perfect weather, hoping they catch fish, enjoy the fire, the hammock, the gazebo....we really appreciate hearing what they most enjoyed and what we can do to make things even more enjoyable the next tiime. Christmas is such a wonderful, spiritual time of year and we are so happy a family was able to have time at Turtleback Lodge that they will always hold in a special place in their hearts!

Terrific Cabin on the Lake!

Guest: Beth & Steve (Hilton Head, SC)
Date of Stay: 09/24/10 Review Submitted: 09/30/10

We just had the opportunity to stay at this charming cabin for the weekend...it has the feel of a family treasure that you can't wait to come back to, year after year! The location was ideal, the cabin is surrounded by views, wonderful breezes. We found the cabin clean and it had everything we needed for the weekend! We especially enjoyed seeing the sunset in the evening, and watching the (full) moon rise at night. Great recommendation on where to rent a boat..Water's Edge was great! Thanks to the owners for opening up this treasure to rent!

Owner response:We are so thrilled that the time at Turtleback Lodge was what you were looking for! We have always loved the gorgeous sunsets as well. We look forward to your return visits and will do all we can to make it as relaxing as possible. We really do like suggestions and we are looking for the perfect fire pit for the front yard, thanks to another guest's note to us. Even though guests have the options of fires in the stone fireplace in the den and the chimney/grill in the BBQ house, we can see how special a firepit out in the front yard would be. It would offer another experience. So, all of our guests, please keep the reviews and suggestions coming! Thank you so much!

There's No Other Slice of Heaven Like Turtleback Lodge

Guest: Tracy (Maryland)
Date of Stay: 08/30/10 Review Submitted: 09/27/10

Our family of four -- with 2 young daughters -- enjoyed a stay at Turtleback Lodge this summer that was all too short! The little cabin is PRISTINE, and more full of character and charm than you can imagine. Beverlee and Mart are fantastic "hosts," making sure every detail is covered to ensure a worry-free, magical stay. We loved the refreshing deep water right off the end of the dock, and swam every day. We don't fish, but the lake is LOADED, as evidenced by all the fishing activity we saw. We loved the mist on the lake in the mornings, the lazy days in and around the comfortable cabin, and the twilight hours chatting in the gazebo by the soothing shore. Our daughters loved the swing bed on the porch, the model sailboats in the rafters, and the "real logs" that make up the house. There's a paddleboat, too. Beverlee even provides a thoughtful collection of toys, puzzles, games and crayons for little ones, but we found we never had time for them! Too much lake living to do! We found a great farmer's market in Greenwood (with Beverlee's help), and enjoyed fresh local produce all week. We also ate out one night, guided by a complete list of local eateries provided at the cottage. What a wonderful, rejuvenating, fun time! We'll be back, for sure!

Owner response:We love hearing from our guests and knowing that their stay at Turtleback Lodge was all they hoped for. The history behind our cabin has made it special to three generations in our family. Knowing that other families are making wonderful memories there is an honor and we thrill at knowing that children will hold time spent at our cabin in their minds and hearts into adulthood. We love sharing time at TBL with families who appreciate the care we have put into it. Thank you for this fantastic review!

Date of Stay: 08/20/10 Review Submitted: 08/23/10

This property is just great, the cabin is like a museum with all the historical effects. I saw something different every day. We had some first time fishers with us and guess what , everyone caught fish. I never heard such laughing. We had a ball. Nice spacious location, cabin, parking, sleeping areas. Thanks so much for the memories. I am glad i live in Greenwood and am close by.Will stay again. Forgot to tell you about the nice swimming area especially for small children and paddle boat.

Owner response:Thank you SO much for your comments! We love hearing from our guests and are always happy when people want to come back! That is the best compliment we could hope for and are pleased that so many guests have come back for a second stay! We hope you will stay with us again and again! Thanks!!

A relaxing retreat

Guest: Hunter's mom (Crystal Lake, IL)
Date of Stay: 03/21/10 Review Submitted: 03/31/10

We stayed at Turtleback Lodge over our spring break with our two golden retrievers. What a find! Having the lake on three side of the house was wonderful. The cabin had every convenience we could ask for, but was rustic at the same time. The decorating is unique, and the boat in the rafters of the living room even has a light! We've traveled a lot and have rented houses in the states and in Mexico. This one was the best for the price and location. A great getaway.

Owner response:Thank you SO much for the feedback! We enjoyed meeting you and the "Boys". We love knowing that our little jewel is appreciated by others. We hope you will stay with us if ever in this area again. I believe I heard Hunter say he wants to come back! :o) Beverlee and Mart
