Relax in Unique Cabin Style on Your Own Peninsula

Turtleback Lodge is a unique cabin in a unique location. Being surrounded on three sides by water gives guests a view of water from every single window in the cabin!. Enjoy relaxing, playing in the water, taking a lazy paddleboat ride into the quiet cove or taking your boat out for any water sport you like. There is nothing to match the beauty of the sunsets over the lake- who says Key West has a corner on sunsets?? Having coffee in the early morning in the gazebo while the mist on the lake burns away, fish jump, birds of all sorts take flight.... heaven!! A fire pit placed out by the lake allows relaxing with the ones you love while grilling hot dogs or roasting marshmallows while an awesome show of stars twinkle overhead. Stay on site and enjoy endless fishing, swimming, paddleboating, sunbathing, grilling and relaxing. Ending the day soaking in the hot tub on the front porch is sure to be the doctor's order for a good night's sleep!
Or venture out and enjoy year round golf with several courses nearby, local dining and other activities such as tennis, bowling, mini-golf, paintball, and biking. Visit some of the many local cultural activities such as the Greenwood Arts Council, Community Theatre and Museum. Be sure to check for seasonal festivals and celebrations. Drive a little farther... an hour to an hour and a half or so...and find mountain trails, waterfalls, parks, concerts, and dining and shopping to suit almost any taste and desire.
Bring along your furry friend and let him ride in the paddle boat, swim in the cool waters or curl up under the swing on the porch. Your best friend is sure to be fascinated by the jumping fish, the cranes as they lazily take flight or just new places to sniff and run. Let tension go as you relax on the swinging bed in the cozy bedroom corner of the porch as the ceiling fan lulls you into dream land, relaxing to the sounds of frogs and crickets and the water lapping at the shore. As one guest commented about the swinging bed: 'it's like being on a cruise because all you can see is water'!
Sleeping quarters include two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a queen bed, twin daybeds in the den and the twin size swinging bed in the bedroom corner of the enclosed porch. Each bed is made up, fresh and inviting with linens and towels supplied for your needs. Although there is sleeping space for 7 people, we definitely do NOT recommend trying to use the swinging bed on the porch as your place to sleep during the heat of the summer.
Our full kitchen has all the extras we could think of, including a blender, coffee maker, crock pot, deep fryer and all sorts of drink glasses! For cool mornings you can knock off the chill by firing up the gas log heater in the kitchen.
If you haven't been to TBL in a while there are a few additions.... a diving board on the floating dock has been a favorite. A gas fish fryer and a picnic table in the BBQ house have made eating out there more fun and we are just finishing up in the kitchen (March 2013) with some needed updates: new cabinets, counter tops, dishwasher, stove and sink. We maintain the character of the cabin with every change we make but do all we can to have modern convinces and a few 'extra' when possible.
Because Turtleback Lodge is a hand built log cabin, built in the late 40's and early 50's with hand hewn logs, we are very aware of the need for some special precautions and care. We are firm in the **** NO SMOKING **** provision and ask that you understand that this simply is not the rental for you if you enjoy smoking. Please understand that smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property. You are responsible for any friends you invite to visit when you are a guest at TBL. We want to be up front about this so there are no 'surprises' for people when they find the information in the contract.
The fact that we are on a peninsula means we have over 1000 feet of shore line for fishing and exploring. We also have a boat ramp on site.
We supply information at the cabin so you have directions and driving distances for stores, restaurants, and also a place to rent a boat or jet skis close to the cabin, where to buy bait, a fishing license or go see a movie. We do all we can to make sure our guests have their needs met and beyond. The feedback we get helps us plan for improvements and new ways to make Turtleback Lodge a place our guests want to return to over and over again.
We have by no means a large cabin- our bedrooms and the bathroom are small- but we are happy to provide a unique, special place, unlike any other on the lake. A recent entry in our journal in the cabin for guests' comments : 'We rent many places through VRBO and yours is the best!' .If there is any information you need please feel free to email or call during the business hours listed below.

When planning our Christmas vacation to South Carolina this year, we asked each other what would make the trip a perfect "10". Our holiday week at Turtleback was just that and more, a "10+". Thank you for all the beautiful decorations and personal touches. The tree was immediately "Ann-Marie's", with your fantastic bobber lights and fisherman's theme! As we walked in, its glow welcomed us with a cheerful Christmas feeling. Fishing kept everyone happy and we also enjoyed visits with family and friends throughout the week. We have to agree however, that the best times were "coming home" to Turtleback each day and ending each evening with a roaring fire. We're glad to have returned so soon after our summer vacation. Christmas was the most relaxing we've had in countless years thanks to you all. Beverlee and Mart, may the New Year bring you and your family many blessings as you continue to share your little piece of heaven with others.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Knowing that your Christmas was especially memorable in part because of your stay at Turtleback Lodge makes us so happy. We love Christmas and have had guests for the holidays at the cabin for two years now. It's great having a reason to put up the fishing tree and put out the moose and fishing items that are perfect for the cabin. You guys are so wonderful to us and have added a lot to the cabin with your two stays and we look forward to communicating with you about future stays. We have been blessed with such thoughtful guests and like ya'll, many have come to feel like they have come "home" when they are at TBL. That is a real compliment to the ambiance of the lake, the peninsula and the feeling that is the cabin itself. We have tried to add to that rustic charm with comforts of home and extras beyond the usual. Having great guests, like you guys, who give us suggestions we can work with and make things even better has made it seem less like work and more like a development of relationships with our guests, even if we never actually meet many face to face. Thank you for taking time to give folks who are looking for a certain kind of vacation a review of your stay. We value every review, suggestion and comment. As we tell potential guests, a cabin is not for everyone- we don't have fancy bathrooms or big bedrooms but if you are looking for relaxing time by the water with a hot tub, fire place and BBQ House, we hope you will give us a second look.

We were originally looking to stay on the Gulf of Mexico beach, but had to change our travel plans. We decided to change our vacation search to lakefront, rather than ocean front...and BOY ARE WE GLAD WE DID! My husband's only request for our vacation spot was to be on water somewhere, and we came across the Turtleback Lodge. We quickly changed our plan once I got in contact with Beverlee. We are hoping to make TBL a regular get-away place for our family. The cabin and property are exactly advertised...nothing has been forgotten, everything you'll need is provided! This cabin would be great to visit during any season; there is so much to do but prefect for relaxing, too. We absolutely loved our stay at the cabin, and we are already planning to come back in the not-too-distant future. We were really looking forward to a few days away with our little son and TBL was EXACTLY what we'd hoped for. We couldn't get enough of the porch and water. Our one year old baby loved crawling around on the grass and around the cabin. There was plenty of room for him to explore, and our dog loved relaxing right by the door on the porch, too. It was perfect! You have all the details accounted for. We loved cooking on the grill, as well as watching both sunrises and sunsets, playing a board game on a lazy afternoon, a short paddle boat ride around the cove, a warm evening fire in the fireplace, a DVD player for an evening movie, etc. We have so many wonderful memories of our days at the cabin. We were able to read at the table under the gazebo which is such a hard thing to come by when we're home. We enjoyed breakfast as the sun came up out on the porch. We've had nothing but good things to say about our time in South Carolina and people are already loving the pictures we've shared with them! Thank you for everything and, most of all, for sharing your property with all the guests to have the opportunity to stay at TBL. Beverlee was extremely easy to work with! We had trouble finding a place that we could bring our dog--Turtleback Lodge was very pet-friendly! This was our first time ever booking something online without ever being there or without a family or friend recommendation. Now, we are able to recommend your cabing to those we know! Our days at TBL were a huge refreshing blessing to our family!Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and personal review of your stay at Turtleback Lodge! We are thrilled that the cabin was exactly what you were looking for. And we are so glad that you want to come back- we hope you do make TBL your go-to place for some time away from home. And last but not least, we appreciate so very much your spreading of the word that TBL is a great place for a short get way or a longer vacation. A personal recommendation from a friend or family member trumps an ad any day. :o) Thank you again for your review and we hope to hear from you again very soon!

What a beautiful cabin, from the moment we arrived, we were in all. The cabin was so awesome, the pictures (although are great) do not do it justice. There is a waterview from every window. We just love the way Mart and Beverlee decorated the cabin, and they go out of their way to make sure you have a comfortable and relaxing vacation. We are already planning 2 trips to the cabin next year. Thanks for sharing you little gem with us.Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are so appreciative for your comments! Having guests who are happy is our main goal and every time someone comes back for another stay we get to know them better and better, even if only by email. We are thrilled that you are now a part of our little Turtleback family and hope you do return over and over again. The way guests like you take such good care of our little cabin lets us know that you honestly appreciate TBL as much as we do. I look forward to seeing your name pop up in our email again soon! Thanks again!

Our son, who came up to spend time with us from Georgia, said it best (and he is now 27 years old), "This is the greatest thing you could have ever done, getting this cabin. As long as you're coming here, count me in!" Now looking back at our departure date, after nine of the most relaxing days we've ever had on a vacation, none of us wanted to leave. We've traveled many miles together as a family and put a lot of thought into what we consider a vacation and time away from jobs and home life in order to reboot and revitalize. Our stay at Turtleback Lodge fulfilled more than our highest expectations. This was a year to find a place near family that also included water, and our internet search brought us to this little piece of paradise. Every window we glanced out of gave us a view of the lake, those visiting, fishing, boating, or someone enjoying a siesta on the hammock. We were blessed to have daily breezes, found the bass loved to evade even our most experienced fishermen, but loved the solitude and peaceful atmosphere in all cases. We came with hopes of connecting with family in the area and yet still hoped to enjoy our own space. Turtleback Lodge was a perfect fit for us. We look forward to our return during the holidays. Also when it's time to think about next summer's vacation, and it's below freezing in Ohio, we'll cherish our memories of Turtleback. Plans are already in the making for days on jet skis, how to catch those sneaky bass, and spending many more days simply relaxing. Truly, Turtleback Lodge is a place we now consider "Home Away From Home".Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you so much- we love sharing our cabin with folks who love it as much as we do and it was obvious from the moment Mart met you that you definitely shared our feelings! You have given such a great word picture of what lake living is like that I think people looking for a place to stay will know exactly what they would be getting at TBL. Your thoughtfulness in everything you had planned with local family was much appreciated by us. The drive to the cabin is lined by our family and friends and your consideration in keeping traffic to a minimum was just as you promised. Maintaining the feeling of serenity is so important for the cabin and the others who call Turtleback Trail home. We have developed a wonderful group of repeat guests who do indeed call Turtleback Lodge a bit of home away from home for themselves and there could not be a bigger compliment for our rustic, quirky little cabin. Thanks again!

If there was a 10 Star Rating, I would give it to "Turtleback". The owners have not missed a detail in making you feel pampered. The Cabin is immaculate, but rustic at the same time. The thing that the pictures do not show is the feeling you have when you are there. It is relaxation at its best. Although there are houses in the vicinity, the way the house is situated gives you the feeling of seclusion. There is a great area for the little ones to swim and a cove to test your stamina in the paddle boat. My little nephew was fascinated with the suspended bed on the back porch and says "When we go back he is sleeping there". The Cabin has a very nice boat dock and the gazebo is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee. There is also a cooking shed that has everything that you would need for outdoor grilling both charcoal or gas, My family and I look forward to returning.Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you SO much for your kind words! We never get tired of hearing what guests love about our little cabin! It is hard to tell a complete story in pictures and your description of the relaxation response was perfect. I think you understand Turtleback Lodge completely! And please tell your little nephew that we have added something new, what the first guests to try it out jokingly called a jumping board because the grandchild loved jumping off it over and over and over! The diving board is beside the ladder into the water on the floating dock and I do think kids large and small with get a lot of use from it. It is as low as it could be so there will not be any Olympic trick dives but probably a lot of jumping. We will have the swinging bed ready for your nephew when he comes back. Thank you for everything!

Our family had an amazing time at TBL! It was exactly what we had hoped for: quiet, relaxing, peaceful, private, natural and beautiful. It offered us the ease to enjoy all the things we love to do on vacation: swim, ski, boating, tubing, resting, reading, bonfire, yard games....family time together. The cabin was so full of charm and character. The Simmons think of everything and we were not in want of anything! All the necessities of home were there when we arrived. We even found stocked word search books and puzzles to keep us entertained on our rainy day. The cabin itself and the lot it's on could not have been more ideal. It's both rustic and yet modernly convenient. Favorites: (Husband) LOVED the Bass fishing and caught many "keepers" every day. He was in fishing heaven. (10 yr old daughter) Becoming "friends" with the smaller fish in the boat dock "pool" area. She put her camping chair in the shallow water and all the fish swam up to her and she loved them all. (Me/Mom) I loved the cabin and the proximity to the water. We were just steps to the water from any angle of the cabin. I also loved that the lake is not very busy and it felt like "ours" much of the time. We all loved the occasional train that would pass by on the bridge too! The lake itself is pristine and uncluttered by too many houses and cramped lots. It was so beautiful and natural. We wouldn't change a thing. It was the hardest vacation for any of us to leave. It's been 2 weeks and I am not convinced we are even "home" yet. We are already looking forward to our next visit! One last note: We've had some amazing vacations and have dealt with many kind people but no one comes close to comparing to the service we received from the Simmons; they're good people.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We love your review.... thank you for letting us know what each of you liked best! And I have to add- the pictures that you (Karel) took and have so kindly shared with us are some of the most beautiful I have seen! I am putting them on the web sites as I can and so appreciate your camera's view of Turtleback's character. As the seasons change and sands shift and the landscape is altered by new trees and other changes it is awesome to have pictures that show all this. Your eye for detail is awesome! And as we were reading your review, Mart's favorite part was your last sentence- we can't think of anything better for someone to say.... that you think we are "good people" was the ultimate compliment! Thank you for your words, for your care and love for our little cabin! We do hope you will be back again and again!

This cabin is a true treasure. My family stayed here for the Memorial Day Weekend and had a blast. The cabin was perfect with all the amenities. The location was great for relaxing and fishing. The barbecue house was a plus for us to cook outside. Beverlee and Mart have put together a real vacationer's dream. I have stayed at other cabins on Lake Greenwood, but this out-rates the others by far. We will definitely be coming back in the future. Thanks Beverlee and Mart for making my family's vacation one of those great family memories. Owner response: Thank you SO much for letting us know you were happy and what you enjoyed! I appreciate the time you took so soon after leaving to write a review that I feel sure will help others who are looking for a relaxing place to stay. We love feedback and try our best to have the cabin as user-friendly as possible for all of our guests. You were wonderful to do business with and we look forward to hearing from you in the future! We spent an enjoyable honeymoon weekend here. The location is private and peaceful, just what we needed after the wedding. We made great memories here, like having our first breakfast together as husband and wife in the gazebo overlooking the lake. The fire pit and the hot tub were a great way to end a day of boating. Thanks for a relaxing honeymoon!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children.
Owner response: Our first wedding since we started renting the cabin! The pictures were beautiful! It is such a great honor to know that our cabin will forever be in one of your most precious memories! We wish you many many years of happiness and hope you will come back to Turtleback Lodge from time to time to relax and regroup. Thank you for sharing you comments!!

My family has been to the beach, mountains and to Disney but this is by far the best vacation we have ever taken. So many times I would come back from vacation absolutely worn out and in need of time to recover before going back to work--but not this time. I feel relaxed and refreshed. I spent my time sleeping, reading, napping and baiting my wife's hook. The cabin was well cared for and decorated with skill that adds to its nostalgia. I was taken back several decades to a quieter and more peaceful time. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us. We will be back.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car.
Owner response: Wow! We have never been told we could help families have a better time than at the "happiest place on earth"! :o) Thank you so much for your review and for being all 'round awesome guests! I hope you and your family will be back again and again! Knowing our little cabin on the peninsula has helped refresh busy people and been a part of special time with family is worth everything to us. We treasure having guests review their stay because we know it is valued by potential guests more than any advertising we could do or anything we ourselves could say about our property. Thank you again!

My wife and I stayed here for 10 days in Oct. 2011 and I could go on at great length about how wonderful this cottage was and what a great time we had. The only downside was they didn't arrange to have six or seven, 8 pound bass waiting to be caught when I arrived (maybe I forgot to request that added feature). Kidding aside - we had one of the best vacations we could imagine. The location on the peninsula has to be experienced to be believed - water view from everywhere. On a side note - the neighbors were quite friendly and added to the enjoyment we experienced. A few little tips if you rent here: --Close by groceries at the Piggly Wiggly --Not far from the town center of Greenwood with WalMart, Pancake Houses (I think there were 200-300 of them - per block) and all the other "big" places you may want although once you are in the accommodations and relaxing the if you are at all like us the last thing you may want is the hustle and bustle of the big places. --Best place for live bait is the little gas station in front of Piggly Wiggly (also good looking burgers but wife wouldn't let me indulge - something about ruining my dinner). --A couple of nice golf courses within a short distance (AND great green fees - especially for someone used to paying California rates). --Fun fishing off the dock - we had a little bit of turbulent weather so the bite wasn't real hot but caught a few (one 4+ pound cat - made my week). I could go on but I hope this gives an idea. Best thing I can say to voice our opinion - we are already looking at our 2012 dates and would love to return. Best part of the cabin - the owners.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car.
Owner response: Wow! I am so appreciative of your kind words.... for once I am almost at a loss for words! Thank you so much! I was a little anxious about this particular visit- flying all the way across the country to come to our little cabin.... what if they don't like it? What if they are accustomed to big and super-fancy? Whew!!I am extremely pleased that people from every walk of life can enjoy our cabin and that we have had so many wonderful guests, like this couple, who have wanted to return! We love feedback and we love our guests!! Thank you so much for your review- just the sort of thing I look for when I am searching for a place to stay! I hope you are able to return this summer!!

About the owner: We inherited the cabin from Mart's parents and love every inch of it, making improvements whenever possible so that the cabin offers everything needed to make it the perfect place to relax or play. We live about ten miles from the cabin so we are able to be available to guests if there are any questions or needs. The wonderful comments and feedback from our guests have made us feel that others see all the love put into the cabin through the years. Mart is a full time farmer and Beverlee is a retired RN. Married for 40 years (YIKES! We don't even feel THAT old!!), we have celebrated more family occasions and events at the cabin than we can count, so it holds a huge place in our hearts.
Why the Owner Chose Waterloo:
Turtleback Lodge was built on land bought by Mart's father when the lake was being built! If we were in the market for a get-away on Lake Greenwood we feel there could not possibly be a more perfect location. Having water on three sides gives us privacy, security, access to the 'big water' and the quiet and SO much more. It is a unigue peninsula and a unique cabin and we feel blessed to own it. When you are sitting in the hot tub or lying on the swinging bed, the views of water all around give the feel of being in the middle of the ocean! We have the ability to close off the outside world and completely relax. Being back in civilization with a short drive just adds to the overall convenience, whether there for a weekend or two weeks!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Turtleback Trail is a private drive and, at the very end of the seven- tenths of a mile road, Turtleback Lodge. With well over 1000 feet of shore line, the cabin sits out on the peninsula facing the ‘big water’ and having the quiet mouth of the cove at the back. A stay at the cabin can be as active or as tranquil as desired. With a private boat ramp there is no driving off site to get your boat into the water. Year round you are able to dock under the covered floating boat dock, built with a wide side to allow sun bathing and relaxing, with a ladder at the end for swimmers. The cabin is child friendly as well as having extremely easy access for our guests who may find it difficult to climb stairs. There are no steps into the cabin and the walk from the cabin to the dock with the gazebo is short and only a slight incline. We have had friends who have physical limitations find the in and out stairs at the main swimming area also easy to use. For years Christmas trees have gone to a new home on the bottom of Lake Greenwood, around our floating dock. These weighted trees have formed great places for fish to hang out just waiting for you to wet a line. There is nothing better than a mess of fish cooked fresh at the lake- yum! The cabin is close enough to civilization to run out for pizza or to the store for supplies. But close enough to nature that you must drive slowly down the drive at night because deer are out in numbers, along with red foxes and rabbits and all sorts of four legged creatures.
