Honolii Beach is just a short walk down our one-lane road and has a beautiful picnic area with lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. Honolii is very popular and has consistent waves year-round for surfers and boogie boarders. The freshwater river that empties into the bay has a huge swimming hole and two beautiful waterfalls just upstream.
Hiking, jogging, bikeriding, surfing, swimming, or just kicking back are activities you can do from the vacation cottage without driving anywhere. Our convenient location also makes it simple to visit the many scenic areas around the island.

Terre's place was our base for trips to the park. It had everything we needed and was plenty quiet. We sat on the lanai in the evenings for a drink while we sorted through the days photos and e-mails. The frogs reminded us of our trip to Barbados 2 years ago. Very soothing. We would recommend this spot as a quiet spot away from town and more "Hawaii" than others we stayed at. Terre has great ideas and recommendations and is a great host.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Terre has a wonderful little cottage to spend your vacation in. Yes, there is a road nearby and yes, the frogs can be loud...but that should be overlooked and come anyway! There is a lot to see around the area or you can just sit on the lanai and relax. Terre is a great person and very knowledgeable about the area. Her 2 dogs and 2 cats are sweet animals (I wanted to sneak them in to sleep with me...laughing). It is fun to sit outside and listen to the frogs at night. I am a light sleeper and had no problem sleeping with them or the little traffic noise. You can also hear the ocean from this cottage. The neighborhood is very quiet around this place too. WELL worth the stay and you also get to be more IN Hawaii than a hotel!! Thanks Terre (AND animals...:) )Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Terre's place was just as billed. It is close to Hilo (10 min drive from the airport) and easy to find. She kindly left the lights on for us and left recommendations for things to do, including a nice walk past the beach. The property is a bit dated though: the bed creaks, and the water pressure in the shower is poor. That and the noise keep me from giving this an above average rating. The coqui frogs are loud, but the property backs up to the highway, which is louder. I didn't sleep well, so keep that in mind when renting this cottage. Deeper sleepers may have no problem.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.

This is a great place to stay just outside of Hilo. It was very easy to find which is nice after a long day and flight. Simple, clean and well equiped little place. My son who was looking at University of Hawaii, Hilo and I stayed here. We just loved it. If you are noise sensitive bring a pair of earplugs, but we loved listening to the frogs and found them extremely relaxing. You will not find a better place to stay for the price. So reasonable and so wonderful. Many thanks to Terre.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Experience a 'true Aloha' by experiencing this 'wonderful - home away from home' in beautiful Hawaii! Terre is a wonderful, caring, honest and full of Aloha spirit owner - rare to find in today's world. As a former Kama'ainas, we highly recommend this home to any visitor who appreciates the good old Hawaiian hospitality, great location and its caring owner, Terre. I highly encourage you to support honest, caring and hard working vacation owner such as Terre - stay away from other owners who require high cleaning fee, deposit and full payment on sight unseen properties. Enjoyed our stay in Terre's cottage. The cottage was clean and larger than it looks in the pictures. It has everything you could need for an enjoyable stay. The kitchen is supplied nicely for preparing meals in. Doesn't have an oven, but who comes to Hawaii to bake. The 2 burner glass top stove works well. Plenty of pots and pans, dishes, and utincils. We had more than enough towels to last 6 days. The walk-in shower was nice, and the bathroom is ample in size. Lots of drawers for clothes storage, and my wife appreciated the hidden hanging rack for dresses. The location is very convenient to downtown Hilo. It'a a five minute drive from the cottage to free parking in the heart of Hilo's shopping district. The frogs get pretty noisy at night, and there is some traffic noise, but I still give it 5 stars.Sure beats a hotel where you never know what kind of noises you'll have to put up with. We visit the big island, Hilo side, once a year. Will be staying here again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed here during a 4 day trip from Oahu. It was our first time on the Big Island and we wanted a convenient spot to explore the Hilo side of the island--Akaka Falls, Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches, and so on. This cottage was very convenient to all these locations, situated just off of State Route 19 which you can take south into Hilo's downtown, or north to see the waterfalls and Umauma (where we went ziplining). The cottage has a fully stocked kitchen with a 2-burner stove and a small fridge, which helped us save time and money by preparing breakfast and leftovers. There's plenty of room for 2 people, and we were within walking distance to Honolii Beach. Warning--the surf and the black sand can be a little rough if you're not used to it! Terre was warm and accommodating, even printing out our boarding passes for us. Just a couple of things to know: the local frogs are loud at night as some reviewers have noted. They didn't bother us at all, but if you're not used to hearing sounds at night you might want earplugs. Also, Hilo side of the island has a lot of mosquitoes. If you come to this cottage, we left some bug spray under the kitchen sink for you! Finally, for the ladies, there's no hair dryer (at least I didn't find one) but I brought my own so it was no big deal. I'm sure if I had asked Terre she would have found one for me! Overall we had a wonderful stay and I couldn't be more pleased. It was a great value and a lovely home away from home. -AnnDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Everything was as described on the website. An excellent value for a rental. The dead end street is very safe and private. Quick walk to Honoli'i beach. It was a very fabulous base for exploring the whole east side without traffic. Terre was friendly and provided some snorkeling equipment, beach mats and superior boogie boards. Her pets were a delight as we missed our own. My only caution would be to bring ear plugs if loud coqui frog noise would make it hard to sleep. They helped us during our 4 night stay. I'd stay there again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing.

Terre's description and the other reviews describe the advantages of this rental very nicely, but there were 2 things that meant we couldn't give it the 5 stars. We didn't get to meet Terre as she was off island during our 4 night stay. Noise at night was a problem getting used to as we live in an exceptionally quiet neighbourhood., Both the local frogs and highway noise, (the property backs onto a highway) took some adjustment for us. The facilities are very nice.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing.

As others have already stated, Terri's cottage is wonderful! The location couldn't be better, and the inside of the cottage is adorable (far better than what the pictures show). Terri and her pets are all quite friendly, but they will also respect your privacy :) It was a terrific little "home" to return to after being out all day, and we loved the nearby beach and just walking around the neighborhood. We stayed 4 nights, but I wish we had stayed longer. Highly recommend this relaxing and conveniently located cottage!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
