About Guy Berryessa

We're a two dad family with two beautiful daughters who try to spend our summers on Hawaii and dream of the day we can live there full-time.

Guy Berryessa purchased this studio in 2004

Why Guy Berryessa chose Papaikou

We wanted a well-built home, with gorgeous yard and lots of wood and space, that we could share with family and friends from around the world, as well as occasional guests who would like to enjoy our little slice of paradise! We loved the location and setting--a perfect balance of quiet, lush surroundings, yet a beautiful short drive to town.

What makes this studio unique

It has a gorgeous rural location on the stream and waterfall, yet so very close to town and its conveniences. That we can bike or walk to beaches is a plus as well!

Tropical Rainforest 101

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is as described plus a couple of positives. In the photo it shows the apartment as the middle level but it was not clear to us that because of the slope of the land the entry door is directly off of the garage with no steps - this would be a very acceptable rental for someone with mobility issues. Also my perception of a "studio apartment" was of something much smaller - the apartment is quite large and comfortable.

We have lived in a Central American rain forest in the past and we looked forward to the sounds and smells. A warning to someone new to this type of environment: 1 - it rains a lot, 2 - tropical rain forests are NOISY at night for those who haven't learned to appreciate nature's sounds at their finest), 3 - it rains a lot. (The waterfalls described in the information about the house is literally next to the back yard and makes a comforting sound while lying in bed.)

The surrounding tropical rain forests are beautiful with philodendron leaves the size of large umbrellas and waterfalls in every glen.

The volcano did cooperate so I was able to check "walk up to a hot lava flow" off my bucket list!

We were NOT able to SCUBA dive as it was too rough (windy) on the Hilo side and IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE FROM THE KONA SIDE TO THE HILO SIDE AND STAY BELOW "FLYING" ELEVATION OF 2000 FT. (We mention this only as an FYI to other divers for planning purposes.) We did find some great snorkel sites as we drove around the island.

We were able to buy a 5# bag of 100% local coffee for 20% off because the bag didn't seal quite right when we visited a local plantation! (Try the Captain Cook farmer's market for good prices on macadamia nuts and coffee direct from the farms.)

We saw pretty much everything we wanted to on the island but put a bit over 1000 miles on the rental car (again for planning purposes).

Overall the property made a very comfortable base for exploring and experiencing the island.

Great place for touring Hilo and Hamuma Coast

  • 4 of 5

This is a well kept, nice little studio with full kitchen that was a great location for seeing Hilo and the sites along the north east shore. It's clean and well kept. Parking seems a bit overcrowded as you are mixed in with long term renters of other apartments, but they reserve a space in garage for this studio. For the seeker of solitude and isolation - bear in mind it is a shared house and has tenant above this studio and adjoining it. We had no problem with noise per se - but it is not fully isolated location. I'd say a very good value.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us, Paul. I am sorry for the additional people and therefore inevitable noise while you were there, given the adjacent tenants' big birthday party and their many visitors for that. Best wishes!

Just as described

  • 4 of 5

The pictures and info online describe this property accurately, except that the word "gorgeous" is perhaps a stretch. The owner got back with us very promptly when we had questions. This property scores for price, and convenience close to Hilo and to the main road (but out of earshot) on the east side of the island. We spent a week there and would go there again.

Gorgeously decorated, amazing yard!

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place to stay while working in Hilo for the summer. The studio looks out over a beautiful yard and has everything you would need for a short or long term stay. You get to fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest! Guy is very responsive and a wonderful host. Thanks for the great stay!
