Welcome to Highlands, North Carolina!
Nestled in one of the best locations in Highlands, Miss Rebecca's Cottage is secluded in town on one acre right next to the Sunset Rocks hiking area (a short walk to a beautiful overlook), across the street from Highlands Nature Center (with native plant gardens, museum, and lake), and one-third mile from Main Street's famous shopping and dining.
Newly renovated and decorated with family heirloom antiques, nice linens, and fine accessories, Miss Rebecca's is an historic cottage that was once an ice house which held blocks of ice from Harris Lake. It was also a caretaker's house, and an artist's studio belonging since 1918 to the family of Miss Rebecca Harris who owned Harvilla, the estate next door. The lush property is secluded from the quiet street but grassy and open around the house and the 24 windows let in lots of light.
The main part of the house has been opened into a great room with a wood-burning stone fireplace, full well-equipped kitchen, and a comfortable seating area with lots of windows. The living room/dining room and kitchen are a deep red with off-white trim and feature comfortable seating in rich plaids and florals with deep blues and forest greens.
The three bedrooms (two with queen-size beds and one with two twin beds) are a soft, restful peach with floral fabrics in subtle greens and blues with rose and peach accents. The furnishings, artwork, and accessories have been collected over a lifetime. Enjoy TV/VCR, WI-FI, telephone, CDs and tapes to play, radio, puzzles, games, books, and magazines.
With a total square footage of 1300 feet, it is cozy but open and suitable for either a family of six or equally appealing for a couple wanting a private, special occasion getaway. If additional bedrooms are needed, rooms may be taken at the owner's bed and breakfast, Colonial Pines Inn, half a mile away.
Highlands, at an elevation of 4118', offers a cool summer climate with an average high in July of 77 degrees and an average low of 57, and lots of live theater, music, and outdoor activities from which to choose. The fall colors of Leaf Season bring excitement and crowds, especially on weekends; but the quiet evergreen beauty of winter and the gentle unfolding of spring offer a time to enjoy Highlands at a slower pace. Shops and restaurants are open year round and there is a winter/spring theater season as well as summer.
There is no better place to experience the beauty and mystery of the mountains in any season, and there is no house in Highlands more personal, charming, and well located than Miss Rebecca's Cottage.

Miss Rebecca's Cottage: on Main St. Next to Sunset Rocks Trail
Year Purchased: 1993
Why the Owner Chose Highlands
Highlands is without a doubt, the classiest and most beautiful mountain town in Western NC. At an elevation of 4118', the average nighttime low in July is 57 degrees. In looking around to add an extra investment to our B&B, we found this lovely little house right in town not far from our Inn. Close enough for us to maintain meticulously, we are able to keep a close watch on it and we make sure it's always pristine and in shape for your visit. You will always be able to call us if you need anything and we will be right there, yet you have complete privacy on 2/3 acre right in town. In the past, we've owned other rental cottages in Highlands, but Miss Rebecca's Cottage is by far our favorite, and the others have now been sold so we can really concentrate on keeping Miss Rebecca's nice. Its location, size, appearance, and decor make a wonderful choice for a long or short stay in Highlands, and one day, when we sell the B&B, we plan to retire there. In the meantime, it's yours to enjoy!
The Unique Benefits at this House
Miss Rebecca's most outstanding feature is its location - private yet close to everything Highlands has to offer and best of all, you can park your car and walk. Neither too large nor too small, it can accommodate couples as well as families. From your front door, be sure to take the 15-min hike up Sunset Rocks for a gorgeous view of town, especially at Sunset (this hike can also be driven without 4-wheel drive for those not inclined to hike), and stroll across the street to the 5-acre nature preserve and lake at the Highlands Nature Center, run by University of NC. And check out the excellent summer nature classes for children and lectures for grown-ups. You'll find a Hiking & Water Fall Guide on your coffee table. The Library is 1/4 mile away, and the grocery store, churches, and shops are 1/3 mile. Walking is a popular activity in the safe environment of Highlands, and from Miss Rebecca's you can walk through several beautiful residental neighborhoods as well. Town is the place to be!
Easy 15-min hike right from your front door to expansive overlook down on Highlands. Can also be driven. Also a great secondary hike from the top to Sunrise Rocks with a great view of Whiteside Mtn.

Owner's Map of Highlands
We have a busy life in Highlands running our Bed and Breakfast, Colonial Pines Inn, which we've owned since 1984! We left our Atlanta careers in Interior Design and Installation, fell in love with the mountains, and moved without looking back. Daughters Meghan and Heather had an idyllic childhood here and both still love the mountains and all things outdoors. They have wonderful memories of large family gatherings at the Inn on special occasions, and growing up around the constant comings and goings of guests taught them many valuable lessons. Meghan is concierge at a Beaver Creek CO hotel (and is applying to law school), and Heather is a horticulturist at the Georgia State Botannical Garden. Our days are filled with cooking, cleaning, repairing, upgrading, advertising, entertaining, bookkeeping, shopping, and a myriad of other things that bed and breakfast owners do every day. It's a great life!

My husband and I have just returned from two weeks at Miss Rebecca's Cottage in the mountain town of Highland's, North Carolia. I never review our vacation accomodations, but this was so lovely I would like to share our experience. The location is perfect just next to Sunset Rock trail and across the street from The Nature Center--both a must when visiting the area--as well as an easy walk to town. The hosts were so kind and attentive as well as helpful answering all our questions about restaurants, plays, Chamber Music Festival, day trips, in short, just everything. The cottage is well supplied with everything you can imagine needing from a well appointed kitchen to plump towels and lovely family antiques all adding to the cozy, mountain atmosphere. The home sits on a large and private lot completely surrounded by trees and rhododendrun giving plenty of privacy for grilling out or just enjoying the cool air. We will certainly return and recommend it to friends and family. Thank you so much for a special home away from home. Some things you might like to try while in Highlands in the summer would include lunch at The Orchard in Cashiers, dinner at Lakeside Restaurant where I would recommend reservations. The Chamber Music Festival is just fabulous. There is a huge selection of classes to take at reasonable cost through CLE,and a wonderful selection of plays through the Highlands Playhouse. The Bascom Gallery has great regional art and lots of programs. We love hiking at Cliffside Lake and also Whiteside Mountain. There is also a great trail around the lake at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers which we can recommend. Highlands also has a very nice library which is being expanded; you may use their internet for free which is a huge help. They also have a super used book store called the Book Worm. I think this is enough for you to also enjoy two weeks at Miss Rebecca's! Diane, Destin, FL.
