The Penthouse Casa Don Tomas is located in Barrio Otoya, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of San Jose. Several former Presidents of Costa Rica and other public figures made Barrio Otoya their place of residence in the late 1900's.
Famous for its '60 architecture, Barrio Otoya together with Barrio Amon and Barrio Dent just a few blocks away are a sample of the San Jose of 50 years ago. The Penthouse of Casa Don Tomas dominates the highlands of San Jose Historical Center. Built in 1940, the house has been restored to its original beauty by his owner Don Tomas de la Ossa.
The Penthouse enjoys the serenity of its surroundings: The National Park on the South and the Simon Bolivar National Park on the West.
Surrounded by trees and tropical vegetation. It is gated, fully fenced and landscaped with abundant gardens with hundreds of flowers and thick grass lawn including a wide variety of tropical bougainvillea, amapolo, various palms, plumerias, and flowering tropical plants such as hibiscus, jasmine, heliconias, bromelias, tabacones and more.
Dozens of varieties of birds, multicolored butterflies, squirrels, and parakeets are just a few of the creatures you may see and hear right from your terrace. "it feels like you are out in the mountains when in reality you are just a few minutes away from downtown San Jose" commented a guest.
The Penthouse of Casa Don Tomas is located in a very safe and secure area. The house has a 24 hour security monitoring system. This three bedrooms, one large bathroom house accommodates comfortably 3 single guests or 3 couples. The master bedroom is furnished with a Queen size bed, the other two bedrooms with a double bed each. In order to maintain quality standards no more than three single guests or three couples will be allowed to register in the penthouse.
From Casa Don Tomas, you can easily walk to San Jose's main tourist attractions: The National Museum, The House of Congress, The Electoral College Building, The Foreign Relations Ministry, Democracy Square, The National Theater, Cultural Plaza, The Gold and Jade Museums and the Central Market. Fine restaurants, souvenir shops; fitness centers, movie houses and theaters.
Spanish students: The University of Costa Rica Campus, Costa Rica Language Academy (CRLA), Forester Language Institute and INTENSA Language Center are some of the learning institutions within walking distance of the Penthouse. Why the Owner Chose San Jose
When I returned to Costa Rica to live, I looked to buy a home near the neighborhood where I grew up in San Jose. I found this old and beautiful home in one of the most exclusive neighborhood in San Jose: Barrio Otoya a no more than five or six city blocks barrio, caught between Barrios Aranjuez y Amon. Over the years I have restored the house to its original look.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Its ideal location is perhaps the biggest asset of the Penthouse Casa Don Tomas, in the city but then again surrounded by the greenery of the Simon Bolivar National Park and the National Park that makes you forget you are but a few blocks away from the center of town. Tranquility, calmness, peace and serenity are the four words that best describes the apartment. Common visitors to the Penthouse grounds are: brown tail squirrels, wild parrots, many, many different types of birds and multi color butterflies. Easy access, within walking distance of everything. in San Jose. Privacy and security.

I was born in Costa Rica a few years back. At age 18 I left home and went to California, USA in pursuit of a better education. During the Vietnam War I joined the USMC and serve with the 1st Marines in Vietnam. Upon my return to the USA from overseas I attended California State University in Los Angeles where I studied International Relations. During the 32 years I lived in the Golden State I worked at different things among them play and sang with a Mariachi Band in a night club in Los Angeles, Was Director of Data Processing for a large Insurance group. Toward the end of my self-impose exile in the City of Angels I served as Comercial and Public Relations Attache for the Costa Rica Consulate in Los Angeles, as a Consul of Costa Rica in Los Angeles, and last as Costa Rica Director of Tourism for Western United States and Canada, before retiring to live back in Costa Rica.

I stayed four nights in early August and found Penthouse Casa Don Tomas just as described. Clean, quiet and comfortable. The location is excellent for accessing the downtown area of San Jose or as a base for excursions outside the city. There are several good restaurants within a reasonable distance, L' Ancora and Cafe Mundo just to name two that I enjoy. Even Mall San Pedro is only a 20 minute walk and taxis are everywhere and inexpensive. Don Tomas is a friendly guy and a congenial host. He will be as helpful as necessary or leave you to yourself, whichever you like. Thanks again Don Tomas, I will be back.

My family of 5 spent three nights at the Penthouse in May, 2011. We had an excellent time and found the apartment much to our liking. One of the things that amazed us was how incredibly quiet the neighborhood was despite the fact that it was only a a short distance to the center of San Jose. There are excellent restaurants within walking distance and it is very easy to catch a taxi just up the street from the Penthouse. The property was clean and tidy and Don Tomas is a gentleman and we felt well looked after during our time there. Recommended.

Beautiful home. The home is perfectly clean and close to restaurants and downtown San Jose. The home is located in a very quiet cul de sac and very quaint. Don Tomas and his wife were really wonderful and helpful assisting with travel arrangements and providing recommendations to sites/places around Costa Rica. Thanks a million Mr. Tomas.

I have stayed in San Jose a few times and let's just say I was not sad to leave the hotel room when it was time to go. My experience at Casa Don Tomas was quite the opposite! The condo is the perfect little slice of serenity. It has old world architecture and design and offers a truly authentic yet extremely nice Costa Rican experience. I already miss walking down the steps to the BEAUTIFUL courtyard to take in the gorgeous mornings filled with song birds, great coffee and beautiful vegetation. The location is KEY - it's a close walk to everything you need, but is tucked away in a quiet, safe neighborhood. I also had the pleasure of speaking with Don and he is a an absolute gentleman. I would highly recommend this place and stay there again in a heart beat!

this spot is ideal for just about anyone wanting to stay in an intimate, secluded feeling location right in downtown. we've been travelling to san jose, for a number of years and it seems we've found the location we'll be returning to, hopefully, every time from now on. the courtyard out back is completely isolated from the streets, with a well placed hot tub and beautiful landscaping. Tomas is a gentleman and a scholar, a true host with plenty of useful advice. the pad has a king bed and two double beds, with one restroom. the full kitchen is ideal if you just want to walk to the mercado and buy groceries to snack on. for the price it wouldn't be a bad location to set base at and travel to other spots around the country, leaving your check luggage at don tomas' and travelling light. i have nothing but good things to say about this location.

Tomas, I just wanted to say we had a great time at your place.. If you want to be in a city close to everything but feel like your in the comfort of a tropical hideaway, this is the place for you. The pictures really dont do this place justice, from the beautiful greenary to the hot tub, to the professional, friendly people involved to make you feel relaxed and really a home away from home feeling. Im from Bermuda where it is beautiful, but costa rica is a special country with great people and when i come back soon I will be staying at the casa don Tomas.. Tomas, We had a great time in San Jose, and an even better time at the beach. Thank you for all your hospitality (and for having the cleaning lady stop by on Saturday). You driver Romeo is an excellent driver and a credit to your staff. You should keep him around at any and all cost.
