The "This Old House Idea Home" at The Homestead in Chickamauga, GA is a beautiful and professionally designed idea home created jointly by the staff of This Old House and John Tatum of Atlanta and Nolan Designs of Chattanooga. The house sits at the head of a sweet little valley in the shadow of Lookout Mountain only 20 minutes from the heart of downtown Chattanooga.
A mountain-esque, craftsmen cottage, the home has a large wrap around porch and a steep roof that affords two floors plus a charming loft on the third level. The house is nestled in the shade of a ridge and is landscaped by designer Kate Karam of Monrovia.
The home was built to inspire how one can live large in a smaller home. With so many clever built-ins at every level, the house lives up to its reputation as an Idea Home.
A queen master suite is on the main, with another queen master suite on the second floor. The second floor also has a twin bunk bedroom and shares a full bath with the loft overhead that has two additional twins and a small play area. The loft is a kid's dream come true.
The details are abundant, from an extensively built-out mud room to large tapered stone columns crowned with triple caps of indigenous flagstones.
Located at The Homestead at Cloudland Station just outside of Chattanooga, it is the perfect home base for enjoying Chattanooga and all the local and regional sites. Uniquely situated, it has a backdoor entry into downtown Chattanooga only 20 minutes away. Moreover, located in the pastoral Chattanooga Valley, you are only 15 minutes to Cloudland Canyon State Park, notably one of the most beautiful state parks in the southeast, 15 minutes to Rock City and 15 minutes to Ruby Falls.

This home was bright, beautiful and more than inviting. There was so much thought put into the decor and arrangement of this home. There was something exciting around every corner. Our three children loved the space thoughtfully created for them. It was spotless and very cozy. We will definitely be back!
Another great stay
This was our second time staying in the "blue house" as our 4 year old calls it. The house is wonderful as is the surrounding Candlelight Forest. Highly recommend to anyone, especially those who enjoy the outdoors and/or have small children. Our only complaint was the smoke smell coming from the fireplace; not overpowering, but noticeable.
Wonderful mini vacation!
Loved our time here! Our daughter’s wedding was at Debarge Vineyards, perfect distance to venue, to shopping for last minute needs, food & to Chatt to keep busy in down time!
Quick response to questions by owner, just a wonderful, relaxing retreat! We WILL be back!!
The house and grounds were all the pictures detail. Fit our needs and then some.....
The house was beautiful and each room was neat to discover. The lakes and the creek were just a short walk and were enjoyed by our grands. A short trip to Chattanooga was a surprise. There is much to do if you get in your vehicle or if you chose to just sit and enjoy what God has provided in this beautiful area. We want to return!!!!! Angie was such a help and has such a wonderful home.....
Wonderful Christmas getaway
We has the best time, the home was beautiful. Angie knew we were doing our family Christmas, she made sure that the was a beautiful Christmas tree there. A beautiful tree next to a warm fire doesn't get much more Christmas than that. I can't say enough about how wonderful the home was. Everything was perfect, we loved it so much we want to come back in the summer to enjoy the lovely wraparound porch.
Charming and picturesque
We were staying for a wedding and didn’t have much time to enjoy it but the kids loved the treehouse and swing and bunk beds. So many picture taking possibilities ! The television was on the fritz in our visit but we didn’t have time to watch it anyway. Appreciated the detailed information as we had my elderly parents and our special needs child ( along with our two other kids) with us . Found a wasp but hubby killed it quickly Thanks for everything !
