Get away from the hectic affairs of daily life and relax on the bucolic west side of Lake Norman. The house is surrounded by 13 undeveloped acres with 198 feet of waterfront. Located mid-way up Lake Norman, the house is far enough away from Charlotte to be outside of suburbia, but close enough to civilization for convenient access to restaurants and shopping. The house has a good view across a very wide cove that is perfect for swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding. You have a choice of swimming from a protected beach or swimming off the dock in deep water. We have a canoe, kayaks, paddle board and small sailboat that are available for use by the renters free of charge. (Satisfactory evidence of sailing proficiency is required to use the sailboat.) We also have various indoor and outdoor games available for use, including various board games, Bocce, horseshoes, and Croquet. We also have fishing rods if you want to try your luck at catching dinner.
The house was completely renovated in 2015-2016 and a new screen porch was added in February 2018. There is a queen-sized (firm) bed in one bedroom and two (medium firmness) twin beds in the second bedroom. A side room has an additional twin bed (medium firmness) and there is fold out couch in the living room (the fold out bed is not recommended for adults). Because the fold-out couch is in the main room and only suitable for children, we do not recommend the house for groups with more than 5 adults and teens.
A washer and dryer are available for use in the utility room. If it gets cold, there is a wood-stove in additional to a heat pump system. Outside, there is a large dock with deep water and room for multiple boats. If you have a boat, it is most convenient to put the boat in at either the Lake Norman Hotel landing, the McCrary Creek access area, the Hager Creek access area or the Burton Creek access area.
The house is not large or fancy, but it is clean and comfortable. Although there is a great view from most of the rooms in the house, you will want to spend most of your time on the dock, on the screen porch or in the water. Early in the morning, as the mist is lifting from the lake, is great time to sit in the porch swing on the dock or one of the rockers and enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee. It is not uncommon to see deer, herons, turtles, muskrats, ducks, and geese. There is also a friendly catfish that will stick its nose out of the water and beg to be fed.
2017 was the first year that we rented the house so currently we do not have many reviews, but we will do our absolute best to try to make your experience a good one.

About Rick Gaskins
We've traveled the world, most recently living in France for a year and traveling to Alaska for two months, but our little house on Lake Norman remains one of our favorite places to get away from the hectic pressures of daily life.
Rick Gaskins purchased this Cottage in 1996
Why Rick Gaskins chose Lake Norman of Catawba
We bought this property because we wanted a place where we felt like we were outside of suburbia, but close enough to town that it would be easy to use the house for an evening or weekend. If you like to sail or boat, the house has easy access to big water and yet it is in a spot that does not have the noise and waves from boats speeding by close to the dock. The house was built about the same time that the lake was flooded, and it was completely renovated in 2015-2016. Although we updated the fixtures, we kept the simple design and the wood stove. If you want a simple clean quiet house with lots of space for outdoor activities, this is the place for you.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our little house on Lake Norman is the quintessential simple lake house. If you are looking for a place with a fancy hot tub and white carpeting, this is not the place. However, if you are looking for a place with lots of family games, a canoe, kayaks, paddle board and other water toys, where you don't have to worry about getting run over by speeding boats when you swim, this is the place for you. You can explore the lake by canoe or kayak, or just curl up on the dock porch swing and read a book. If you are hungry, throw out a fishing line and wait for dinner to come to you.

Great location very clean neat and accomodating
Owner very nice and accommodating .
Cabin is well appointed very clean and very convenient. We have stayed at several houses on lake Norman and this is highly recommended.
Week of bliss!!!
Owner was great, very warm and inviting!
Property was great with wonderful docking facilities. We brought our own 21 foot boat and there was easy mooring adjacent to the dock. Owner was Very generous with the use of his canoe, kayaks, and paddle board.
House was VERY clean and well kept with everything we could want available for our use.
Cozy, clean, and quiet getaway.
House was accurately represented in the VRBO description. The owner met us at the property and was very friendly and helpful. He gave us a detailed description of the house and the local area.
Great location for a short or long getaway. We were looking for a relaxing weekend to get away from the busyness of life, therefore we chose to stay at the property the entire weekend. We had plenty to do; fishing, kayaking, canoeing, camp fire, etc. House was very clean well equipped.
We would definitely stay again and highly recommend this property to others.
Clean and Relaxing
Stayed at the house for 5 days, with my wife and two teenage kids 15-16.
The owner Rick was very nice and accommodating.
The house seemed a little small from the outside but was perfect on the inside. Very clean with a well supplied laundry, bathroom and kitchen.
It took a little getting used to using the toaster oven in place of a regular toaster, but we managed.
The whole family enjoyed the covered boat dock, along with the stand up paddle board, kayak and canoe.
My son and I caught fish out of the canoe every time we took it out, using nightcrawlers. One really nice 28" catfish.
It was very relaxing sitting by the lake in the morning having coffee, and also in the evening as night was falling.
Thanks again to Rick for the use of the house.
Great stay in a great location.
This cottage was plenty big enough for my family of four. The living space was very open and each bedroom (2.5) had plenty of space for my family. The location on the lake was near perfect. Rick was a wonderful host and was there to greet us when we arrived. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and may have to make a return visit soon.
Book with confidence!
Rest and relaxation
We rented this to be on the lake for a few days to enjoy some rest and relaxation. Beautiful views. So peaceful. Got to enjoy fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming. Used the gas grill for hot dogs and built a fire in firepit to enjoy smores and pop corn each night. The owner was there when we checked to answer any questions and was easily accessible if needed.
Our lake house is located about 40 minutes from downtown Charlotte via either Hwy 16 (on the west side of Lake Norman) or I-77 (on the east side of Lake Norman). Exit 36 on I-77 (which is about 15 minutes away) has a variety of shopping options including Target, Walmart, Belks, sporting goods stores, and home improvement stores.
