About Ela Wehrmann
I was living in California when I took a summer break to be in Alaska. I spent the summer in Gustavus which is a ferry ride or short flight from Juneau. I fell in love with the vast majestic beauty of Alaska and decided to stay. I choose Juneau because it offered more emenities and yet all this wilderness to explore. I absolutely love it here. It is a magical place.
Why Ela Wehrmann chose Juneau
The view is spectacular. I love living near the water.

Ela and Jan have the perfect location for those looking for a balance of rugged, unspoiled beauty and a quick car ride to a charming city. The week we spent there recharged us like no other trip before. The wildlife and trails impressed us each day. The rental was perfect for two people. It was clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. And, their dog-Mel, is adorable. We have re-added this back on our bucket list and will stay with them again.
Luxurious private getaway!
In one word- luxurious!! Loved staying here, the pictures are not an exaggeration, it really is that nice. The views are gorgeous, kitchen thoughtfully well appointed, and the entire place comfortably furnished and impeccably decorated. The host had wonderful suggestions for local hikes, grocery stores, and restaurants. Truly a quiet get-away and a wonderful base to explore the Juneau region. Enjoyed walking on the small beach out front to duck island, and saw porpoises in the bay from the deck!
Our Juneau dream come true!
The Otter's Hideaway was all that was offered in the VRBO listing and so much more! We arrived around 5:30p and as we entered our get-away nest, we immediately heard eagle cries in the air! We set our bags down and went out to the fabulously appointed porch, to be rewarded with immediately spotting two adult bald eagles roosting on a nearby pier. Once we went back inside to look around, we were very impressed with the personal touch throughout every room. No bland turn-key unit here! We felt at home immediately, noting the pillows and soft blanket in the living room. In our bedroom, we discovered a delight in the bedding- I'd say it was either bamboo or cotton sheets, soft as you'd find at grandma's, topped with just-perfect down comforter and heavier quilt. In the closet were slippers in every adult size and two organic cotton robes. We loved them so much that we asked Ela for a link so that we could have them at home. Even the bathroom towels were thick and soft. The kitchen is fully appointed. Local coffee, a grinder and french press were left in a welcoming manner on the kitchen counter. I even found mini-moos in the refrigerator and sugar in the pantry. If you forget anything, Ela has you covered. She had everything in-house- from shower gel and shampoo, to q-tips, moisturizer, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bug spray, benadryl gel, sunscreen, coolers!! I could go on!! There are reading materials for all tastes, both television and internet. We found an entire notebook dedicated to local venues and restaurants. She had trail guides and park maps in ready view. And, if you don't see it there, ask her! She and her husband are both a wealth of information as long-term Juneau residents. From our little nest, we were able to walk to nearby Eagle recreation area, for a different view of the bay and surrounding mountains. We made use of low-tide and walked over to the nearby island. I have photos with 5+ bald eagles in one frame! From our porch, we were able to watch harbor seals and dall's porpoises feed in the bay. Oh! and visiting in summer? We had an average of 18 hours of daylight to fit all-the-more into our adventure! Our days started verrrryyyy early (with delicious coffee on the porch, wrapped in a snuggly soft blanket), and we enjoyed the dusky evening well past 10:45p Whether you enjoy the outdoors, hikes, excursions, awesome food at every location or a bit of shopping, you'll find it within minutes from Otter's Hideaway.
Dear Megan and Derrick, you were such a pleasure to have as guests. Your enthusiasm and wonder were a delight to behold. A inspiration. Megan your photos and your words are beautiful and rich. Thank you for this wonderful review.
Wonderful Spot for Juneau Stay
We were so happy to find this lovely place for our week in Juneau. The location was near to family, restaurants, the ferry, and the Mendenhall Visitor Center where we visited the bears, salmon and hiking trails frequently. We loved the peace and serenity of the place; watching the activity on/in the water, the movement of the clouds in sky, and rays of sun coming and going. The covered porch enabled us to be outside even in the rain and was equipped with a grill we used for a get-to-gether of family and friends. Inside, we had everything we needed to entertain as well as be comfortable and well supplied for just the 2 for us. We felt very much at home and wished we could have stayed longer. Maybe next time.
Very nice and private. Bed is amazing. Home is in beautiful private cove. We watched porpoises and seal in the cove each day. Handy to Ferry Terminal, Mendenhall, Shrine and hiking trails and beaches. Perfect for a couple. Homeowners nice and very helpful. Relaxing and comfortable. Would recommend

My husband and I had a wonderful two weeks at Otter's Hideaway. The view is beautiful. The rental is comfortable and how many rentals come with a large covered deck and fire pit on the beach? We could watch the Dall's porpoise and other ocean wildlife. We thought the location was great with hiking trails close by but away enough from the crowds. It is easy to get downtown and do all you want but to return to this lovely location. The amenities were nice and we loved the coffee. Thank you, Ela! Nancy and Phil
