About this property

Historic Abbey - Loire valley Hunting lodge and Cavalry court with heated pool

Tucked away in the Villandry forest, our historic property is a wonderful place for families and friends to enjoy time together in the Loire Valley. This former monastic site dates back to the 12th century and has been lovingly preserved, so you’ll feel the charm of the old stones and beams while enjoying modern comfort, fresh air, and quiet nature all around.

There are two houses on the property, close enough for everyone to gather easily yet with enough space for quiet naps or downtime. Together, they welcome up to 16 guests, making it perfect for big family holidays, reunions, birthdays, or trips with friends. Kids can splash in the heated pool, adults can relax with a barbecue under the trees, and everyone can enjoy long meals outdoors surrounded by forest.

Even though the buildings are historic, both houses have been fully renovated with:
contemporary bathrooms, comfortable bedding, and equipped kitchens, and
so you can enjoy authentic heritage without sacrificing comfort.

Although it feels peaceful and private, we’re not isolated: the property is reached by a 1 km driveway off a small country road, just 10 minutes from Azay-le-Rideau and 20 minutes from Tours. The nearest village, Saché (3 km), has everything you need for daily life and a bit of culture too: a bakery for warm croissants, a café, a Sunday market, a post office, and even a wonderful restaurant (Auberge du XIIᵉ Siècle). Saché is also famous as the home of the writer Balzac and the American sculptor Alexander Calder.
From here, families can easily explore the very best of the Loire Valley without long drives: the royal châteaux (Chenonceau, Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau, Ussé…), troglodyte cave houses, canoeing or fishing on the Loire and Indre rivers, family-friendly restaurants, and beautiful vineyards. Popular attractions like Clos Lucé (Leonardo da Vinci’s home), Mini-Châteaux Park, the Touraine Aquarium, and the Beauval Zoo are all less than 40 minutes away.
There’s truly something for everyone: pony and horse rides, golf, water-skiing, tennis, forest walks, or simply playing in the garden and soaking up the sunshine in a calm and safe setting.
Our main 17th-century farmhouse faces south and looks out toward a small 12th-century church. It’s full of character yet offers all the essentials families need for a great holiday. The second house, “Les Écuries,” sleeps 4 more guests and is ideal for grandparents, teens, or another family.
We’re proud to offer a place where kids have space to run and play, adults can relax, and everyone can make memories together in a beautiful and historical environment.

We are passionate about history, cultural heritage, and beautiful places that have a soul. We chose to invest in this ambitious project with a clear mission: to preserve it, restore it responsibly, and share it with visitors who value authenticity.
Our goal is not only to provide accommodation, but to protect a meaningful part of French heritage and make it accessible in a comfortable and welcoming setting. We care deeply about the property, the forest that surrounds it, and the cultural history it represents — and we love hosting travelers who share these values.

Why they chose this property

We chose the Loire Valley for its unique combination of history, culture, and natural beauty. This world-renowned region is home to majestic Renaissance châteaux, charming medieval villages, and historic abbeys, offering guests the chance to step into centuries of French heritage while surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

But the Loire Valley is not just about architecture and history. The Touraine region is a paradise for food and wine lovers, with lively local markets, gourmet restaurants, and celebrated vineyards. Guests can savor fine wines and artisanal cheeses, discover traditional French cuisine, and fully immerse themselves in the art de vivre à la française.

And yet, the area also offers moments of calm and serenity. From peaceful walks along the Indre riverbanks to quiet trails through forested paths, visitors can enjoy a perfect balance of culture, gastronomy, history, and nature.

What makes this property unique

What makes the estate truly unique is its ability to offer an authentic historical experience without compromising comfort. Guests stay on a private heritage domain, once connected to the most influential abbey in medieval France, where Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine are buried. And yet, inside the houses, everything has been carefully restored to provide:
• Modern bathrooms
• Comfortable beds
• Fully equipped kitchens
• Heating
• Reliable amenities
This allows guests to live within history, but not like it’s the 12th century.

For those who want to dive deeper, private historical tours of the estate can be arranged upon request, offering insight into its connections with Fontevraud, monastic life, and regional history.
