What to do in Beautiful Maggie Valley: Maggie Valley and the surrounding area truly has something for every member of the family. If hiking & nature are your favorite things, or if you are more interested in golf at one of the area courses, the cool temperatures and friendly natives will make your stay pleasurable. Several riding stables, including Queens Farm and Cataloochee offer trail rides daily. Skiing is minutes away in the early spring and fall at Cataloochee Ski Resort. Numerous rafting companies operate on the Nantahala River and several levels of excitement await the rafting enthusiasts. A word to the wise--the water here is from the mountains and it is notoriously chilly! The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad has scenic tours through the mountain passes boarding at the station in Dillsboro--check departure times and inquire about the sunset tours as well.

Asheville is a Must See!: A quick 30 minutes east on I-40 lies the town of Asheville, with it's charming old downtown section, dotted with quaint shops and delicious gourmet restaurants. If you are lucky, you'll be in town for the Southern Highland Craft Fair at the Asheville Civic Center and see the finest the area's crafters have to offer. In southern Asheville (Exit 50 on I-40) is Biltmore Village, home of the famous Biltmore Estate and Winery. If you have never been to Biltmore, it is a must see and a delightful way to spend the day on another continent. Like any large city, Asheville has a very nice mall and very nice traditional dining, but also beautiful gardens everywhere, and enchanting southern architecture at every turn. Probably what attracts us to Asheville the most are the great antiquing opportunities. Antique malls, barns and warehouses dot the city and we have great fun both window shopping and collecting. If you can, go see the beautiful old Grove Park Inn on Charlotte Street.

Heading to the West: The Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harrah's Casino are a 30 minute drive to the west on Route 19. On the other side of beautiful Smokey Mountain National Park, about a 1 1/2 hour drive, is Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and of course, Dollywood. Gatlinburg is known for it's unusual assortment of interesting shops, Ripley's Museum, and restaurants. Pigeon Forge has an amazing artisan community with many galleries and working studios. Pigeon Forge is also a haven for outlet shoppers, as well as home to the popular theme park Dollywood.

About the host

Host profile image
We are Mike and Janie Hinkle and although we live in Florida now, Mike was born and raised in Asheville. We bought Dogwood Creek in 1994 as a vacation getaway so that we could be close to Asheville, but have access to the slower pace of a small town like Maggie Valley. We have owned and operated a full service camera store, lab, and frame shop in Florida for over 30 years, and coming up to Dogwood Creek is the perfect escape from work, even though we do keep in touch now that we finally have wifi and decent cell service!

Why they chose this property

This house was perfect for us and our two girls. It was close to everything in the valley, had plenty of room for guests, cook-outs, and hiking trips, and a stream running across the bottom of the property--my favorite sound! We have come back several times a year since then, sometimes by ourselves, and sometimes dragging friends to share in the cool days and nights that North Carolina has to offer. It's not difficult to find people that want to escape Florida in the summer! In 2023 we added air conditioning to our list of creature comforts.

What makes this property unique

Dogwood Creek has a multitude of unique benefits. It has excellent proximity to town, a very private feel nestled in the trees, but still has very easy access on paved roads. The three levels of the house make it a natural choice for families, giving ample space for individual activities within the house. The bunk room is perfect for kids and teens and features a private bath. The guest room on the main floor is great for grandparents who don't want to make the extra climb to the third floor and is close to the kitchen and living areas as well. The upstairs master bedroom offers privacy with a private bath and walk-in closet as well. The loft off the master bedroom is a great place to nap or read any time of the day. One of our favorite features are the porches on the first two levels. The bottom porch is home to the hot tub, while the second floor porch features everyone's favorite two-seater swing, as well as porch rockers and, of course, the gas grill. Overlooking the woods and the creek, the back porches are the most popular places we've found to relax at Dogwood Creek.
