The area has much historic significance – close by is Gun Hill, where Cromwell is believed to have located his canon aimed at the town of Leek. On the edge above Swythamley there is a famous landmark - the Hanging Stone, with a fine view over the surrounding countryside. There is fine walking and climbing on The Roaches, and many lovely cycle trails in the area. Alton Towers, Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within easy reach.
