About Laura Johnson

We are a couple of writers who love nature and Nicaragua. We fell in love with Balcones and Casa La Serena for its unique architecture and the feeling of being in our own private paradise.

We live in Los Angeles but travel to Nicaragua frequently.

Laura Johnson purchased this villa in 2007

Why Laura Johnson chose Nicaragua

We fell in love with the house and the access to several of the most amazing beaches in the area.

What makes this villa unique

Casa La Serena is an oasis, a place of quiet and lush beauty. It is open to the sea breeze and built in such a way that one can have both privacy and community. The bathrooms are beautifully made with unique features and the entire house is a showcase for the magnificence of Nicaraguan wood. Balconies open to the dazzling ocean view, a pool to watch the sunset from are some of the joys this house has to offer.

Overall Disappointment

  • 1 of 5

The house was not as bright and cheerful as the pictures portrayed. The pool area was devoid of any color, no plants, just sterile concrete, and the pool itself needed a new coat of paint - it was less than inviting. Tropical flowering plants around the pool would have done wonders. Some doors on the different rooms locked and others did not so being 2 women alone in the middle of nowhere we decided to sleep in the same room, defeating the purpose of renting a place with 2 suites. Shayla at Remax in SJDS took us out to the property and was in contact for the first day then disappeared completely. We were waiting for her to make arrangements for us to visit Morgan's Rock for the day. We waited and waited and emailed and called her multiple times with zero response. We were so disappointed in the service that we packed up and left Casa Serena early and stayed elsewhere. We emailed Shayla that we were leaving and she did not inquire or follow up as to why we were leaving though she had our email and our phone number which we were using in country. We can only assume it's because she was aware that she had completely blown us off. Thankfully, our stay elsewhere was so fabulous that it made up for the loss of money spent on Casa Serena. The house has potential but the service and feel of the house needs some work, along with the development as a whole which feels abandoned and a bit run down. I'm sorry to say we would definitely not return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. In an effort to always improve our service to guests based on some of the suggestions in your review. The lock has since been fixed, and the objects that warm the space up (plants etc) have been places back on the patio now that windy season has passed and they no longer are projectiles- (we had the worst windy season in our rental history and due to the damage and destruction the winds were causing had all possible projectiles removed from the pool area) What we have also learned from thus review is that our instances on our guests having their own transportation is critical. We allowed you and your guest to stay with out one due to your previous travel to Nicaragua and and your insistence that it was not required. We feel this affected your stay and led to your feeling of isolation and will insist on this for future guests. You would not have been able to access Morgan's Rock without your own transportation While we apologize for the lack of response to your emails by Shayla- an email was not sent to the booking agent despite clear instructions to contact her for this activity. We appreciate you taking the time to write this and as always will continue to work to provide our guests with the best experience possible in San Juan del Sur

The Great Escape!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Casa La Serena was a true escape and complete juxstaposition from the energy that came from SJDS. The support from Gabby, Laura and Shayla coudln't have been more helpful, from answering our pre visit questions, to taking us for a tour of San Juan, to helping us get familar with the lay of the land. If you plan on staying at Balcones for a few days be sure to stock up bc the drive back to town can take time away from your planned R&R. If you enjoy fresh seafood be sure to pick up some from fish/shrimp/lobster etc from the fish market at the pier in town.

At Casa La Serena you will be immersed in the sound of slience so be prepared to slow down, shift into neutral and enjoy alot of R&R. The howler monkeys will remind every morning not to sleep in too late and that as much as you may think you are alone you aren't. There is a little establishment called Matildas on the beach near by where you can purchase some cold refreshments and a freshly prepared lunch if you need to recharge, or just enjoy sun and sand (Dont expect a 5 star restaurant, but a true Nicaraguan experience!!) If you want to spoil yourselves even more than you have up to this point ask about purchasing a day pass to Morgans Rock. They have a great restaurant, infiniti pool overlooking the ocean, we had the beach to ourselves (although most beaches in Nica are often like that) They have handfull of tours you can book so check out what they have to offer.

There wasnt much to complain about, all in all you cant control the nature that will surround you on your stay but isnt that why you are booking this place?!! to immerse yourself into a suspended state of relaxtion and to be one with nature!! (don't panic the scorpions aren't lethal)....In the end enjoy relaxing in the infinti pool with a cold Tona as you watch the Sun Set over the ocean..what more can you ask for...

Wonderful Place to hang your hat!!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay during the month of November. I wish I had more time to write a more thorough review, but I'm back at work and missing Casa La Serena. Staff was great, house was great, and Town was Great.

This is an INCREDIBLE getaway - beyond expectations

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved this house, property and location. It's incredibly decadent yet rustic at the same time. The view from the pool and bedrooms is ridiculous and so are the sunsets every night. We loved the "nature" feel of the place with howler monkeys waking you up sometimes in the middle of the night, birds making all kinds of cool noises and ocean breezes coming right through the screened bedroom "walls" -- nothing like it. We were surprised there weren't more bugs - we didn't see a single mosquito. We did, however, see and kill (sorry) a scorpion! We had lots of possums visiting as well. The walk to the beach is super easy and we hiked up two or three beaches north which were quiet and beautiful (the beaches south are more crowded and not as pretty). The kitchen has everything you need, and the bedrooms & bathrooms are sooooo funky, gorgeous and earthy all at the same time. Gabby was also first rate helping us get food and sharing her local knowledge. We'd come back in a heartbeat!

Best Vacation, EVER!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot recommend this rental property enough. Our experience was absolutely amazing. My husband and I rented this house for 10 days for our honeymoon. Laura, Gabby and Shayla were fabulous with answering all of my (many) questions so that we knew what to expect upon our arrival to Nicaragua.

We rented a private, round trip, shuttle through Iskra Travel from Managua to San Juan Del Sur. They dropped us off at Dollar Rental where we rented our extremely nice truck for the week. Then we headed to the office to meet Shayla. She showed us around town and took us to the fish market, specialty market and Pali grocery store. Shayla then drove us out to the property and told us everything we needed to know about the property and the town. The fish market is exceptional and you can buy fresh Dorado for $3/lb, amazing! We are so grateful for Shayla and her tour, as we would have been lost without her.

We ended up cooking most nights because there aren't many good reasons to leave the house. The house is gorgeous with a spectacular view. The house was clean, comfortable and just as pictured on VRBO. There were people who came to clean the pool daily and maintain the plants. We only asked to have the house cleaned once because anything more seemed unnecessary. The house is about a 4 minute drive from the beach and we suggest driving it because it is so much easier, especially with chairs and a surf board! The beach is gorgeous with almost no one on it (doesn't get much better than that). Lunch at Juanita's Kitchen was delicious as was the taco place on Maderas. We did the catamaran sale with Nica Surf and Sail and had a BLAST. We also hired a fishing charter through Hotel Gran Oceano and would highly recommend them. We caught 6 tuna and made fresh ceviche for supper that night. We thoroughly enjoyed having cocktails in the pool and watching the sun set.

I want to stress how safe we felt during our trip. We only stayed in town past dark once so we really weren't pushing it. But I read lots of things about how "unsafe" Nicaragua is, etc. and it made me nervous about our trip. We felt totally opposite, safe.

Overall, again, I cannot say enough wonderful things about our trip. If you are even half way on the fence about going, DO IT! This is the only trip I have ever taken where I have genuinely missed it since returning home. AMAZING!

Everything you could want and more...

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful scenery, relaxing atmosphere, a sparkling pool and a show from the howler monkeys were the highlights of our stay at Casa la Serena. We rented a 4 x 4 for the week and enjoyed the adventure of trips into town and visits to some outstanding beaches. Gabriela gave us a tour around SJDS which helped us immensely is locating the services we required. The home was well equipped and the staff were friendly and respectful. I would definitely recommend this location for anyone looking for some R & R with a twist of out of the ordinary.
