Hershey, Gettysburg, and the Dutch Country are at your fingertips, yet you'll enter your own private retreat in this comfortable home on a large corner lot with majestic oak, maple and dogwood trees in a peaceful neighborhood. You will be conveniently located to all the attractions of central Pennsylvania with Hershey thirty minutes to the east, Gettysburg 30 minutes to the west, and the Amish Country 45 minutes south of us. Ski Roundtop is a short nine miles from the house. There is easy access to PA and Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. You couldn’t find a better location for vacationing in our area in any season!
One outstanding feature is the spacious, privacy-fenced back yard with a large 16’ by 36’ in-ground pool with two fountains, a screened gazebo with dining table, ceiling fans, and lighting, plus a convenient pool house with an outdoor kitchen and a bath with a luxurious oversized tile shower. One extra nice feature is the large poolside deck, not often found in vacation rental homes. The pool opens in April, and it should be comfortable for swimming within a few weeks as our passive solar heat expedites the warming of the water. Until then, enjoy the relaxing sound of the fountains as you lounge by the pool and make s'mores in the chiminea. (Those daring enough to take a dip in early April are welcome to do so - it's been done many times!) The pool closes on October 1.
The 5+ bedroom home features a first floor, fully equipped tile kitchen with breakfast nook and GE Profile stainless steel appliances, including convection double oven, dishwasher, convection microwave, and large refrigerator with water and ice in the door. There is also a second full-size refrigerator in the three season outdoor kitchen so you never run out of refrigerator space.
Also on the first floor is the Southwest bedroom with a queen bed and direct access to a half bath (we call it the Palm room!) The bath can also be accessed from the foyer so that it can be shared.
The first floor L-shaped living/dining area has leather dining chairs and comfortable leather couch and chairs for viewing the Sony flatscreen HDTV. There's even an old Waltz family piano so that the kids can keep up with piano practice. (Sorry, kids!)
The second floor includes:
1. Master bedroom with a queen size bed, a desk, and a leather chair for viewing the 60' LED TV with sound bar.
2. Second bedroom with a queen bed,
3. Third bedroom with a double bed, a twin bed and a futon that can be used as a bed. It's as large as the master bedroom.
4. Optional bonus bath and bonus bedroom with queen bed. There is an extra fee for this addition, and it is required for groups with over 12 people including children. (The bonus bath is access through the third upstairs bedroom, and you go through the bonus bath to reach the bonus bedroom.)
In the basement, you'll find the large den/fifth bedroom combination with a queen size bed, leather couch and love seat, and a Pioneer Elite extra large flat screen HDTV and sound system. There is a half bath on this level. In addition, you’ll find a convenient laundry room with washer and dryer in another section of the basement, and we supply all the laundry products. Laundry chutes on the first and second floors send all the dirty laundry directly to the basement laundry room. You can play air hockey with the kids while the laundry is drying!
We mostly book through HomeAway or VRBO (or other affiliated websites) because it’s very safe and secure for our guests. Payment is either by credit card or e-check (electronic bank transfer.) If you choose credit, HomeAway charges a 3% fee, which is deducted from your security deposit refund. E-check is free. Due to insurance regulations, we rent only to those over the age of 25. For smokers, we ask that you smoke outside only and properly dispose of cigarette butts.
Cancellation policy - if guests have to cancel, we will do our best to re-rent the dates at the same rate. If we are successful, we refund your payment in full. If not, we do not refund. We recommend that our guests consider travel insurance.
If you’re looking for good local eateries close to the house, walk to Deiner’s on Main Street for breakfast. It’s decorated with memorabilia from the local high school and a number of students work there. If you’re hungry for bagels, Ressler’s Bagels and Deli will hit the spot, a very short drive from the house. They were rated a perfect “10”, the best bagels in all of central Pennsylvania. Juice ‘N Java, in Windsor Park Shopping Center, five minutes from the house, is a great coffee shop with gourmet sandwiches, etc., free Wi-Fi and laptops provided. We enjoy the fabulous gyros, lamb dishes, chargrilled souvlaki, just everything at Hellenic Kouzina, a family run Greek restaurant with parents and sometimes all nine children pitching in. If you like, you can eat in the courtyard with stone fountain and hanging lights. All of the above restaurants are within five minutes or less from the house by car, and our area has lots of the major chain restaurants as well. There are two Giant Supermarkets within a five minute drive, and the upscale Wegman's Groceries with a gourmet selections of cheese, a Mediterranean bar, craft beer, great sushi, and an expansive hot and cold food bar with dining area is a short drive from the home.
If you discover that this home is already rented for the dates you need, please check out our other vacation rental property in this area. It is a beautiful riverfront home directly on the Susquehanna River with fabulous views, a private dock, kayaks and inner tubes, and a fire pit to roast marshmallows by the river. You can see this property at HomeAway.com listing # 213580.

My husband, two children, and I have lived in Mechanicsburg, an historic village just across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, PA, for 28 years. For a number of those years, we lived in this home, where our children walked to the local schools, and Dave and I volunteered in numerous capacities in the community. Our children are now grown and live out of state, and Dave and I spend much of our time at our river cottage just about a 30 minute drive from the house. I enjoy gardening, and often I will be the person stopping by to water the flowers and potted palms and check on the pool during your stay. We will do our best to give you outstanding service because we truly consider you our 'guests' in every sense of the word. Dave is the executive director of a statewide organization, and I am a professor at our local community college. In a few years, we look forward to retiring, when we plan to spend spring, summer and fall in Pennsylvania and winters traveling or visiting grandchildren (when they arrive!)
Janice purchased this House in 2000
Why Janice chose Mechanicsburg
We chose this property to live and raise our children because it is a safe area with good schools and convenient access to shopping and cultural attractions. We have easy access to major Interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With our son and daughter entering their teen years at the time, we also wanted a home that would be a 'teen magnet' to draw our children and their friends to our home to hang out. With the pool, outdoor kitchen and bath, and other outdoor amenities, as well as the layout of the house which is great for entertaining, our house became the home base for the track team, sleep overs, and pre-prom dinners poolside. The home was a favorite of the church youth group, and we enjoyed hosting cookouts and family reunions there as well. For the same reasons, we know our guests will find this home a wonderful base for a vacation in central Pennsylvania. The only 'drawback' you'll find is that you won't want to leave the house!

Perfect fit for our families ... great for entertaining
Excellent experience ... responsive, caring owner. Thank-you!
Well appointed and maintained
We were here during the Artic freeze and had no interest in the closed pool or outdoor area. Inside we were toasty warm. No shortage of anything we required
All eleven of us enjoyed ourselves very much. We look forward to staying again.
Perfect for large family or friend gathering
Just a wonderful charming home. Lots of cool little features like the milk window, laundry Shute. My children had so much fun finding all the quirky things they’ve never seen before! The owners were very communicative and helpful. Their home was obviously built with love as you could feel it in every nook and cranny. Did I mention the beds. Omg the beds were so comfortable; the pillows, I must find out the manufacturer. Seriously, better than the heavenly bed. Perfect place to House my family for our wedding. Now I want to come back and just enjoy the sites around. Thank you both so much for your hospitality, and for making it truly a home away from home.
We were are a group of 4 couples. Everything was as stated. No surprises. Dave and Janice were wonderful hosts. They were there to meet us and answer any questions. The home is well equipped, comfortable and clean. We found everything we needed plus more. Loved the pool and the Gazebo. Ate most of our meals in the Gazebo or by the pool. Loved the neighbor Karl. If we ever travel back that way would defiantly stay there again. Thanks again Janice and Dave for being such great hosts. You have a lovely home.
Well equipped and very well maintained property. Extremely comfortable.
Nine golfers stayed in this wonderful home for a long weekend. Janice and Dave met us and provided a tour of the property. They were extremely helpful and welcoming. The property contained all the amenities required to make our stay comfortable and fun. Our only recommendation was to convert a couple of the queen size beds into doubles to better accommodate a male only group of golfers. We would definitely recommend this property for anyone considering visiting the area.
The village of Mechanicsburg is 30 minutes from the Gettysburg battlefield and visitor center, less than 30 minutes from Hershey Park, 45 minutes from Lancaster County's Amish Country. These are all in different directions, so we are very centrally located. There is also a Civil War museum in Harrisburg, just across the river. Mechanicsburg got its name because that's where all the covered wagons stopped to be repaired and worked on after they crossed the Susquehanna River heading west. It has the distinction of being the point of northernmost penetration of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Other area attractions include Indian Echo Caverns, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park (fabulous for children!), Dutch Wonderland, IMAX theater and Harsco Science Center, and outstanding outlet shopping in Lancaster, Gettysburg, and Hershey. Enjoy the Appalachian Trail and other great wilderness hiking/biking trails, fishing, kayaking and tubing on the Susquehanna River and Yellow Breeches Creek minutes away.
