Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms + Lofts (Sleeps 4), 2 Bath House on 40 Acres in Escalante Canyon

Cross Creek Ranch (the property) is part of a 160 acre private in holding in the heart of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, seated halfway between Bryce Canyon National Park and Capitol Reef National Park. Located where Scenic Highway 12 ('The Golden Loop') crosses the Escalante River, it is the hiking trail head to the renowned Escalante Canyons. The main home and guest house (see vrbo 652481) are the only structures on the last 40 acres downriver before 75 miles of wilderness area that runs all the way to Lake Powell.

This getaway is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath river front home tucked in between large cottonwood shade trees with views on all sides of the Escalante Canyon, meadows, cliffs, and river. The 1300 sq. ft. house sits in a lush riparian oasis surrounded by 600 ft. sandstone cliffs. Hike from the front door to first class scenic wonders.

The 16x28 ft. great room has 15 ft. cathedral ceilings with a massive stone fireplace and a 4x16 ft. built-in window seat. Magnificent views can be seen from the fully equipped kitchen with concrete counter tops, cherry wood cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. The master bedroom with a king bed has a glass wall view of a 200 ft. slick rock pour off, and a glass mosaic tile shower. Beautiful canyon and meadow views can be seen from the second bedroom (queen bed) as well as the spacious 8x30 ft. deck. The home has excellent wi-fi and no TV. A high clearance vehicle is preferable for the concreted low-water river crossing (generally 1 ft. deep).

The $275 per night rate is based on 2 persons.

About Katie Howland 2

About the owners Doug, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug is a 35-year designer/builder who built this beautiful home. His youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. They built the house over a 7-year period in the late 90’s, commuting 7 hours each way from their home in Arizona. Doug now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona and on the North Shore of Kauai.

Katie Howland 2 purchased this house in 1993

Why Katie Howland 2 chose Boulder

Doug came across this property in the early '90s. He fell in love with it not only for its beauty, but also because it is both accessible and secluded with the Escalante River flowing through it.

What makes this house unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door and within an hour's drive (see above). Look for deer and wild turkey in the meadow in the mornings and evenings and watch the cloud shadows change over the canyon walls. Head up or down the canyon into rugged wilderness, and return home to comfort.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a joy it was to stay in your fabulous home in the middle of a glorious spot away, literally, from it all.

Richard and our non-children (James 28 and Chris 30) enjoyed days of hiking, while I enjoyed days in glorious solitude reading and working on music. Everything was perfect!

Beautiful and tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights at the Escalante Canyon Home. The house was tucked in some cottonwoods with views of the canyon walls and afforded wonderful solitude and quiet. The house was also well located - we enjoyed hikes out the front door up Phipps Wash and to Bowington Arch and the proximity of other trailheads (e.g., lower Calf Creek Falls, The Gulch, and trails off of Hole in the Rock Road). The house was well appointed and maintained. Moreover, the owners were responsive and ensured that our stay was a very special one. I highly recommend this property!

Great house, great location.

  • 5 of 5

We happily relaxed here each evening after our excursions to nearby Calf Creek and Hole in the Rock Road and the Burr Trail. The house fittings are solid, the beds comfortable and the colors outside from the red rock and the trees and grasses are gorgeous, especially to wake up to. I should also mention the pleasant and prompt communication with the owner. Pix of the house setting: tinyurl dot com/y7pevnfk

Excellent!!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a long weekend as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 "tween-age" kids) at this PERFECT home and location. The home was just as described and as magical as all of the reviews suggest.

We enjoyed hitting the hiking trails by sunrise and returning to the house in the afternoon so the kids could scramble on the red rock in the backyard while we sat on the porch watching them and relaxing with a glass of wine. Kitchen was very well stocked and we cooked dinner each night at the house (brought our own food, as there is not a large grocery nearby). In the evenings, we enjoyed fires in the fireplace and appreciated the firewood stocked by the hearth.

The owner provided lots of helpful information before our visit, and the house had a large collection of trail maps that made planning each day easier.

We had little if any cell service at the house, but there was excellent Wi-Fi. Close to great hikes and about 20 min drive to the town of Escalante.

We hope to return again in the future and would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quite, cozy, private respite in a beautiful, and less-frequented part of Southern Utah than the national parks.

Idyllic and wild

  • 5 of 5

Second time there. Couldn't be better in terms of location--both immediate surroundings and access to many good day hikes in some of the most amazing country in the U.S. Gracious and efficient hosts. Positive experience all around.

Gorgeous and secluded!

  • 5 of 5

Retreat in Escalante was a retreat! Great space, privacy, comfortable furniture and bed. Awesome bed linens. Clean. Minimal clutter. Fully equipped kitchen. All soaps ( kitchen, bath and laundry). Great fireplace with wood. Washer and dryer.

Kiva coffee has divine espresso.

Probably better to have initial arrival in daylight hours due to the remoteness of the house, river crossing. Attention getting st 10:00pm but doable.

Beautiful house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful house is located in the Escalante River valley midway between the towns of Escalante and Boulder. It's a remote area but the Kiva Koffeehouse is very close. One should note you do drive through the river on a concrete pad to get to the house. The water was only 3-4 inches deep while we were there but you should pay attention to the weather and park your car on the other side of the river if necessary. The property is gorgeous and one of the owners lives next door. He was a really nice guy. His daughter manages the property from another location and was a pleasure to deal with. The Master Bedroom is great. There is an additional ground floor bedroom as well. The loft beds require climbing a ladder. The deck has a great view and it's possible to do a variety of hikes right from the house. This house doesn't come cheap but if you've got the bucks you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer spot to rent anywhere along Hwy.12 or the wider area. Find the trail that leads to the top of the cliff behind the house for beautiful lighting of the rocks and trees as the sun sets.
