In the heart of Colonia San Antonio, at the end of Calle Orizaba
you will discover La Fortuna; it offers a tranquil and organic environment with sunset and town views, ideally located just a 15 minute stroll to the Jardin, the heart and soul of San Miguel.
Built using traditional designs and techniques, Casa Fortuna encompasses over 2000 square feet of stone work, boveda ceilings, a cupula in the centre of the home and Sautillo tiles in a herringbone pattern. The spectacular rooftop deck is over 500 square feet of uninterrupted views in all directions.
The two ensuite bathrooms are masterpieces of tile and stone work with all of the modern conveniences. This warm and welcoming home will provide all the amenities and comforts to make your stay in San Miguel a most memorable and cherished time. Our home will be your home.
Casa Fortuna is near the end of a quiet dead-end street with very little traffic. The house is surrounded by mission style walls and is fully secure. Taking advantage of the copious sunshine, the house is now powered by solar electricity.

Lorne Tyczenski purchased this house in 2009
Our house is located at the top of Orizaba in colonia San Antonio. It set on the top of a ridge with commanding views in all directions.
This spacious and beautifully decorated home was very clean and comfortable. The rooftop terrace is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the views of the city and surrounding areas. There are small grocers and good restaurants right outside the gates, and the town centre is just a short walk from the house. After each day of activities in San Miguel, we always looked forward to coming back to the comforts of the house. We have already started planning our return trip to Casa Fortuna!
I always wondered what it would be like to actually live (if only for one week in our case) in a home out of the pages of Architectural Digest. NOW I KNOW...fabu!!
Having been through a few remodels myself, I can only imagine the headaches that must have come with ALL of the design decisions made in creating the perfect home base environment to enjoy a stay in San Antonio, San Miguel de Allende.
The amenities are, to understate, too many to enumerate but, suffice to say, everything you need to accomplish on your visit...you WILL be able to!
Casa Fortuna is positioned in a residential area outside the central zone and is a healthy hike or a short AND cheeeeep taxi ride away from shopping, restaurants and all attractions.
We are told that SMA is usually a fairly sleepy little town made even milder by the super laid back attitudes of the locals. We arrived on Christmas Eve eve and stayed until New Years Day...& honestly it was bedlam (in a pretty good way, I guess) although, it might be nice to return when it's not such a celebration. Really, people came into town from ALL over, and it was basically mobbed...Times Square in NYC has nuthin' on this place during a holiday week!!! Casa Fortuna is on the edge of a very active community in San Antonio...people out at all hours (except mornings), dogs barking through the night, roosters crowing at dawn through mid-morning, fireworks, parties, loud bangs (???) proliferated while we were there. Luckily, we brought earplugs and used them!
Norma & Lupe were just great...going above & beyond. Norma even arranged to have the rooftop terrace fireplace working a couple of days before departure and we REALLY enjoyed it up there. In December you need a fire to take the chill off the morning and evening temps which are coolish.
Totally in the spirit of aiming for perfection we aren't fans of the solar water heating system. We could operate it well enough on our end, but it's hardly efficient from a user standpoint. It takes 3-5 minutes to actually get hot water out of the shower, wasting a LOT of precious Mexican filtered water. The pressure isn't great but passable AND, the lovely bathtubs are clearly for show ONLY. With no hot tub on the amenities list when we booked, I was deliriously happy to see two big soaking tubs for my daily, lengthy bath with book & wine. Soooo sad when it became obvious that baths were not on the agenda due to extremely slow water flow & non-working drain plugs.
A memorable stay.
Its a perfect setting for a perfect holiday !!!
So well equipped and has everything one needs to enjoy one's stay
We stayed at Casa Fortuna, two friends, in mid-November for a week. I don’t know how to begin to describe this gorgeous property. Personally, I’ve never stayed anywhere I loved more. Right out of Architectural Digest. Every detail is a joy. I am a gardener, and the front garden, the rooftop garden, and the balcony off of my bedroom were exquisite. It was as if every tendril of every vine had been hand-placed, and was in bloom. Obviously, the owners are exceptional gardeners.
The rooftop, and the view from the rooftop was amazing. I had to keep pinching myself. I must have spent several hours taking pictures of the house, gardens and the views.
The house is VERY well equipped. Everything you might need and then some. For instance, in addition to the drip coffee maker there is a combo espresso grinder/maker and a hand juicer to make fresh squeezed orange juice or lime juice for your margaritas. There are two gorgeous bedrooms with beautiful baths. Ladies, there was even a makeup mirror in my bathroom (presumably my friend’s as well). My room had a walk-in closet that had drawers, cubbies, extra linens etc. and a safe for extra cash and your passports. There was a TV and Skype phone (which we never used--too much to do) on the second floor landing next to the Boveda ceiling. The gas fireplace in the downstairs living room was gorgeous & plenty to warm up the house; we were never cold. And when the sun came out and we saw the amazingly blue sky of San Miguel, it was magic. Colors just popped. It's a photographer’s dream.
Casa Fortuna is on a private courtyard along with 3 other lovely homes. On our first night we were invited to a party at the house of one of the neighbors on the other end, and it was so much fun! Such interesting people! There is a lovely community outdoor sitting area where neighbors often congregated with their morning coffee. But you had all the privacy you could want.
It’s about a 20 min walk to Centro along Calle Orizaba, but the bus goes by for only 5 pesos, and a taxi to just about anywhere is 40-50 pesos ($2-2.50 USD) and double that if you call for pick up, though we did that once and were only charged 50 pesos.
The water in Casa Fortuna is all potable; there is bottled water as well. We had a small party one evening: there is ample dinnerware, serving and cooking utensils. Beautiful Mexican pottery. Guides books and tourist info. A full laundry. I'm out of review space! We highly recommend Casa Fortuna!
We've been world travelers for several years, and have stayed in many types of accommodations- this was the best we've ever experienced! The home was absolutely beautiful, furnishings, architecture, flowers, hummingbirds, etc. We were greeted by Norma, who was thorough in explaining what we needed and was easy to reach in case we had any questions. Lupe, who kept the home beautifully clean, was a delight to meet and talk to. For every day/night of our 3 week stay, we never took the views from the terrace for granted. The lighting throughout the day, the hummingbirds (we made fresh nectar and replenished often- please do the same:), butterflies, rainbows, fireworks, and stunning city and countryside vistas were unforgettable. The location of the place was an easy, inexpensive cab ride to the centro, or just a simple 15-20 minute walk. We felt safe and greeted by neighbors, and also loved the friendly women at the corner store. We loved the fact that we could choose to eat out, cook at home, or order carry-out ...with wine!
If I had any suggestions at all- maybe screens so you could enjoy the cool evening breeze in the house (we figured out the first night that the mosquitoes LOVED us), and maybe handrails for the stairs. The floor-lighting was great, though.
Overall, I would highly recommend this place to any friend or family member, although I don't want it to fill up when I look to return! Casa Fortuna really is a little slice of heaven!
The owners were very attentive to our needs and even brought us papayas! The home has many beautiful architectural features. The home is well stocked. We loved the rooftop.
Casa Fortuna was more than we ever imagined. A hidden gem. Attention to detail is evident as this Casa felt like it was home from the minute we arrived. If I could have stayed forever, I would have done so.
