Secluded House with Dock on Marsh

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Mace House is a beautiful family home in a quiet, secluded neighborhood, on the mainland side of the tidal creek at Pawley's, where moss hangs from live oaks and deer stroll in the evening. Located on the mainland across the marsh from the south end of the island, this house has a private dock on the frontage along the marsh and is still owned by the family that built it in 1972.

A large screened porch with hammock, swing, and rocking chairs overlooks the tidal marsh where the private dock gives access for crabbing, fishing, kayaking, and watching birds - egrets, herons, and osprey in the marsh and painted buntings and whippoorwills in the woods. Glass doors across the main room let you enjoy the glorious views in the comfort of AC or heat, or you can open them and bring the sea breezes into the house.

Under the house, sinks and showers let you clean up before bringing the catch into the roomy kitchen, and a big fireplace makes the great room cozy for cooler times. A short drive or boat ride, depending on the tide, takes you to the historic Pawley's beach for swimming, surfing, and walking. (Kayaks are available to rent for $75 per week for one, $100 per week for two, and $150 per week for three.)

This is a perfect place for a family to get away from the world and spend time together with our little collection of books and games, or with those you bring yourself. The house is large enough to offer privacy as well.

Nearby are world-class golfing, shopping, historic homes and churches, and restaurants galore. The beautiful sculptures and gardens at Brookgreen are only a few miles north. Fifteen minutes takes you to Georgetown, half an hour to Myrtle Beach, and an hour to Charleston.

We rent by the week only--no short-term rentals. For more details and many more pictures, please see our main website (linked below).

About Nancy Kreml

Mace House is owned by Nancy Mace Kreml, Jane Mace Davis, and John Davis. Nancy and Jane are retired teachers: Jane taught math at Irmo High School and Nancy taught English at Midlands Technical College, both in Columbia. John Davis edited South Carolina Wildlife magazine, and now paints wonderful wildlife scenes. Jane and John also have a house near Brevard, NC, and Nancy (and her husband Bill) have an apartment in Chicago--but we all live in Columbia much of the year with cats, dogs, and other tame and not so tame animals!

Nancy Kreml purchased this house in 1972

Why Nancy Kreml chose Pawleys Island

Our parents, Mary and Parke Mace, built the house in 1972, and our family has enjoyed it ever since. The marsh is the true heart of all our memories, and we're so happy every spring when the first warm evening lets us take cold drinks out to watch the sunset. Our parents and grandparents spent summers at Pawley's, and now our children and (future)grandchildren do, too. Pawley's offers beautiful beaches and marshes, fascinating history, great golf courses, excellent fishing and crabbing, and easy access to Georgetown, Murrell's Inlet, and Charleston, as well as the Francis Marion National Forest.

What makes this house unique

We've always thought that paradise is in the marsh at Pawley's. When we're there, you'll always find us on the dock at sunset, eating supper on the porch, or curled up to read by the fire if the evening is cool. We always like to take a trip to Brookgreen or a nature tour at Hobcaw, eat out or buy fresh-caught seafood and cook it ourselves, play games or watch a movie, and best of all, kayak in the marsh to see egrets, herons, ibis, eagles and other wonderful creatures. And every summer, we swim in the perfect surf on Pawley's beach!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great week at the Mace House. My 2 Granddaughters loved being able to crab off the dock and seeing all of the wildlife. they especially like see the bunny every morning and the turkeys crossing the road with their new chicks. The house was so convenient for us to Georgetown and other areas we like to visit. We look forward to visiting again.

What an exquisite vacation place!

  • 5 of 5

As my wife and I discovered this past week, Mace House is that perfect blend of solitude and convenience. You have the quiet and seclusion of the marsh (we recommend taking advantage of the kayak rental). If you rent the kayaks, exploring the estuary is easy paddling with lots to see--egrets and herons galore, ospreys, and what appeared to be a bald eagle nesting near the marsh's edge. The house has a grand front porch overlooking the marsh, with a wonderful view of sunrise for early risers. By mid-morning, the porch is shaded by the oaks, and the ceiling fans make it comfortable for reading, dining, or just hanging out. There's an inviting hammock as a bonus. With WiFi, TV, and kitchen conveniences, inside the house is just as comfy and relaxing. The beach is just a short drive away with all it has to offer. And within 20-30 minutes, you can visit Brookgreen Gardens (your ticket is good for seven days!), Huntingdon Beach State Park, and the city of Georgetown.

It is a beach house

  • 5 of 5

This is a beach house, not a luxury condo or hotel. The problem we had was the WEATHER which is not in their control at all. The front bedroom has a queen mattress which is firm. The back bedroom has a regular mattress that is soft. The twin beds upstairs were comfortable and we didn't use or test the other upstairs bed. The furniture in the living room was comfortable except for the sofa. There is everything you might need in the kitchen and all the appliances worked fine. Having a washer and dryer was super too.

This beach house is loaded with books, games, and puzzles for your enjoyment and relaxation. The owners are fantastic and answered our questions immediately. There are year round residents with dogs that play outside but are very well behaved.

Overall, I would recommend this for a get-away just hope for warmer weather.

Beautiful location for kayaking and bird watching. Needs new mattresses and deep cleaning.

I want to write a helpful review because I believe that many future guests will continue to love this house. We rented the home because we needed a pet friendly house for our daughter's dog. The house, on a quiet road and backing to a lovely marsh, is indeed pet friendly. Our daughter's dog loved spending time on the back, screen enclosed patio. We enjoyed two of the six kayaks available for rent. Inside, the kitchen was well stocked with cookware and tableware. There was plenty of seating for our family of five. I would describe the furnishings as rustic - appropriate and what you might expect to find in a cabin in the woods.

Where this home fell short for us was in the lingering smell and abundance of fur/hair from prior four-legged guests that greeted us upon arrival. In addition, the main floor mattresses cry out to be replaced instead of just covered with eggcrate foam. Lastly, the house would benefit greatly from a good old-fashioned deep clean. I hope that the very helpful and friendly owners take this advice and use the off season to spruce the place up.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you and your pet enjoyed Mace House, found staying there convenient, and that you were able to enjoy kayaking on the marsh, even in December. We're happy to hear that the kitchen had enough conveniences for you, and that five of you were able to enjoy time together there. We try to replace our mattresses every 7 to 8 years as recommended, and the master will be replaced this spring. The house is cleaned after every rental by a professional service that also cleans local hotels. A deep cleaning is scheduled every April. We pride ourselves in striving to provide a clean inviting environment for each renter and were sorry to hear the house was anything less for you. As we tell each renter prior to sending the contract, if anything seems amiss, please contact us immediately so that we have the opportunity to address it. Again, we're glad you were able to have a good visit with your pet at Mace House.

Beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The porches on Mace House are wonderful - on both sides. We sat on the front porch facing the driveway one afternoon while it rained and found it so very relaxing. We also enjoyed many hours on the screened porch facing the creek, watching the wildlife and the rise and fall of the tide. The hammock on the porch was a great place to read and listen to the waves at the beach in the evening. We were surprised at how close we were to the beach and although you cannot see it we were delighted to hear it so clearly. The best of both worlds. Hearing the waves while enjoying the many pleasures of a tidal creek. We did not realize that there was a beautiful landscaped lawn on the creek side. The plantings and grass added to the beauty. The kitchen is so well stocked that we found everything we needed. There were enough dishes to fill the dishwasher and still have plenty more to use while waiting on those to clean. To top everything off, they allowed us to bring our two dogs. They enjoyed the space and our part lab enjoyed the creek. The dock includes a sloping deck that is used to load the kayaks in the creek but it is also wonderful for dogs to step off for a nice swim at high tide. And did I mention the wildlife and clacking of clams at low tide? Wonderful! Thanks again for sharing your home!

Wonderful relaxing holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay immensely -- third year we've stayed at the Mace House. Had fun fishing, crabbing, rocking on the porch, walking the dogs, going to the beach, and proximity to shops and restaurants. Saw wild turkey and kingfishers, hawks, a variety of egrets and heron. Lovely comfortable home and beautiful location. Love the creek life!

We have been to the Mace House many times and are always eager to return. The crabbing, serene location, and sitting on the screened-in porch watching the birds are three of our favorite things.

Owner's Response: We're so glad to have you return! We're always happy to see that you're coming back for the lovely fall weather and the great crabbing. Fall's such a great time to all kinds of birds, like eagles and osprey, and all the many egrets, ibis, and herons. We hope you'll be back soon. Have a great fall!
