About Keith & Karen Byerley
Keith & Karen are native Buckeyes as Karen grew up in Geneva, with 2 sisters who remained in the area; and Keith in Akron, with 2 brothers. Having met at Kent State University, they celebrated their 50th Anniversary in August, 2017. Most of that time they lived in & out of Colorado where they raised their 3 sons who encouraged their Mom & Dad to retire at the site of their family-owned summer “Cottage,” formerly known as “Palmetto Lodge” (1932-65). It was purchased with Karen’s parents in 1979. Please visit our website at palmettobeachrental.com for more information.
Keith & Karen Byerley purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Keith & Karen Byerley chose Geneva-on-the-Lake
In 2004, the new “Cottage” was built along with a 200’ limestone lake revetment, giving the next generation a family legacy to enjoy on this beloved 3-acre beachfront property. Keith & Karen have 6 grandchildren and Karen’s sisters have 8 grandchildren who all enjoy their visits to the “Cottage.” In 2009, they opened the walk out apartment in the lower level of their home to summer guests by starting Palmetto Beach Rental.

This place is a real gem. The owners are very nice and super helpful. We had our own private beach which is well maintained. There are many waterfront properties in the area, but I don't think any of them have a private beach or any beach for that matter. There was a nice hot tub and a golf cart to ride around the properties. The home is on an elevation, so you get a really nice view of the lake. The home was very comfortable and well appointed. There were plenty of fluffy towels, trash bags, toilet paper and other accessories. That's not usual with most vacation rentals. There was also strong air conditioning. There is only one bathroom, but it is very large with a frosted glass shower door and there is a privacy wall by the commode. We were fine with 10 people sharing a bathroom. There is also a heated outdoor shower which is nice. There are many outdoor areas to sit. They have covered seating on the beach with a nice big trashcan. The beach is at the bottom of the small hill and surrounded by woods, so it is very private. Nice sandy beach with pretty smooth rocks. The pictures don't really do it justice. Would stay again.
Extremely well kept with plenty more of room!
This was our 4th year at "The Cottage" and we couldn't be happier. Six of our grandchildren joined us with our children. We get so much joy just watching them jumping waves, searching for sea glass, building sand castles and of course enjoying the evening beach fire. They are already excited for 2018! Keith and Karen couldn't be more accommodating. You are treated more like a friend then a guest. So glad to have found this beach house treasure!
It was a fabulous property!
Our overall experience was complete satisfaction. We loved the privacy of the beach and the yard was fantastic to play games. Without a doubt, we will go back!
We were excited to find this location to celebrate a 40th and 50th birthday. The location was beautiful and the weather was wonderful. The house worked out perfectly for our group of 9. The private beach was awesome. We enjoyed having a beach fire and relaxing. There was a festival going on downtown but we couldn't tear ourselves away from the beach to go. The owners were very nice and accommodating! Great weekend getaway!
A favorite spot!
Just had our third stay here and as expected was absolutely pleased and thrilled to have found this wonderful home. Fortunately for us the weather was awesome as well as the beach. The lake was very calm and the water especially clear. The sunsets were stunning against our fire pit as we enjoyed hotdogs and smores with all our little ones. We couldn't have asked for a better time. A special thank you to both Karen and Keith for again opening up their home to us. We are so grateful. Looking forward to a fourth visit next July
This location was perfect for a family vacation for three adult siblings and a teenage son (with room for many more). It is a large, home-y & comfortable, clean space with everything we needed. The private beach was great for wading/swimming (a bit cold), and hunting smoothed stones and beach glass daily; we also cooked s'mores over a beach fire at night. My son loved "driving" us to/from the beach in the golf cart though the beach was steps away. We enjoyed beautiful views from the porch and front lawn, especially at sunset, and/or just sitting looking out on the water and reading a book. The house is just a few minutes drive into town and Geneva State Park (bike and walking trails, kayaks/paddleboard rentals, marina), and about 15 minutes from a number of wineries (we liked Grand River, Debonne, Ferrante) which made for some nice wine tastings and dining out. The owners were very kind and accessible if we needed anything. We would definitely return, possibly even more in our group!
Palmetto Beach Rental is on the “Lake Erie Ohio Coastal Tour” route along SR 531. Geneva State Park & Lodge with Marina and boat launching ramp is 2 miles west; charter fishing boats and guides are available at the marina. Access public bike & walking trails. Travel along 2 covered bridge driving tours with 17 bridges. Visit over 20 wineries on the “Vines and Wines Trail”. Stop at fresh produce stands along the roadsides to Amish Country. Motor the magnificent “Fall Foliage Tour”. Watch ore boats load and unload in historic Ashtabula Harbor. Participate in the “Geneva Area Grape JAMboree” (last weekend - September), AND of course visit the exciting and entertaining Geneva-on-the-Lake “Strip” with the center of activity only 1 mile to the west of Palmetto Beach Rental.
The RV resort at Indian Creek is only 100 yards to the east along State Route 531.
The nationally known Spire Institute is only 8 miles to the South, at the Interstate 90 Interchange. This provides excellent sports facilities such as an Olympic swimming pool and indoor track and soccer fields. A 'Must See'!
