About the property

Cottage on 2 levels with a ocean view from the bedroom balcony

Lush Tropical Setting

Bamboo Cottage is for nature lovers, set in a lush garden within a five minute walk to the sea. The cottage is nestled among palms and clusters of tall bamboo. Adding to the tranquillity, as the sway and rustle of these trees make music in the Caribbean breeze.

The Cottage is on two levels, the large verandah entrance leads into the open plan kitchen and living area which is well stocked, an island wth a gas range, a convection oven and microwave for cooking. Also an additional shower is located on the verandah for

your return from the beach or the pool. A spiral staircase goes up to the bedroom with an 'open plan bathroom' . Also another verandah off the bedroom which looks thru the bamboo out to sea

and the yachts in Falmouth Harbour.

Falmouth Harbour is the centre of the yachting industry in Antigua & Barbuda. This is on the southwestern side of the island and is the home of the internationally famous Classic Regatta followed by Antigua Sailing Week. Also a five minute drive to the beautiful Pidgeon Beach, Shirley Heights Lookout (Antigua's National Park) and Historic Nelson's Dockyard.

Bamboo House apartment #262413 is also available. Please see listing for details.

Bamboo Garden: The owner lives on the upper floor of Bamboo House, which is on the other side of the property from the cottage, However the property has been cleverly designed to give everyone their own access and privacy, while having the security of knowing there is someone around should you need any assistance.

The property has a very romantic and relaxed feeling and an ideal place to just sit back and enjoy, also a good base from which to do your exploring of the island.

About The Owner

Joanne, your host is a Canadian who has been living in Antigua for the past 24 years. She is an avid gardener and the property reflects this. Another of Joanne's passion is food, for over 12 years she ran a restaurant she started in the harbour. Having sold the restaurant she now turns her attention to the maintenance of her garden and the operation of a Farmer's Market. Want to feel at home, Joanne is your best host!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2009

Why The Owner chose Falmouth Harbour

I had the cottage built in 2009 in my garden as I think it is a very beautiful place and wanted to share it with others.

What makes this cottage unique

The sound of the birds singing during the day and the tree frogs in the evening add to swimming tin the pool that is surrounded by bamboo and palm trees and is even more beautiful in the evening in the bath temperture water and the star clustered skies.

SSSSShhhhh keep it our hidden secret !!!!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived totally exhausted from very busy stressful jobs and walked into this hidden tranquil paradise. To greet us was the fabulous Joanne, an amazing lady with the ability to make you feel welcome, at ease and nothing was too much, a beautiful and funny soul that I hope remains in our lives.... although a stranger when we got there, I looked forward to seeing her when she would say hi, never intrusive , both her and Max and Rosie her gorgeous dogs got the balance right. The cottage was everything we needed, being a fussy one with cleanliness, I could not fault the linens and towels etc... the pool provided enough privacy between the two properties so as not to feel overlooked. putting my food in the compost now makes me miss feeding the tortoise in Joannes garden I enjoyed such a simple task who knew I like watching tortoise ! We cannot recommend the cottage or the house enough, have no hesitation booking this one people, I promise you will not regret it. But I don't want it to get too popular, so we can never book it !!!! Jo, thank you for everything.... Maria, Duncan and Blaize we hope to see you soon xxxxxxxx ps Duncan says hi to his "bird" x

Very comfortable and cosy.

  • 5 of 5

Bamboo Cottage was lovely, set in gorgeous gardens and located conveniently for local supermarkets and bars and restaurants. Nicer than a studio, with 2 floors separating bedroom from living area. Joanne is lovely and welcoming, and provided a huge platter of cheese, biscuits, fruit, home-made hummous and pitta upon arrival which was a perfect meal after long flight and until we got to shop for provisions. Would heartily recommend, together with her attractive 2-bed apartment in the same garden-setting.

Peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at bamboo cottage for our 40th wedding anniversary. We prefer far from the madding crowd. And bamboo cottage delivered. It is hard to believe that Joanne's garden is only 17 years in the making. So lush with the sounds of the birds in the day and a cacophony of insect sounds in the evening. It felt so private just the place to read a good book, take a dip in the lovely warm pool. It was hard to leave. The area around English harbour is pretty. With plenty of eateries. We found epicurean at St Johns and jolly bay. An American style supermarket with hot food counters and for us Brits Waitrose items!!!! What a surprise. However we like to try local food had a nice lunch at Caribbean taste on our last day, once we found it.

We took a boat trip with Sean. Snorkelling the reef, copious drinks, and lovely chicken rotis, this is a small sailing boat, with a maximum of 8 people. We would recommend this. More personal than the huge catamarans rocking up at a quiet cove music blasting out. We have some great memories of our stay and hope to return someday. Thank you for your your hospitality Joanne and of course for the great dip, veggies, rum punch and beer.

Great stay at Bamboo Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect. Joanne has an eye for detail and has decorated the cottage beautifully. Not only is the space cozy, it is functional and clean. We loved the front porch with the hammock and table to eat at next to hummingbird feeder frequented by banana birds (quite a few) and a humming bird. Breakfast was spent watching the humming bird compete with the banana birds for the sugary drink (he was outnumbered about 50 to one but held his/her own - quite entertaining actually). The yard was lovely as well with all sorts of tropical plants, including large palm trees around the pool, that added some nice shade and dappled sunlight for reading on the deck around the pool in the morning, but enough sunshine in the afternoon to bask in when swimming in the pool. There was a nice cool breeze, and at night we did not get too hot even without air conditioning, which was a concern because we don't like sleeping in the heat. The road to the cottage is a bit rough but we rented a four wheel drive (as per Joanne's recommendation) and so it did not bother us at all. Nelson Dockyards close by is lovely as well as Pigeon Beach (also close). We also took a trip out to Half Moon Bay which was fantastic if you like beaches that are a bit off the beaten track.

Joanne was a fabulous host as well, providing all sorts of recommendations on sights to see around the island and good places to eat out. She is very professional and knowledgeable.

All around a great stay! Keep in mind though that it would be best to rent a car, preferably four wheel drive. Joanne recommended a good car rental place. Thanks Joanne for your hospitality.

Perfect and then some!

  • 5 of 5

The Bamboo Cottage is one of the most island spirited properties we have ever stayed in.

If you prefer the peaceful privacy away from the resort holiday crowd - this is a dream come true. Its located on the best side of the island in our opinion. You are 5 minutes from Falmouth and English Harbors where the yachts dock. There are a good variety of dining options or if you are just looking to enjoy a cool rum punch to end your day; there are some fun open air bars appropriate for all ages. Pigeon Beach is close by and offers gorgeous sunset views. Nelson's Dockyard is just up the street which is a wonderful venue to visit for some history and harbor side relaxation and a bit of shopping. St. John's is only 20 minutes away.

This property is a fun little bungalow thoughtfully decorated and designed with Caribbean flair. The caramel colored wood throughout and the happy accouterments make it a magical stay. Have your coffee on the porch mornings and watch the eager hummingbirds enjoy a sugary drink from the feeders. Evenings will serenade you with the song of the peepers and the warm tropical breezes rustling in the trees.

Your hostess Joanne is adorable and very interesting. She is truly accommodating and you will leave wanting her to be your life long friend. She is very knowledgeable of the island and will be a wealth of information for the asking.

The whole property is surrounded by a tall locked fence disguised by the exquisite landscaping giving you a very secure feeling. Every type of tropical flora variety is found throughout the lot planted thoughtfully for the privacy of each of the house guests. The pool is designed as an outdoor room with comfortable colorful chaises to sun on surrounded by swaying palm trees.

Befriend the land tortoises with an evening snack left over from your food preparation. They tuck themselves away during the heat of the day and come out at night to smile for you. They reside in a separate garden area in the back of the property where Joanne grows fresh herbs for the nearby yacht chefs.

For a beautiful piece of Antiguan Heaven - stay at The Bamboo Cottage.

QUINTESSENTIAL HOSPITALITY AT BAMBOO COTTAGE, ANTIGUA

  • 5 of 5

Before selecting Bamboo Cottage in Antigua, I read as many reviews as I could to help in my decision. Everything I read about the Cottage and host, Joanne Lighthizer is true! The Cottage is well equipped, clean and efficient. The grounds are impeccable and lush with a gorgeous tropical landscape. When my son and I arrived, Joanne had prepared a lovely tray of healthy dip and veggies, locally grown from her yard. She even had the fridge stocked with juices, wine, beer and water. I've rented many holiday apartments and homes, but never had these types of amenities offered upon arrival. I loved the swimming pool, as it gave me the opportunity to swim short laps to work of all the roti and conch fritters, delicious local eats. Sharing the pool with renters of the Bamboo House was never a problem. They wanted to sunbathe in the morning; and I preferred a late afternoon swim. Joanne was very helpful and kind in giving us suggestions on where to eat and shop; she even took us around Falmouth Harbour on our first day, and included us in an excursion to a Christmas craft fair near Jolly Harbour. When my husband arrived from sailing from Gibraltar to Antigua, he was amazed at how comfortable Bamboo Cottage was! Our friends who also sailed to Antigua for the April Classic Regatta loved the layout and environment of the Cottage as well. As many others have commented, Joanne (who lives on the property in the larger Bamboo House), was respectful of her guests' privacy, yet helpful and responsive when assistance was needed. I highly recommend this property and will have lasting memories of our Christmas in Antigua because of Joanne's extraordinary hospitality during our stay. Her rental rates are fair, given the amenities and good nature of the host. She is an honest business person, and extends that trust to her guests as well. Joanne will even assist you with car rental if you need a recommendation. I had no driving experience on the other side of the road, having driven in America all my life. Joanne offered to sit with me on my first ride, but because Falmouth and English Harbors' traffic are not as busy as St. John's, I was able to drive on my own, with my son coaching as navigator and "co-pilot". No need to think twice about Bamboo Cottage! You get a lot of value for your money!! Joanne, you are the Quintessential Hostess of Antigua!! Mahalo for making our Christmas in Antigua so special!!!
