Our condo faces southeast with an uninhibited view of the mountains, Shipwreck Rock and, of course, the beautiful Pacific Ocean. In the winter months, you can watch whales breach right from our lanai!
The condo is on three levels. The first floor has a half bath, kitchen, dining and living area and of course, our lovely lanai. One of our special features on this floor is a side cut window that allows for a commanding view of the ocean while one sits on the couch. No other unit at the Makahuena has this unique feature! In February 2014 we updated the kitchen with brand new stainless steel appliances. The living area has recently been remodeled as well with beautiful new tile.
On the second floor is the master bedroom with a similar side cut window that allows one to wake up with the ocean in sight. The master bedroom was upgraded in January of 2011 with a brand new premium mattress, box spring and side tables. The recently renovated master bath has a walk in shower with beautiful glass blocking and tile. Also on this floor is another bedroom with twin beds (which can be pulled together to make 1 Queen) and another full bath with walk in shower.
Our third floor 'loft' has a queen size bed with an expansive window offering unfettered view of the mountains and ocean. Although the 3rd floor is considered a 'loft', it does not fit the mold of traditional lofts. We appreciate the layout especially because the bedrooms are on different floors from the living area. It affords one some privacy and quiet while others may be socializing.
It is a short walk to all the amenities provided by the Grand Hyatt Resort as well as to nearby beaches Brennecke's, Shipwreck, the protected waters of Baby Beach, and the famous Poipu Beach, which was named America's Best Beach by the Travel Channel.
For all of you thrill seekers, our condo is located next to some of the best surf breaks in the south shore including PK's, Waiohai(rights and lefts), Left Lefts and Brennecke's Beach, which is a great beach break for boogie boarding and body surfing! Also, make sure to check out the cliff jumpers at Shipwreck's Beach(you can see the cliff from our lanai!). Nukomoi Surf Co. in Poipu has some great boards to rent and has some killer deals on week-long rentals.

Our family is from Vermont but we consider Kaua'i our second home. We absolutely love it here and would love to spend more time if we had it! We are very excited to give you the opportunity to stay in our home.
The Owner purchased this condo in 2003
The Makahuena is located on the sunny South Shore of the Garden Isle, one of the most desirable vacation areas in Hawaii. The unobstructed Oceanviews from our condo convinced us that we found our piece of paradise.
The views and sounds from the Pacific will capture your heart! The Makahuena is in walking distance to many of the popular attractions on the South Shore, which made it ideal for us and our family. From award-winning beaches to amazing shopping and dining, you could enjoy your entire stay without leaving the vicinity of Poipu.
We rented this unit for our son and his family of four kids ages 7 through 11. It was just perfect for them! They couldn't get enough whale watching from the deck. The kids fought over the loft bedroom with its fabulous view. Our daughter-in-law said the kitchen had everything she needed for her big family. She was also happy to find the beach towels and boogie boards. This is a great family retreat. The kids are already talking about going again next year!
We had a fantastic stay in this condo.
Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves was amazing! The condo was well equipped and had a personal touch. The view was just amazing!
We were 5 people staying in the condo, 2 Tweens, 1 3-year old and 2 grown-ups and we all loved it. Would be very happy to return if we would get the opportunity.
The condo was wonderful, the beds were comfortable, the view was amazing and we were in walking distance to beaches, shopping, the bus system and dining! Sitting on the lanai, we could watch whales breech, ships go by and amazing sunrises and sunsets. We would definitely stay here again. - The Hargis family, Fairbanks, Alaska.
Lots of room, nice location, loved the view. Lots of space but needs updating in kitchen, dishwasher did not work. Would like to see some color on walls--so sterile looking. Would be nice to be able to log into Netflix, etc with an easier connection for rainy days.
For a VRBO in Kauai I expected better for $275/night. The furniture and kitchen were outdated, the towels were old and the kitchen was not very well stocked, not to mention, it just felt dingy and dirty throughout. I also thought carpet in the bedroom and the stairway needed to be replaced and was very dirty. We were told a crib would be provided and confirmed this days before arrival, and no crib was anywhere to be found. A great breeze throughout made the lack of AC no issue at all.
We've rented this unit twice, in winter and summer - both were wonderful. Both this unit and the entire complex are immaculately well maintained. You can view ocean sunrise from the lanai (balcony) and sunset from a few steps away. In the summer, Dolphins can be seen and in the winter, Humpback Whales. This location works well for both families and adult couples. Beaches, snorkeling, restaurants, and shopping are all nearby.
Whale Watching from Lanai(winter), ATV Excursions, Zip Lining, Movie Location Tours, Helicopter Tours, Nature Walks, Ocean Sunrise/Sunset Viewing from property
