This charming Saltbox Cottage and Guest Bunkie are located in a small out port called Bauline. Bauline is located at the base of a 1000-foot high mountain where publicly groomed trails will lead you to the summit. This quaint, modern and very clean, ocean front century home has a lovely western view of Conception Bay and the village's lobster/crab fishing port. The Saltbox Cottage is located just 15 minutes from St. John's. Sunsets in Bauline are spectacular, especially while sipping on a cocktail on your own private, 300 square foot patio. Beside the property is a babbling brook that will serenade you to blissful slumber.

Originally built in 1892, the Saltbox is carefully renovated to accommodate modern amenities however; we have attempted to keep a lot of the original character. Notice the stairs leading to the second floor are worn by over 100 years of traffic. The Guest Bunkie is newly built and just a few steps away from the cottage.

Highlights of this stunning property:
The Saltbox is a 1500 square foot, 2 story century home on the ocean. The Guest Bunkie is 150 square feet and offers the third bedroom and half bath. This property can sleep up to 6 maximum with 3 bedrooms.

Cottage Features:
Stunning ocean front views from your private deck with lounge and dining furniture and seating for 8 guests. The main floor of the cottage boasts a large living room with light streaming in and windows throughout, a fireplace for cool mornings. There is a bright powder room, washer / dryer, large dining room with seating for 6 and a large full kitchen with a second dining table. The second floor boasts a large, bright, airy master bedroom with king bed, crisp linens and windows for spectacular ocean views. Across the bright hall you will enjoy a clean, modern, full size washroom with tile floor and stunning views of the ocean and harbor. The second bedroom on this floor has two twin beds with decorated with beautiful bright linens and windows that offer views of the ocean and harbor.
This beautiful property comes with wireless internet, cable TV, VCR, stereo, large private 300 square foot deck with great panoramic ocean views, with outdoor patio furniture, 4 Muskoka lounge chairs with foot stools, and BBQ.

The bright, modern Guest Bunkie offers large windows with stunning ocean views, plush king size bed with crisp linens and one half bathroom with sink and toilet.

Please note: The Saltbox is not suggested for the elderly as the staircase, although beautiful, is fairly narrow. Also, the shower does not have a handrail.

Wow!!! a million dollar view is way to little, it’s a billion dollar view. We had an exceptional stay. Francine made us feel so welcome, the cottage is beautifully situated overlooking conception bay. The sunsets were amazing. Waking up to the sound of waves and sea birds was so relaxing. We had our morning coffee on the deck that overlooks the wharf, and a glass of wine watching the sun set. Truly an amazing slice of paradise.Thank you so much in helping make our stay in your beautiful province a memorable experience that will last a lifetime.

Amazing views!

We stayed at the Saltbox July 06-13 2025. Myself, husband, two boys and two grannies! Everyone enjoyed the space, whale watching, hiking and fishing with the locals. We will be back.

Amazing Location!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 1 week stay at this quaint little cottage. Everything was perfect and homey. We enjoyed looking out at the view every night. Highly recommend for a true Newfoundland experience!

Great family cottage

This property was great for my family of six ( 4 teenagers). Lots of hilly hiking trails, fishing off the pier and close to St. John’s.

Best Sunsets

A lovely place to relax and get away from summer heat and city noise. People in the tiny community were very friendly. The house was comfortable with all the convenience of a home stay. The host is very friendly and available.

Great month in Bauline

The Saltbox was the perfect location for our Newfoundland vacation. Close to the East Coast Trail, minutes from the city and with the most incredible view and sunsets. Could not imagine anything better.

Beautiful house and location

The saltbox is well maintained and super attractive. Everything is updated but the historical character of the house remains. The view is beautiful and exactly as depicted on the pictures. There are hiking opportunities within walking distance from the house which is awesome. The community members were kind and welcoming. I highly recommend this house and would be happy to stay here again. The four of us has a great vacation and the house contributed greatly to the experience.

Oceanfront Gem

We stayed at the Saltbox this past June and it was a fantastic experience. The home is bright & clean and has a nice library of NFLD books, a wonderful CD collection and more then 40 odd movies (not that we watched much TV). The sunsets on the bay were glorious and the breeze was fresh. Desmond brought us Crab and lobster and we ate on the patio with a 180 degree view of the ocean, whales, icebergs and small fishing boats. The house is mere feet from the water and the small harbor beside us was a continuous source of amusement. The owners have managed to modernize the home while keeping it's 123 year old charm. We climbed the mountain behind the house....hard but so satisfying once you make it and with St. John's only 15 minutes away we managed to visit just about everything on our list including the Irish loop. We dream of coming back again. Thank you!

What an amazing place

We had a pod of 20 humpbacks whales about 200 metres from the beautiful deck and amazing historic Saltbox house. Thats a bonus along with the Bald eagle who was checking the daily catch of fisherman down at the bay. The cottage is so well equiped with a large eat-in kitchen to prepare our meals. A huge dining room and family room to boot. The bedrooms were fantastic, washrooms as well. The bunkie was perfect. Not a complaint for anything. Francine has decorated this house with tons of Newfoundland charm. It's so close to St John so an easy drive to the sights but coming into Bauline you will realize that this is one of the best views ever. Wow!! Thanks to Francine for being attentive to our grandaughters needs and any questions. So easy to relax that it was very hard to leave.

A Slice of Heaven!

We loved our stay in this wonderful Saltbox! The house is so cute, very comfortable, and very clean. Fresh flowers was a great touch to welcome us! The Saltbox is in a quiet and peaceful fishing village and only a 10 minute ride away from city life in St. John's. We explored many coffee shops in the city as well as some in smaller communities on the Avalon Penninsula. The scenery is stunning! We had beautiful sunsets that we enjoyed watching from the deck. We were able to see a pod of dolphins and three minke whales from the deck. When up early enough in the mornings, we saw the fishermen leave in their boats from the wharf to go for lobster not far from the house. We met one of the fishermen named Desmond. What a wonderful guy! It was a pleasure meeting him and his son! We bought several fresh lobsters from him and what delicious lobsters they were. We also met several neighbours. They certainly lived up to the reputation that Newfoundanders are very friendly people. We also met a wonderful couple on our daily walks who invited us for coffee! We were able to walk several parts of the East Coast Trail. Francine, the owner, always responded very quickly with any questions we had. Can't say enough about this vacation! We hope to return one day. If we could we would rate this rental much higher than a 5 star. Frank and Louise Stevens, Barrie, Ontario

Wasted potential

This property has a magnificent view and the cottage has great character. The king bed was very comfortable and the home was clean. The linen supply was ample. The nearby walking trails were fun and seemed well maintained. Unfortunately we arrived at this cottage directly after another rental in Nova Scotia where we were treated as valued guests. The owners of the NS cottage made sure we had all the information we needed about the cottage, wood stove, appliances, area attractions, restaurants etc. Anything we needed to be comfortable was promptly and happily provided. By stark contrast, the Bauline Saltbox owner/property manager left us feeling unwelcome in the home. They declined to provide firewood, with the explanation that guests didn't use it in the summer even though firewood was listed in the general description of the property. Given that on our arrival, house was cold, it was barely above freezing outside and the pouring rain soaked us just going a few feet to get inside, the owner was asked but declined to provide any firewood. It kind of set the tone for our stay. There was a barbecue but no propane tank. The deck had incredible views but the furniture was too uncomfortable to entice us to spend much time there once the weather improved. Given that the payment for our 2 week stay was all made upfront along with a substantial damage deposit, we had no recourse. We wound up leaving after 5 nights. It really would have taken so little to make us feel comfortable, as though the owner cared about our happiness. We would never go back, nor would we recommend this cottage to anyone. In fact this experience has left us very reluctant to consider any future VRBO rentals.

Amazing view!

The cottage was stunning and had all necessities needed for our stay. It was very clean and had comfortable furniture and beds. We enjoyed the beautiful sunsets and relaxing on the deck. It was a 30 min drive to St. John’s and 12 minute drive to Torbay. Torbay had the Traditional Coffee and Deli shop which is a must for delicious sandwiches, lasagna and baked goods. We unfortunately did not see any whales, as it was late in the season. Enjoyed watching the fishermen on the weekend. Met a lovely neighbour who provided us with a history of the town and stories. Visited the Botanical Garden, The Room, Cape Spear and St. John’s. All sites were approximately a half hour from the cottage. The cottage is in small harbour of 30 homes. Very peaceful and serene.

Wow!!

The one problem with the Saltbox is that it is so perfect we were a touch unmotivated to sightsee. The view from the deck is hard to pull yourself away from (bonus, saw whales 3 of 7 the days we stayed). In all seriousness, we can't imagine a better base from which to explore the many sights, entertainment, history, nature and more that the area offers. The cottage and location are both 20/10... immaculate, private, comfortable, with many thoughtful touches and everything needed for an exceptionally enjoyable stay, including seemingly endless options for fun and adventure within an easy drive/hike. Thank you for the warm welcome and sharing your piece of paradise with 2 grateful visitors!

Relaxing getaway!

We enjoyed our stay at the salt box cottage so much so that we will be back! Newfoundland was everything we thought it would be and more. The people are so friendly.. the cottage was adorable and the whale watching from the deck was the icing on the cake. There was no better place to ‘turn back time’ and relax and rejuvenate. We were sad to leave and can’t wait to return.

Cosy Salt Box cottage

After being on the road for a week. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to relax and the cosiness of the salt box cottage. The local books on the bookshelf were a treat to browse through. I even finished one book during our stay. All amenities were provided and we were completely comfortable during our stay. The view of the harbour from the back deck interesting and beautiful at all times of the day.

Outstanding

Our week at the saltbox was everything we hoped for and more. The cottage has been lovingly restored and well appointed. Loved the decor. Location was perfect. Close to St. John's and within easy driving to many local attractions. Hard to put into words how much we enjoyed the setting. From early morning fog to some amazing sunsets. The wood burning stove was a welcome addition to take the chill off some very chilly mornings in early June. The only complaint we have is that the week went by much too quickly.

Charming house!

We just spent an idyllic week at this sweet saltbox in Bauline, Newfoundland. The house was perfect as a base for exploring the Avalon Peninsula. St. John's was only about a 25 minute drive away, which made going out for dinner quite easy, though my husband was nervous about hitting a moose in the dark. (Never even saw one despite looking very hard!) But, on our first morning in the house, we did see a pair of whales swimming in the ocean right off our deck. They hung around most of the day. Magical! The house was clean and tidy, and very nicely decorated with many local nautical items. When we weren't exploring, we enjoyed beautiful sunsets and watching the activity in the small, local fishing harbor just below the house. On our last full day, we were lucky enough to be offered some fresh fish right off the boat to grill that night. Julia, the property manager, was extremely helpful in answering any questions we had. I would heartily recommend this lovely house to any couple coming to explore Eastern Newfoundland. Only caveat would be to know about the narrow, steep stairs to the second floor bedroom, not easy for us at age 72 and 87 to navigate. Otherwise, this cottage is pure heaven.
