Old Florida Charm with Modern Amenities

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the Summerplace home with comments from our group such as, "Awesome!", and "Have you seen the kitchen?". We are a particular and peculiar group of friends and this home met the needs of every person on our excursion. This property is quiet and located in a beautiful live oak covered lot with plenty old Florida charm. Do not mistake the Old Florida Charm with old and run down. This home is quite the opposite!

There is less than a five minute walk to the private beach- that we had mostly to ourselves. The property owner was kind and helpful and available to assist those of us who are less technologically inclined than the rest.

The property is very clean and has more than we could have asked for. The gourmet kitchen was fully equipped with every gadget a cook would use... I brought a microplane zester with me to help execute a key lime pie, there was already one on site(as well as an electric juicer)!

Unfortunately, we were struck with bad weather and the only thing this High Tech Home could not do was change the weather for us....However, there were plenty of movies to watch on the home theater. Oh yeah, and cook and eat some more. Luckily there is a gym on site for the motivated.

Once we arrived there was no reason or desire for any of us to leave the property. When our trip was over we did not want to leave. This home is certainly on our list to visit again.

This home is absolutely disgusting. There were ants on the beds, ants on the floors, ants on the dinning room table, some kind of bug wings (maybe termites) on the bench in the master bathroom, and LIVE worms in the towels in the master bathroom. There were stains on the comforters, and when we went to put our grandson to bed in the daybed next to the master bedroom, there was a used band aid in the bed. We spent the first day of our trip spraying for the bugs, cleaning the house, and washing the linens. On top of the cleaning and bug issues there were safety issues as well. The deck around the house is rotten, and on two occasions we actually stepped through the deck. The railings around the deck were loose. There were wasp nest outside that had to be sprayed. The gas stove was not functioning properly and when you tried to turn off the burner the igniters would not turn off. There had been no yard maintenance done. We found a leaf blower in the garage and cleaned up the driveway and deck the best we could.

We have rented many houses through vrbo and have never had as bad of an experience as we had with this home. I had asked the owner for our deposit back earlier in the year when we found out the house was for sale, and he refused to refund the deposit and was very rude and condescending. Please be aware that if you do rent this house there is no refund on your deposit.

Nice Inside But Too Much Deferred Maintenance Outside & A Lot of Bugs

  • 3 of 5

The location, neighbors, walk-ability to beach are all great. Someone put a lot of money into this house but either through time and/or neglect the maintenance has suffered.

The outside is especially in need of some attention. The deck is falling apart and is not safe for children with visible holes in the rotting wood and exposed nails. The exposed concrete could use some pressure washing and only some of the outdoor lights were operational. There were also a handful of lights inside the house that needed new bulbs and the fans need new blades. It appeared like this home was foreclosed on and was left without maintenance and A/C for a time. In addition, the lattice railing had fallen off the master bedroom porch which is unacceptable if there are kids staying in the home.

While I agree with the owner that some bugs are just part of beach living (I grew up less than 10 miles away), I would suggest upping the pest control contract. There were way too many spiders (alive and dead), cockroaches, ants and termites on the INSIDE of this home. The big negative here was that the flying termites and ants appeared while cooking breakfast on stove the first morning.

The city water was off upon arrival. The owner was very responsive and it was fixed by the time we came home from dinner. The owner was great to work with. However, I believe the house needs a few weekends of small projects. Also, the house needs more pest control and a better cleaning staff. Hopefully some of our money will go towards those projects and a new deck. If he is able to fund these repairs and maintenance, I would consider staying here again.

Communication with Owner "F" / House "B"

  • 2 of 5

At the time of my final payment on the rental was due, I was blocked from making it online to VRBO and directed back to the owner. After a couple of e-mails and phone calls, the owner finally got back to me. Over the phone I gave him my credit card information for the payment. The charge hit my account 3 days later from owners "business" account not VRBO/Home Away but it took 3 months for the Owner to credit my VRBO account. During that time since my VRBO account showed that I was in arrears, I was blocked from being able to access important check-in details and I became concerned that I was the victim of a scam. It took repeated e-mails from me and a complaint to VRBO to get the Owner to post the credit to my account. At that point I thought everything would be ok.

At the agreed upon check-in day/time we arrived at the house only to find the previous tenants still occupying it. A 6 hour delay in gaining access to the house ensued. This forced the relocation of a planned family dinner at an added expense to me. When we finally settled into the house, although clean, it was obvious that repairs were not being made. Leaky faucets, random broken lighting in the house and absence of lighting on deck, front stairs and driveway, peeling paint, broken door locks, much of the decking planks warped and popped up, and damaged outdoor furniture were immediately evident. Unkempt landscaping, a pile of old wood, and a rickety For Sale sign out front contributed to the house appearing to be abandoned. It is definitely no longer in the condition that is depicted in the photos on the website.

I have repeatedly requested payment for the lost rental time and extra expenses that I incurred, but have gotten no response.

Summerplace in the Winter

  • 4 of 5

Don't let the outside scare you away. The inside of this house is very nice! Mostly updated with many upgrades and a wonderful kitchen. Our only critique would be the outdoor lighting and the 2nd floor shower. We couldn't find anywhere to turn on proper lighting outside so we had to use our flashlights to see at night. The shower on the second floor is difficult to turn off and we struggled to get hot water. Outside of that, it was a fantastic house and a perfect place for our family to stay while attending a local wedding. Walking distance to the beach was a major plus! What a great alternative to a hotel...If ever in Vero Beach area again, we would definitely stay here!!

House was good, Owner and VRBO Not!

  • 1 of 5

Stayed in this perfect house back in the Spring. Still don't have my deposit back! No arguments that I'm not owned the money. In fact we bought more towels and left them for the next renters. Owner keeps promising that the check is in the mail. BEWARE! I won't use VRBO again, either.
