**NOW BOOKING FOR SUMMER 2016**
This 'eclectic classic' beach home is situated on a wonderfully located 2nd row lot, with a private beach access located directly across the street--a rare combination anywhere on Holden Beach, especially so close to the strand and the bridge!
Located at 218 Ocean Blvd West, 1/4 mile (two blocks) from the Holden Beach bridge, local bars, restaurants, ice cream, bike/kayak rentals and shopping are all a short walk or bike ride away. We also offer a grilling patio and small backyard area for pets. Bikes for adults and children are available for rental at local shops and are a wonderful and relaxing way to see the island.
A 3 bedroom and 1 bath, our little cottage is perfect for a couples get away or a small family of 4. With whimsical furnishings and original knotty pine paneling, our home is the perfect combination of old and new and will make you feel right at home! We have an enclosed outdoor shower area (cold water only) to rinse beach sand and a spacious parking area that can accommodate 2-3 vehicles. The covered porch with ocean views offers the perfect spot for enjoying morning coffee, evening sunsets or the afternoon sea breeze. From the porch, there are two wonderful ocean views...check our pictures from all year-round!
With the original classic tongue-in-groove pine paneling and hard wood floors covered with antique oriental rugs, 'Carolina Country' provides it's occupants with a true feeling of home and history. The eclectic decor is a combination of memorabilia and unique contributions from many family members over the years. The living room table, for example, was handcrafted by my maternal grandfather, L.T.'Leaky' Davis, from the original ships wheel collected directly from a WWII Liberty Ship, off of Wrightsville Beach. In addition to being a master craftsman, he remains a legend in the world of Gulf Stream billfishing. Most of the hanging artworks are, either dedicated to or, done by a member of this artistic family. This is 'old school' beach house personified.
Having weathered many storms through the years, 'Carolina Country' stands as a shining example of the life and energy of the wonderful people that have called it home. Come sit back, relax and experience Holden Beach the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

We are a five generation family from Holden Beach. My grandparents and great-grandmother moved here from South Carolina in the early 60's and made HB their home. My sister and I were born and raised on Holden Beach and have spent many special holidays and family gatherings at Carolina Country. My husband Jamie is a native from Varnumtown and we have 3 daughters, 25, 24 and 8. We live on a 55-acre horse farm in Bolivia, the Brunswick County seat, (which is about 20 minutes from the beach) though we love all watersports, especially surfing, boating and SUP'ing! My husband is a carpenter, like my father, and he works on the island most every day. My oldest daughter manages our horse barn and teaches riding lesson's, organizes our summer camps and brokers horses. The 24 yo is a recent cum laude graduate of Meredith College with B. S. Degree and is currently working on her application to attend Veterinary School at NC State or UGA. Our youngest is a 3rd grader at South Brunswick Charter School and our daily reminder to laugh more, believe in fairies and all things magical and enjoy life each and every day! Though my parents now reside in Boone, NC, their hearts are with Holden Beach and the 45+ years spent here building a Family, a Business and a Town.
Ginny Varnum purchased this house in 1962
This historic home represents the combination of the Griffin and Davis families, has housed five generations of the Griffin family and continues to be a home that embodies the essence of Holden Beach like no other. The quaint, well-kept home was built in 1962 for my late paternal grandparents, James D. Griffin and Lois Dougherty Griffin when they moved to Holden Beach from Anderson, SC and started Holden Beach Realty Company and ran the islands only post office in the same building. My grandfather, Drew Griffin, was among the founding fathers of the Town of Holden Beach and was the first Mayor Pro-Tem. My father, James (Jim) D. Griffin, Jr., built many homes on the island over a span of 40 years and continues to be instrumental in the conscientious development of Holden Beach.
If you're looking for a high-rise, hi-tech, monstrosity of a beach house that sleeps 4 large families and has 12 bathrooms--you've got the wrong house. This house is old and quaint but evokes the spirit of the beach that so many of the newer homes seem to attempt to re-create but fall very short of the mark.
Early morning coffee and paper on the front porch while watching the waves roll onto the beach, just across the street, is the perfect way to begin the day. A jog down the sidewalk or on the strand with your favorite four-legged family member may be just the thing...whatever activity you choose, 218 Carolina Country, is perfectly situated on second row and ready to accommodate.
Come enjoy the relaxing pace and the realistic old-school beach house experience...meant to bring families together on the island know as 'the Family Beach'.
Ginny was very helpful when I couldn't get the key to work at first even offering to come over with some WD-40. It was nice staying in a house with sheets already on the beds; one less thing to do upon arrival. The house was very comfortable and homey. Nicely situated right across the street from the beach access.
You can't beat the location of this original beach house. It is a close walk to restaurants and bars with excellent beach access directly across the street. If you can't get oceanfront, this is a good next best thing. I also liked how close we were to the bridge as traffic can back up and it seemed preferable to stay on this end of the island for easier access on and off. The house was well appointed and we had everything we needed to cook and make coffee or smoothies. We ate at "home" most of the week. I slept like a baby in the master bedroom, the beds were extremely comfortable and I adore ceiling fans. I had a fractured foot this trip and I was disappointed the back yard was not fenced in as I had anticipated. We brought our two small dogs and it would have been nice to not have to go down the stairs with them each time. However, they loved the front porch and all the action on Ocean Blvd. This was our first experience with Holden Beach and we will definitely be back. The parking situation was also nice, up to three spots right in front. We had only one vehicle, but had plenty of room to store our 2 kayaks. My only complaint, the house was really dusty. It is an older home with a lot more decorations than most. I am used to pet friendly houses not being the newest and cleanest, but I feel it needs a deep dusting and cleaning. All in all, we enjoyed our stay very much and are appreciative of the family opening their home to us.
Loved our visit to Carolina Country, however this unique home could easily be called The Enchanted Cottage! The love and contributions of many family members can be seen in every room. The home has beautiful woodwork and is furnished with whatever the vacationer might need. Maggie our 10 year old English Springer Spaniel loved the beach, which is right across the street. When we brought her back from the beach, we sprayed off her paws in the outside shower and she stayed on the gated porch drying while watching people go by. The sand Spurs were not a problem as she quickly learned to walk around them. Ginnie the owner was a delight and welcomed us as we arrived. I do believe this home is ideal for about 4 people at a time with a pet. The only drawback which did not bother us that much since we were out and about most of the day was the construction noise going on close by. My husband golfed everyday at close by courses. We enjoyed the local seafood and you have to take the kids to Beaches and Cream ice cream. Enjoy!!!
We enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving at Carolina Country. The house was clean, comfortable, and we loved all the unique decorating touches. It was our dog's first trip to the beach - he loved hanging out on the porch and exploring the beach. Sand spurs were an issue - but chalked it up to part of the beach 'experience'. Beach access was right across the street. The yard is no longer fenced but the gated front porch was nice. Convenient to everything Holden Beach has to offer.
Perfect size for our group of 6 adults and 2 dogs. Dog friendly outside of the sand spurs. Great access to the beach and bridge. Clean with pleasant owners.
great quaint cottage, easy access to beach, Owner is great to work with; definitely will be returning again (this was third stay in property)!
