Here at Twin Valley Bed and Breakfast Horse Ranch you can enjoy the adventure of mountain living and the peacefulness of the mountains. Avoid the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in good 'ole fashion country fun! The ranch is built mostly of trees we logged from our mountains giving it the western/rustic feel of days gone by.
Step out of your cabin and hike our many trails, relax on the swing listening to the night sounds and enjoying the stars, hike to the outdoor chapel ,letting the creative juices flow, walk to the barn and help with morning/evening chores. The spring fed pond is great for fishing/swimming, cooking out and roasting marshmallows around the campfire ( plenty of wood to gather) Pavilion includes table/chairs.
Help feed and care for the petting animals which include donkey, fainting goats, lamb, kittens, horses, pot belly pig, rabbits........ride in the back of the pickup with the feed, hay, dog and children and make the rounds! I encourage all the 'hands on time' you can stand! Help with grooming, feeding, saddling and care of the ranch horses before and after each horse ride. All mountains rides are by advance reservations and will be specialized to your interest, age and experience level! I offer Half day rides and day rides which include breaks with drink/snacks. I give instruction when needed and the horse tours include lots of hills, faster riding with those who want to, stories/history of the area, games and a lot of YEEEHAAAs!
We have paddocks with shelters for those who are traveling with their own private horses.

Hello, my name is Janice and I love realizing the dream my late husband and I have created. Being able to meet amazing folks from all over the world and sharing my ranch, horses/critters, mountain riding tips and the joys of mountain living is very rewarding to me. It is so wonderful to be able to say that people come as guests and literally leave as friends! They give as much joy to me as what I try to create for them. When we bought the ranch in 1983, no one had lived here or worked the land for over 40 yrs. Just overgrown land is what we started with. Slowly but surely we cleared, logged, dug trails, built paddocks, barns, cabin and enjoyed the joys of mountains riding! And now myself and the Twin Valley Family wish to show you all the BEST time possible. I have worked several ranches in Co and also have a AAS in Horse Husbandry so I enjoy teaching and sharing my love of horses and the mountains to all.
Janice Tipton purchased this cabin in 1983
We chose to build Lukes Cabin in 1993 on our mountain property because we wanted to be able to accommodate honeymooners or small families who wanted to stay in the mountains without having to worry about people or cars right next door. The location is very private and beautiful but is within an easy walk to the barn/petting animals, horses or pond. The ranch is in Walland which is a short distance from Townsend, giving our guests easy access to the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In the park you can visit Cades Cove, hike, bike, picnic, tubing and enjoy the old homestead historical buildings. Townsend is what we all like to call the 'peaceful side of the Smokys'! Visit the caverns, shops, restaurants, antique shops.......all within a 30 minute drive. Of course, a beautiful mountain drive will get you to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg in about 45 min. The Smoky Mountains have a lot to offer with such a variety of trees, animals and beauty.
You will enjoy being able to walk right out your door and have plenty to do without even getting in your car! Parents love not having to pack up all the children and gear just to go 'do' something. Kittens will greet you and are always ready to entertain the youngsters for hours. Without leaving the ranch, you can hike, ride horses, take lessons, fish/swim, relax in the rockers and be spiritually renewed in the great outdoors! If you feel like playing tourist, there are so many options to choose from, and only 2-25 miles from the ranch. Visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cades Cove, Heritage museum, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Knoxville, Townsend, Tubing, shopping, antiques, shows, caverns, biking........the list of things to do is endless! I will be glad to sit down with you and help you plan your activities....draw maps and give you brochures.
My husband and I stayed in Luke's Cabin, the pet friendly cabin, with our cockapoo. The cabin was charming and clean. Jan matched my riding experience with the perfect horse, Scout. She made sure we all were comfortable and in control of our horses before we left for the mountain trails. Jan made the trail ride extra enjoyable by pointing out wildflowers and trees along the way. After the ride, I helped with the afternoon chores, which I loved. She has many beautiful animals, including goats, a llama, donkeys and minis. I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. Jan puts her heart and soul into it, and you can tell. She treats you like family. We can't wait to go back and enjoy the beautiful scenery and animals again.
Our family was looking for a hands-on vacation with our 2 children, ages 8 and 11. We definitely got that at TVR! We wanted more than just a brush with the horse-experience, chores, etc.,. The description that Jan gives in the overview is very accurate, and the degree of involvement is not limited at all. She encourages the children so much (and Julia, too) that they want to be doing chores every day, and at every opportunity. The kids did NOT want to leave the ranch for 6 days! And, even though guests, we felt like we experienced the rhythm of a real working horse ranch operation. It was a unanimous 10/10 for everyone in our family!
This was a great place for us to stay. I took my two adult daughters (ages 26 & 23) on a horse ranch trip. This was a great choice. We stayed in Luke's cabin which is a log cabin and a bit rustic so it really added to the experience. It was clean and very comfortable as well as air-conditioned. We didn't do much cooking but it had a microwave, stove and coffeemaker which was great. It has a nice porch with a swing seat. It is very quiet and peaceful. Beware-if you feed the cats, as we did, they will be on your doorstep every minute! Janice and Julia prepare breakfast and it was a wonderful start to our days of horseback riding. My daughter still talks about the breakfast. Janice provides excellent horseback riding instruction and the horses are fantastic. We had never done mountain riding before and we all loved it. The farm animals are wonderful; Nutmeg the llama, Dilly the potbelly pig, Monte the donkey, rabbits, chickens, and three nice dogs that took turns accompanying us on trail rides. We also highly recommend river tubing. It was great fun and very relaxing. We definitely want to revisit next year.
was a neat experience had a good horseback ride through the mountains, did think that the price we were charged for breakfast was a little high. We were charged $10.00 a person to eat at the house. Wanted to change dates because we arrived very late at night due to a traffic problem but she stated she was booked did not see many people the entire time we were there.
My husband and I stayed in the Cowboy Hideout, which we found to be very charming, clean and comfortable. It had a great little kitchen stocked with all the cookware and dishes we needed, which was helpful because we cooked several times while we were there.
The Twin Valley Horse Ranch is a destination within itself in the Smoky Mountains. There is enough to do here for a fun family or romantic getaway that you wouldn't have to ever leave the property: hiking, horseback riding on mountain trails, fishing, petting and feeding all the farm animals, cook outs and marshmallow roasting at the pond, relaxing and enjoying the mountain scenery. If you venture off the property, Cades Cove is not far away and is my favorite spot in the GSM National Park. There is also line dancing nearby on the weekends, and Janice will take you with her if you want to go. We went and had a great time even though we are novice dancers.
The best part of our stay was the horse riding. Janice's horses are well trained and she carefully matches the horse to rider based on your skill level. We've done several trail rides in the Smoky Mountains over the years, and riding here is a very different and much better experience. This is real mountain trail riding, where you'll be taught some basic horsemanship if you're a beginner (great for kids) and where you can do more if you're advanced. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you have a chance to "drive," not just sit on a horse who is trained to do nothing more than follow the leader. After the ride, we even got to groom the horses. This was our second time riding here. The first time, we had our two children with us who loved it as much as we did.
Janice, Julia and Nic are very personable and welcoming hostesses who make you feel right at home. Janice was very quick to respond to our request and was helpful in answering our questions.
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a really special place to stay. We can't wait to return!
My husband and I were taking a road trip through Kentucky and Tennessee in October. With no plans, schedule or accomodations - we enjoyed coming upon local surprises! We called for reservation availability and was delighted by Janice's (owner) genuine care and accomodation to make our trip memorable. We were pleasantly surprised by the fair pricing of the accomodations, and were thrilled when we arrived. Everything Janice told us about her property was spot on - and then some! The cabin was charming, clean, decorated with a cowboy theme and the bed was very comfortable. Although we didn't take a horse ride due to visiting the Smokie Mountain Park and departure plans, we joined Janice, her lovely mother and ranch hand, Nik in feeding and grooming the horses. It was a fabulous time! Janice and company really know how to make guests feel welcomed and provide a real ranch experience! With the variety of animals on the ranch, the sweet horses and beautiful landscape, we can't wait to return!
We are between Maryville and Townsend tn. So there is lots to do within a 20 minute drive. Also, Townsend is the entrance to the GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK. A must see. Lots of hiking trails, driving with many pretty pull offs to view the mountains and valleys and of course the Cades Cove driving tour is one of the main attractions.
