Overview

About the property

Studio, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Sapodilla is a charming stone clad cottage situated in a two acre garden on a hillside overlooking Falmouth & English Harbours. The owner built the original house 42 years ago and Sapodilla is her guest cottage set below the pool in a very private part of the garden. The garden is filled with indigenous trees and flowers with many palms and several fish ponds. The palm fringed pool, set away from the main house offers calm and privacy and lovely views. The garden is filled with birds, especially the three varieties of hummingbirds busy working away at the many flowers.

There are wonderful hikes right out of the garden gate. Hiking to Rendezvous Bay is one of Antigua’s five star adventures – from Springhill, you are already en route, and coming home to plunge in the pool and rinse off the salt and grabbing a cold rum punch in your cottage – makes it even more special. The hike takes between 30 – 40 minutes to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, where you are often the only people on the beach! You can hike further to Carlisle bay or Wallings Dam in the rainforest. The owner can organize guides for these longer hikes.

A top class equestrian centre started by the owner is 3 minutes walk down the hill. The centre offers BHS (British Horse society) instruction and trails around the pretty valley and wild beaches. If you like riding and your partner is a sailor (or would like to learn) this is the ideal spot to stay. The owners are very keen sailors, and would be pleased to help organize this.

It is possible to spend a holiday at Sapodilla without a car, but we would recommend renting one. English Harbour is 7 minutes drive away with all its historical sites, great bars and restaurants, and a stunning beach. There are two good supermarkets nearby. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the many beautiful beaches, and other hidden treasures. The owners would be pleased to help you with any information.

Previous guests have all loved the peace and tranquility, and yet the nearness of all the life in English and Falmouth Harbours.

Wonderful memory

We went to antigua to see my son and his friend finish their row across the atlantic. We stayed in Janie's cottage which was in a beautiful quiet spot in her garden. It had fantastic views over Falmouth Harbour and glorious flowers in the garden. It was a delightful little studio cottage with everything you needed all in a small space with a super patio to sit out on to enjoy the view and sunshine. 10 mins drive from Falmouth/English harbour - a perfect spot with a wonderful, friendly caring cottage owner

Tranquility at its finest - Sapodilla Cottage is at one with nature

  • 5 of 5

I have relaxed at Sapodilla Cottage more than on any other holiday I can remember. Great communication beforehand with our lovely host Janie had put me at ease but on arrival my expectations were totally exceeded by the very warm greeting and generous ‘ welcome pack’ of breakfast essentials. Beautifully bijou, the cottage has everything possibly required and is ideal for either a single person or couple. Located off the main road, the cottage sits in an elevated position which gives fabulous views over Falmouth Bay. Relaxing on the verandah, we found ourselves spending a great deal of time enjoying watching the humming birds, colouful finches and lizards surrounding the cottage. We found car hire essential (a jeep is perfect) as the cottage is positioned on a bumpy track off the main road, however it is only less than a ten minute drive to the lively English Harbour with its fabulous selection of bars and restaurants. The king sized bed is protected from insects with a mosquito net - very useful as the cottage is in the middle of lush vegetation. The highlight of our stay was the close company of the birds flying through the cottage in the mornings and we also loved the daily visits from Janie’s lovely dogs. Citronella candles are thoughtfully provided which are ideal to use when enjoying a drink on the verandah before heading out for dinner. We loved the setting of the swimming pool and the amazing pool-side gazebo with fabulous harbour views was really the icing on the cake! The car hire company recommended by Janie, Tipi, made everything very easy - collection at airport, delivered to the cottage and taken to airport at the end of the holiday - perfect! Rendezvous beach is a bit of a hike, it took us 40 minutes (we are very unfit!!) but oh, so worth it! A true ‘castaway’ experience- we almost had the beach completely to ourselves, just one other couple there all day. A really beautiful beach, crashing waves, all very picturesque. We took an umbrella with us which was much needed, and a cool box with picnic lunch, an ideal day out which I look forward to repeating. Sapodilla is such an ideal base for exploring the wonderful island of Antigua but is also well situated for fabulous local beaches, bars and restaurants, all within a very short drive away. A very big thank you to our hosts Janie and Jeffrey. We very much look forward to returning in the near future. Could not have been a better holiday. Suzy & Richard

Secluded Caribbean cottage, set on a very nice property surrounded with natural vegetation.

  • 4 of 5

The abundance of flowers attracted numerous humming birds and other native ave. The vegetation and surroundings provide natural privacy and the pool and veranda deck area are the gem of the property; with a beautiful view of the harbor and lights for evening swims there was no reason to leave the garden studio.

Owner's Response: Dear Nick, Thank you for your kind words. The garden & our beautiful birds are my special delight and sometimes it is hard to get to work when I would rather just sit & observe! I am so happy you felt the same! Do hope you will come again.

A slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

This hideaway is even more beautiful in person! The scenery is to die for and location is near to restaurants and other popular activities in English Habour. We did have to drive through a long dirt road before getting to the cottage and I would recommend a jeep rental to navigate the potholes that are notorious in Antigua. Janie and Jeffery were excellent hosts and we look forward to returning soon!

This is a restful, little piece of heaven on earth.

  • 5 of 5

If you are the kind of frequent Caribbean visitor who shuns the cruise ship hordes and seeks solitude and tranquil beauty, this is your place. We spent ten lovely days at Sapodilla -- only ten minutes' drive from the bustling life of English Harbour with all its "yachties" and the UNESCO heritage site at Nelson's Dockyard, the cottage is nonetheless a secret garden with beautiful flowering trees and bushes abounding, its own swimming pool, squadrons of hummingbirds and Antiguan yellow finches plus delightful hosts who furnish the cottage with all the necessities of a short-term stay (e.g. a kitchen well stocked with initial supplies upon arrival). The restfulness is exquisite. You'll need a car for daily excursions and dinner expeditions. Don't be put off by the bumpy access road -- dodging potholes is Antigua's national sport! We have stayed at about twenty places in the Caribbean and this cottage takes first prize for charm and restfulness. (If you want a small resort with similar tastefulness and charm try Nisbet Plantation on nearby Nevis.) The categories below hardly capture the allure of the place -- this is a destination for people who want to find tranquility below the surface of a place, to ease into its nature and avoid the banality of so much of today's prepackaged tourism. We will return!

Lovely and peaceful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in this little cottage, nestled in paradise ! We didn't meet Jeanne until day three of our trip, due to illness . But her friend, Zoey , handled everything. We had fresh bread, rum, fruit and coffee waiting for us in our cottage! Zoey gave us many suggestions for things to do during our stay. We were so happy when Jeanne was finally feeling better and able to come outside and talk. She is such a warm and friendly person. I think everyone on the island knows her! I could have stayed in that little bit of paradise for a long time! I would definitely recommend anyone stay here as it is such a special place.
