This is a beautiful, very private home copied from a Frank Lloyd Wright design and modified to provide convenience and openness. A terra cotta cinderblock garden wall, matching the house walls, provides privacy on the mountain side, forming a large courtyard and bringing out the beauty of our bougainvillea and other tropical flowers and gardens. The other side of the house and gardens are fenced for pets, including large or small dogs. Relax on our covered lanai with a drink and your loved ones and watch the Kona sunsets over the ocean. Next to the covered lanai is a large deck with a large, rectangular pool and separate hot tub.
We live in an eclectic neighborhood, mostly smaller houses neatly landscaped, one unsightly house, and one millionaire house . From our house you can't see any neighbors because of the privacy walls and landscaping, but if you walk out on the pool deck you can see the millionaire's house.
Our pool is 17' by 34' and just under 5 feet deep with handicapped steps at one end leading to the hot tub and bedrooms. It's solar heated, but on cloudy days can be cool. Pool temperatures range from 74 on a cold day to 86 on a really hot, sunny day, especially in August and September. I swim every morning even in winter when it goes down to 72.
Enjoy the fishing boat activities on the sea below. Look up the coast at the beautiful Kealakekua Bay. Watch the saffron finches and tropical Java sparrows at the bird feeders and listen to the sounds of the Hawaiian doves. Enjoy our 3 bedrooms, carpeted, with 2 king size beds and one double bed, each equipped with dressers and closets. Each bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto pool deck. The master bedroom has 2 closets and a regular door to hallway, while the other two bedrooms have sliding Japanese soji doors. Wood finishing and kitchen counters and cabinets are beautiful, old growth fir from Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Our large main bathroom has a shower big enough to share or to contain a wheelchair, aqua tile floor, and long counter. The large living room has sliding glass doors on both sides to allow the breezes through. The house retains a perfect temperature all day, no fans or air conditioning needed, but on an exceptionally hot day there are ceiling fans in every room. During the cooler evenings we sometimes close the sliding doors on the mountain side. From the bedrooms or the living room you can listen to the garden fountain and watch the birds take baths. There are 55 Macademia nut trees on the 3 acres which is a small, older lava flow. We also have mango trees and citrus. A nut cracker is provided on one of the lanai tables. The large table seats six and we eat dinner out there while watching the sunsets. Our pool is long enough for lap swimming, but wide enough for kids to play in. It is heated with a solar heating system. You can walk out of the house and jump right into the pool. Bathing suits are optional because there is a privacy wall from the neighbors who are far enough away that they couldn't see what you have on anyway.
When you finish your swim, relax in our large, blue hot tub which seats seven, with two jet settings and a little waterfall. You can experiment with the different color lights in the evenings. There is a red cement lanai all the way around the house, providing lots of room for your Scuba and snorkeling gear or pool toys.
Dave and Sally are newly retired teachers. We have taught in the Bay Area in California in a two room school, on Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada, and here in Kona for the last 14 years. We also ran a group home for troubled teens in Victoria for six years. Dave runs a special program at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona for teen age kids who have trouble with the larger campus, and Sally taught at the Elementary level at a private preparatory school in Kona, both in the classroom and PE and Music. We will be dividing our time between our home in Canada and our home here in Hawaii. We hope you enjoy our place.
Keywords: Available May 15-Oct 15. Private house, macademia nut orchard, large lanais and deck, pets welcome. See Calendar for availability
We love to travel, snorkel, and dive. We like having our own boat, but now only have a smaller one in Canada. Our son lives in Victoria, Canada, and was the BC light heavyweight amateur boxing
champion and competed on Team Canada in England. He was also the Golden Gloves champion for Western Canada. He has just retired from boxing and is in his 4th year of university as a Fitness Trainer and Athletic Therapist. Our daughter lives in San Francisco and works for Adobe Software company. Dave and I have 35 years of teaching experience and have also run a group home and taken in therapeutic foster children. We are looking forward to what retirement will bring, but will still be working part time. Currently I have become a Therapeutic Horse Riding Instructor and volunteer working with handicapped children and adults on horses. THH KONA.
Now that we are half retired, we spend 51/2 months in Canada north of Victoria and 61/2 months working in Hawaii. Sally is a substitute teacher and Dave drives school bus for his high school where he taught.
Sally Englund purchased this house in 1988
This is our home for most of the year. It is out in the country and quiet. Also not far from Kailua Kona and near the best snorkeling and Scuba beach. We vacationed here for almost 10 years and then moved over full time 15 years ago. Now that we are retired we plan to be at our place in Canada for 5 months or more.
In 1987 , after spending a year on a teacher exchange in Australia, in the tropics, we decided we wanted to move full time to Hawaii, to the Kona Coast, and a nice realtor helped us find this place.
We really enjoy the pool and hot tub, and the nearby beaches. We love the house and copied plans from a friend who had a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Honolulu. Our driveway goes past another house which is right on the road, It's about 250 feet long and paved. We have solar lights to light your way at night. The driveway has a circle at the bottom to make it easy to turn around.
We spent 10 glorious days at your property and were thrilled with the house and the location. The house had everything we needed and the view was spectacular. We were surprised to find what turned out to be arguably the best snorkeling/diving/swimming with dolphins spot on the Big Island just a few minutes down the road (Honaunau Bay). We loved hanging out by the pool on the lanai watching the sun set in the evenings and in the morning eating papaya from the fruit stand down the road. We had a truly restorative vacation and hope to return soon. Many thanks!!!
The privacy and rural location of the property was just what we needed. The house is roomy and the ourdoor space relaxing. We enjoyed both the pool and hot tub. The rental process was smooth and hassel-free. Thank you Sally!
If you're looking for a place to stay away from other people and soak up some peace and quiet, then this is the perfect spot. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning swims in the pool followed by breakfast on the patio gazing out over the Pacific Ocean. The indoor geckos were friendly and we became fast friends. There was a closet full of family board games that we also enjoyed. The reason we are not able to give the property five stars is due to the lack of cleanliness and the uncomfortable beds. The host graciously refunded the cleaning deposit plus a bit more because the spa was unusable during our stay. Lastly, the host provided her own guide to the island which was full of information that we found extremely helpful.
Overall our stay was a peaceful one, as we had wanted to get away from it all. We had a couple of interruptions, but the owner Sally was very accommodating, even while on vacation herself. The house itself was very comfortable with a very secluded feel. Our family enjoyed the pool and back yard with an unobstructed view of the Kona coast. The peace and quiet was just what we were looking for! Even though you can see right through the house, it still has a very private feel due to the fenced garden on one side and the open cliffs on the other. We especially liked cracking open fresh macadamia nuts and watching all the birds at the bird feeder. The kitchen was well equipped with toaster, microwave, stove and oven and full size fridge. All the utensils cups and plates we could use. Overall it was a very relaxing stay.
Hawai'i was on our dream list and we (2 adults, 11 yo boy and 15 yo girl) stayed at this house during our week on the Big Island in August 2016, so we had high expectations. We became progressively more comfortable with the place as we scanned through the photos, and then interacted with the owner Sally. Our questions were answered in a very welcoming and timely manner, and the information was accurate. For us this place seemed perfect, and it was! Spacious, clean and everything in working order. Overhead fans were great, and in one bedroom the overhead fan was loud but a desktop fan was supplied for comfort, which was fine. The photos on the website were limited, but there are 2 bedrooms side-by-side, then a bathroom, then a master bedroom, all opening into an internal hallway and also patio doors opening onto the pool deck. If you have young children your concern will be that if left unattended they will wander onto the pool deck and into the pool. For us it was perfect. The pool and hot tub were clean and well maintained, and there was a variety of snorkeling gear to use. The view of the ocean was unobstructed and stunning every day - this was a serene oasis after spending the days touring and sightseeing (btw you definitely need to rent a car if you rent this house). The owner provided important and accurate information to guide us on the island, this was very much appreciated. The lovely gardens and friendly geckos (inside and out) added a warm feeling to the home. Tiny ants were seen in the kitchen so everything edible went into the fridge, but this is common in Hawai'i and we'd prefer that over pesticide use. Love the sound of the frogs at night! Boogie boards were left for us to use and we kept them in the car just in case we found a beach, very handy. We would definitely recommend this home for people who love nature, serenity, access to the natural wonders in the area, and we will definitely return if we make it back to the island. Extraordinary is the right word to summarize our stay in this beautiful home. We were there ( a family of 5 ) from 25 of july to 2 of august 2016 and we really appreciated. The house is super comfortable, the breathtaking view; really nice pool and spa. The owner is very accomodative. The localisation is perfect. We wholeheartedly recommend this rental.
This home has a beautiful view from the pool deck (lava rock, with a distant view of the water), and a wealth of surrounding tropical foliage and birds. The house itself is rustic, with a cement shower in the main bathroom, plentiful roaches (in the kitchen and living room particularly); and beds and carpet badly in need of replacement. We cut our stay short due to the beds and roaches. When we shared the reasons for our early departure with the owner, she was apologetic and said she would look into the situation and even refund a few nights of our rental fee. She later followed up to let us know that her housekeeper and the exterminator checked on the house, couldn't find any evidence of roaches, and that the beds seemed fine also. We didn't receive the refund that was offered. The owner seems like a very nice person, but from this experience, we suspect there is a certain amount of denial about the condition of this home. The exterminator claims that "mainlanders" like us don't understand about roaches in a tropical climate, but we live in Florida and are very familiar with the signs of roach infestation. Beyond dealing with the roaches, our backs couldn't withstand the condition of the bed in the master bedroom. With a little bit of TLC, this could be a wonderful vacation home.
