Based in San Francisco we travelled to Nicaragua to catch some waves after reading about the small town of San Juan del Sur in 2003.
It was reminiscent of villages in Mexico 25 years ago, unaffected, natural, the people warm and friendly. We rented a truck and off we went up and down the coast line of Nicaragua in search of the best waves. We checked out every possible spot for miles but always returned back to the surrounding area of San Juan del Sur.
We finally settled on Balcones de Majagual which afforded us an Architecturally stunning home in a private ecological reserve within walking distance to one of the premier surf beaches Maderas. It's proximity to San Juan located only 20 minutes away gave us the option for a little night life and great restaurants if we so desired. ........We've been here ever since!
The Owner purchased this house in 2006
What a wonderful treat to stay at Casa Culebra for a few days before Christmas. Elisha, my sister who does concierge service for the property, has told me how special this place is and I was certainly not disappointed. The home super exceeded any expectations! Suzi has outdone herself in furnishing and stocking the house. You’ll find everything you need for a great holiday plus more. The property is beautiful, the architecture & woodwork stunning and I loved the open air living feel the house has. Waking up to the sound of howler monkeys as I lay in the big comfy bed and watched the trees blow in the wind is a memory of my Nicaragua trip that I will never forget.
During our stay we visited 2 of the nearby beaches, Majagual and Maderas. Both are beautiful & quiet – hard to believe this area isn’t crowded with hordes of tourists yet. I highly recommend stopping for lunch at Gaby’s Bar – the ceviche & whole fried fish plate was delicious. We enjoyed afternoon swims at Casa Culebra also – the lush jungle & views surrounding the infinity pool are awesome. We even got a show from the monkeys playing in the trees overhead one day.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. If anyone has safety concerns you can feel assured you will be well taken care of at Casa Culebra. When we had a power outage one evening, the security staff were at our door within minutes to explain the problem & assist with starting the battery back up system which is located in the bodega.
I highly recommended this vacation rental to anyone looking for a quiet place to relax, a cool pool to dip in and a beautiful country to explore. Thanks so much for everything Suzi. We sure hope to be back someday soon.
Casa Culebra served as the perfect setting for our worry-free girls’ getaway! The house offered just the right amount of relaxation, adventure, and luxury.
For those of you wondering…yes, the pictures are on point when it comes to the clean and comfortable accommodations you expect to see upon arrival. However, keep in mind what you can’t see that takes the experience to a whole new level.
The sunrise and sunset views from this house (and throughout the property) were breathtaking, and the infinity pool quickly became part of our sunset ritual. Elisha, our concierge, truly served as our Ambassador! She was beyond helpful when it came to booking excursions or simply offering ‘life in Nica’ advice. This gave us the feeling of being on vacation, but also gave us a little taste of the local scene.
We enjoyed 2 evenings in with Chef Adam, which I highly recommend….not only was he a whiz in the kitchen, but he offered comedic commentary in between courses. We also took advantage of surf lessons with Baldo (he should get an award for patience), which was an incredible experience….especially for those of us that surfed for the first time and GOT UP! Last and certainly not least, the groundkeepers and security of the property were very attentive. It was comforting to know that if and when we needed something, they were nearby and promptly provided assistance.
I highly recommend a stay at Casa Culebra, and can say without a doubt, that I am looking forward to a return visit in the (hopefully near) future.
My family and friends had a great time at this house, the views were amazing and waking up to sounds of monkeys was the best. You will need a 4x4 to get here , but the tough trail is worth it. I would watch out for the spiders and scorpions in the house, as we seen them almost daily for 2 weeks we were there. Overall a great experience , Gordon and Elisha were always there to answer any questions and lend a helping hand.
Casa Culebra was far beyond what we expected for our holiday!!! We will definitely return to Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur and Balcones de Majagual:)
The Remax folks in town set us up with Francesco (he is a gem!!!!) to pick us up from the airport and drive our rental car out to San Juan. Upon arrival, we stopped in to the Remax office where were we greeted and promptly toured around town. It was perfect AND we had a chance to pop in to stock up on goodies for our first breakfast.
Upon arriving at Balcones we were again reminded that we were in good hands. The staff are incredible and make you feel welcome and safe at all times. We were given the tour of our house - and it was far beyond our expectations! Far bigger than we thought, spotless and with TONS of kitchen bits & bobs.
Our 11 days were perfect. Truly. (ok fine, we had to kill a scorpion but really whatddya expect? it is the jungle after all but we will just add that to the list of life experiences in our back pocket!)
But really, this place was a slice of heaven. The house, the beaches, the kind people, the food - it was awesome. At any time, we felt we could contact the Remax folks in town for any support or with any questions.
I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking to have a great holiday with the opportunity to stay in the beauty of the jungle.
Our expectations were exceeded! After a long winter we could hardly wait to arrive in San Juan Del Sur. We were met by Elisha and Gordon with groceries and cold beer. Not a bad way to start vacation. After Elisha and Gordon gave us the scoop on the local culture/restaurants/beaches etc. we headed to the house. The drive from town to the house was about 30 mins. It gives you plenty of time to appreciate the unique geography of San Juan. We highly recommend a 4x4 like Suze mentioned. The hill up to the house can be steep.
The house was more than amazing; we were able to relax immediately. The design of the home provides for a very tranquil environment. The view was spectacular and serene. (For those of you worried about AC, it is not needed. You will catch cool breezes from the ocean all night.)
There is a private road to the beach; we were typically two of ten people on the beach. There is also a beautiful pool available but we gravitated towards one of the many beaches most of the time.
We also felt incredibly safe. Security is available 24/7. We had a few late nights and security was always there to greet us.
If you appreciate wildlife and bird watching this would be a great option. The howler monkeys were fun to watch in the trees and wake up to in the morning.
My husband and I have traveled to many tropical places and vacation rentals are our preference. We would highly recommend Casa Culebra, not only because Elisha, Gordon and Suze were SO incredibly helpful but the home is absolutely amazing.
Elsiha, Gordon and Suze, thank you again for an unforgettable experience in SJDS! Cheers!
My husband and I just returned from spending 8 nights at Casa Culebra. It was a fabulous experience for so many reasons. First, we were met by the Concierge, Elisha McKay, in town to review contracts, house information, etc. Then Elisha took us around the town of San Juan del Sur pointing out restaurants, markets, and shops that we might want to go to. This was all invaluable information to have. Also, Elisha had shopped for groceries for us, so that our first night and morning, we would be set up in the house. We picked up our 4-Wheel Drive Land Cruiser from John at Classic Cruiser Nicaragua and followed Elisha out to Casa Culebra. It was a challenging drive the first couple times -- no doubt about it -- but we greatly appreciated Elisha escorting us and bringing us into the property. The house is amazing. You just cannot get a sense of how wonderful it is from the photos. There is breeze coming from all over, so not only do you not need air conditioning, but we even had to put a blanket on at night. It was a wonderful place to be. We cooked most of our meals there --- picking up fish from the fish markets recommended by Elisha --- and bread from Pura Vida Bakery -- yum! Fruit and vegetables from the market in town also recommended by Elisha. We had everything we needed to cook in the kitchen. I think it makes a difference that this isn't just rental house..the owner also uses it, so you can see the care she takes in furnishing it. We were treated to wake up calls from the monkeys and a great variety of birds. I appreciated having the binoculars available at Casa because we forgot ours. It was great to have the pool too. We loved the beaches close by and also adventured out to a few south of SJDS. We will be back to Casa Culebra!
What an amazing place this is. The most fantastic house in a wonderful hill top location. We have just come back from a 2 week stay here (family of 4 with kids aged 9 and 11) and we have fallen completely in love with the house, the beach, San Juan Del Sur and Nicaragua in general. The house is super comfortable with a wonderful cool breeze coming through all the time due to the very clever construction. We loved all the wildlife that you can find here, fantastic birds and the monkeys howling outside are amazing. Very primal. A nature lovers paradise.
The house provides a great base to explore this area but you may find that you are so relaxed, you don't fancy going far. AND you don't need to. The beach at Majagual is superb with lovely food and the best Pina Coladas available on the beach from Juanita's kitchen. If you're looking for some adventure, the canopy tour was a real hit with the kids and the surf is fantastic. We also went out on a local fishing trip which was awesome. We caught a huge dorado and lucked out by seeing a whale surface about 20meters from our boat. Incredible!
The owner, Suze was brilliant and told us everything we needed to know before we got there. This took all the stress out of travelling with the kids and meant we were up and running straight away. Our concierge, Elisha, was also great and always available to answer any questions we had straight away.
We would definitely come back to Nicaragua and would definitely stay here again. Totally smitten!
