About the Property
Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 1.25 Baths, (Sleeps 6)
This quaint home is located in a quiet, wooded, and family oriented neighborhood of Davis Park. Perfect for the vacationing family or small group of friends looking for a quiet get-away. Not a party house.
Enter this wood-paneled mid-century bungalow through the screened sun room. In the center of the layout are the spacious living room and kitchen with bar-stool seating. The three bedrooms are located on the ocean side of the house and the bathroom with shower is centrally located opposite the bedrooms. The main bedroom has a queen bed. The middle and back bedrooms each have two twins whereas the back bedroom has two additional kid-sized bunk beds.
Fire Island is easily accessed from New York City by the Long Island Railroad (1.5 hrs). A 5-minute taxi ride from the train station runs to and from the ferry terminal. Alternatively, flights can be arranged to the town of Islip on Long Island which is a 30-minutes from the ferry. Access to the island is via ferry boat.
The fact that Davis Park is a car-free community makes this a truly unique vacation experience. Transportation on the island is by foot via boardwalks that connect the community.
Occupants of the cottage must arrange to bring their own food, supplies, bed linens and towels. A small grocery store at the marina provides the basics (milk, bread, juice, etc). However, large orders of groceries are best arranged on the mainland. Alternatively, internet orders for delivery to the island can be prearranged with some larger supermarkets. And, if you like to enjoy fine dining on occasion, there is also an oceanside restaurant and bar located near the marina.
What is the Fire Island experience? You choose to what suits your liking on a day-by-day basis. The beautiful white-sand beaches stretch for 15 miles in either direction from the house. If you are active, short and longer hikes are on the "to do" list. The Fire Island National Seashore operates a nature center within walking distance. Here, rangers lead day and occasional evening programs for young and old to learn about the island's natural history.
The beach is always inviting to sunbathers, swimmers, surfers, and fishers alike. The Atlantic Ocean offers a refreshing chance for a dip or longer ocean-style swim. Striped bass, weakfish, and bluefish are commonly hooked from the shore and can provide a tasty island-style dinner when landed.
Also on the oceanside of the island, beachcombers can be seen scanning the sand or unusual pieces of beach glass, driftwood, or beautiful rocks and shells. The beach is also a great place to practice yoga and weekly classes are currently offered in Davis Park.
The bay offers a variety of water activities and rounds out the Fire Island experience. People wade and float in its shallow warm waters looking for crabs and clams to eat. Ducks, swans and other migratory birds can be seen on the bay. The bay is great place for windsurfing, boating, and sailing. And, if you're very ambitious, you can travel via water taxi to one of the surrounding communities and enjoy a movie, some fine dining, music and dancing.
Whatever you choose to do, once settled-in with friends and family and provisioned for your stay, take a few deep breaths and let your body and mind acclimate to the island life. You will be happy you did.

Year Purchased: 1950
About the owner: I grew up spending my summers on Fire Island. This is where I first learned to swim in the ocean, fish, clam, crab, and use a boat. I have no doubt that these early experiences instilled an appreciation for nature and thus inspired me to become a science teacher. Now, a third-generation owner of our family home, I enjoy returning every summer to meet relatives while introducing my son to the beauty of Fire Island. I also enjoy renting our home to others who can come to appreciate such a unique meeting of land and sea.
Why the Owner Chose Davis Park, Fire Island, NY, USA:
My grandparents built this beach cottage in the 1950's. Our family has been meeting here every summer to enjoy this "special place" together ever since.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Each family member or friend has their own way of enjoying Fire Island. For all it is a time to wind down and reflect on what is really important in life. Some enjoy walking the miles of picture-perfect white-sand beaches to remote coves or connecting communities. Others enjoy painting, collecting beach glass, shells or unusual shapes of driftwood. My wife enjoys reading a long book and practicing yoga. And almost everyone can be found relaxing on the beach in the warm sun taking cooling dips in the turquoise sea. I like to start my FI mornings early fishing in the surf for striped bass, weakfish, or bluefish. Even when I don't get a bite, the empty beach, sunrise, and feel of sand on my feet are ample rewards. While it's still cool, I take a jog on the boardwalk to Watch Hill; a national seashore marina with a nature center and ranger-led tours. After my jog, I enjoy a cooling swim in the ocean then join my family on the beach for some fun in the sun. Come evening time, I like to wade in the shallow bay to catch some crabs or clams for dinner while taking in the amazing sunsets.
