About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Situated on the edge of Big Bonne Bay Pond and Gros Morne National Park our 1800 sq foot beachfront vacation house offers beautiful views of the lake, rolling hills and wildlife. While houses are on either side of the property, large trees keep the house secluded.

The property is situated on the very edge of Gros Morne National Park with a large ecological preserve just outside your master bedroom. Opportunities exist to watch moose, ducks and other wildlife while sitting on your deck or in the vast gardens soaking up the fresh air while having your morning coffee. When you have finished your coffee take a stroll along the beach and have a look for tracks to see if you had any moose visit you overnight.

Exploring Gros Morne national park is a geographically challenged task. Our home is situated in the middle of the park, 40 minutes from the Tablelands Mountains and 1 hour from Western Brook pond. Being centrally located is perfect to head out for your daily adventures.

The House is equipped with all the amenities you will need for your stay. Use the fully equipped oak kitchen to prepare your food however you like it. With a fish plant and full grocery facilities nearby you’ll have lots of opportunity to enjoy fresh lobster, cod and all kinds of ocean treats. We have a lobster pot and outdoor propane cooker at the house so you can enjoy a traditional outdoor lobster feast. If you need more supplies for the house a corner store is only 5 km away and the City of Deer Lake is only a short 15 minute drive.

There are 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a Queen bed with large windows overlooking the lake and the ecological preserve. The second bedroom has a Queen bed. The third bedroom has two twin beds. There is additional sleeping possibilities in the finished basement. We have a king size air matress that can be split into 2 twins. Otherwise the large leather sectional couch can even add another sleeping location. Sheets and pillows are provided for the air matress.

At the end of the day there are several choices to relax. A campfire in the stone fire pit will allow you to reflect on your days adventures while you roast some marshmallows and look at the stars. There is also a 7 person, 80 jet, 3 waterfall deluxe salt water hot tub to help soothe your muscles after a day of hiking, snowmobiling, boating, four wheeling or whatever adventures your day entailed.

If the weather decides not to cooperate our house is equipped with lots of activities. The basement is fully furnished with a Plasma TV, Satellite HD receiver, air hockey table, DVD player, movies, books, satellite internet and board games.

Every season offers a reason to return to the Chateau. Whether its snowmobiling on the number one rated trail in the world, ice fishing, four wheeling, sea doing, boating, hiking or just relaxing with a book in the fresh air , a stay at Chateau Shady Loop offers it all.

About Jen and Joel

My wife Jen and I grew up in Ontario and have 2 boys. Jen is a Registered nurse and I am a business executive. We are both big foodies and we love seafood. I love the outdoors and enjoy salmon fishing and hiking. We currently live in Ontario.

Jen and Joel purchased this house in 2011

Why Jen and Joel chose Division No. 9, Subd. A

We love Newfoundland. After 20 years of being a tourist in Newfoundland we decided to call it home! We were married in Newfoundland and have seen just about every corner of the island. The property was perfect for us. It is not far from the fish plant, the park, a lake, the airport and amenities in Deer Lake. The park is 2.5 hours across so the location of Chateau Shady Loop right in the middle of route across the park is perfect. We are big fans of Winter activities as well. Chateau Shady Loop averages 14 feet of snow in the winter and is only 50 min from Marble mountain for downhill skiing. We love everything about Chateau Shady Loop. We love sharing it with others so they can experience the beauty of Newfoundland, the people and the great outdoors.

What makes this house unique

When we stay in Shady Loop there are so many things we enjoy doing. Certainly taking in the fresh air, the sky FULL of stars and walking the beach are fovorites of ours. We LOVE seafood, so having the fish plant and proper grocery access nearby makes for OUTSTANDING meals.

Having Gros Morne national park only a few kilometres away makes for outstanding day trips. Whether it is out looking for moose, off hiking a mountain, or taking a walk at the tablelands - there is just so much to do!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a beautiful stay at Chateau Shady Loop! The view was breath taking and after our hike up Gros Morne Mountain, the hot tub was a great help!

One of our best stays ever!

  • 5 of 5

Everything was great! Directions were spot on, no issues with the door lock code, and once inside, extremely well equipped.

The views were fabulous. We'd start each morning with a coffee on the deck overlooking the water, and then start our adventures. The hot tub was a welcome addition to soothe our aches after a day of hiking in Gros Morne.

Weather was great, very sunny and the only thing we wished for was a way to open the awning to give us a bit of shade. All in, would definitely return, and if you're looking for a well equipped, well situated home base for your adventures, this is it.

Wonderful home, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The home was perfect for our family. It was so close to Gros Morne! The kids were disappointed that there was no air hockey table, but there were plenty of other things to do. The hot tub was wonderful after hiking the Tablelands during the day and it was fun watching the beavers and ducks in the pond just outside the window. It was difficult to leave, wish we had stayed two more days even though we woke up to snow on the day we left.

Sunsets, hottub, and moose...

  • 5 of 5

A perfect location from which to explore Gros Morne: we headed out to Trout River one day, to a Bonne Bay boat tour the next day, and to Western Brook Pond the final day...returning each evening to Bonne Bay Pond and brilliant pink and purple sunsets viewed from the hottub. This property is wonderfully quiet, with nothing but the sound of birds in the morning and frogs on the pond in the evening...and our final morning we looked out the window to see a moose out in the marsh! Kitchen is quite well equipped for preparing a few meals in, though given the amazing seafood in the area, could use a few lobster implements (we used our hands, sheer determination, and a few bandaids...) Plastic wine glasses for use in the hottub are a great touch! Thanks for sharing this lovely spot with us.

Hot Tub was outstanding. House could use a little maintenance.

  • 3 of 5

We rented for the hot tub and the view and it met our expectations. The house does need some general maintenance. Dishwasher took some time to figure out. Large tv in basement was excellent.

Car: necessary

Chateau Shady Loop is in the ideal location to explore Western Newfoundland. Its tough to tell from a map, but there is a lot of land to cover. Gros Morne National Park is 2.5 hours to travel from side to side, so if you are not in the right location you can spend a lot of time driving versus exploring. Amenities are very important if you plan on doing your own cooking. Chateau Shady Loop is only 15 minutes from full grocery stores vs. have a kitchen, but minimal access to supplies once you get further from Deer Lake.

There is so much to see and do from Chateau Shady Loop. Every season offers different activities. In the summer there is great hiking trails to explore. Gros Morne national park has amazing hiking trails. There are trails for all abilities. The two toughest are Green Gardesn and a full day hike up gros morne mountain. After these hikes you will be very glad the hot tub is awaiting you at our Chateau. There are many other hikes all within a 45 minute drive that will leave you debating which trails to do.

In the Winter Chateau Shady Loop transforms into a Winter Wonderland. With an average snowfall of 14ft there are no limits to the adventures you can have. Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing are sure to keep you busy.

If you are a fisherman there is trout fishing all around in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. You can get a guide and fly fish for Salmon outside the park and you get your own tag inside the park (contact park for details). If you want to deep sea fish for cod there are charters within 30-60 minutes of the Chateau.

The beach at Chateau Shady Loop is a great place for a swim. The sandy beach is a rare find on the island and can make for a relaxing day, or a place to explore.

There is lots of wildlife in the area. The park has thousands of moose and a herd of caribou, both of which have made the occasional visit to shady loop. Be careful driving at night, especially inside the park.
