About this property

Hickory Shores Wildlife Preserve. Kayak, fish, hike, bike trail & wineries.

Hickory Shores
Scenic waters, private shorelines adjoining 5-mile-long Lake Roaming Rock

In 1955 when my family bought our 180-acre farm, there were Shagbark Hickory trees lining both shores of a rock-filled stream. Years later the 550-acre Lake Roaming Shores was created from damming our stream and Hickory Shores became the wildlife-filled headwaters. Bald Eagles, foxes, river otters, ospreys, beaver and deer are frequent visitors to our farm along with other water birds and wildlife.
Recreational opportunities are plentiful including fishing in the headwaters and also our 1/2-acre pond, paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking. The 50-mile Western Reserve paved hike and bike trail is 1 1/2 miles away and other adjoining roads create unlimited quiet country rides and walks. in 2023 we added a 3/4-mile wooded trail along the shores of the waters with lookouts and 27 numbered stops. A printed interpretive guide is provided to guests. Benches along the way provide quiet spots to rest or picnic. Approximately 2.50 miles of well-maintained trails are located at Hickory Shores.
Hickory Shores is a great base camp to visit 32 wineries in Ashtabula County, with the closest located 8 miles away. We are centrally located to many others within a 20-mile radius. Many of the wineries offer entertainment and food with local musicians and bands often scheduled to play.
Nineteen covered bridges dot the landscape of Ashtabula County. The longest covered bridge in the United States is in our county as well as the shortest, just spanning 18 feet. The shortest, West Liberty Bridge in Geneva, was actually built by my husband Jack and his carpentry class at the Ashtabula County Vocational School (now called A-Tech).
Both Lake Erie and Lake Pymatuning are short drives from Hickory Shores and provide additional recreational opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, and sightseeing. Spectacular sunsets, a quiet country paved road, campfires, stargazing and Amish buggies passing by await your visit to Hickory Shores. In season our visitors often share in the bounty of our blueberry and raspberry patches, apple orchard, or vegetable harvest. Snowy winters provide opportunities for cross country skiing, snowshoeing or hiking on our farm trails or utilizing groomed trails at Girdled Road Reservation in Hambden Township (19 mile drive).

Lifejackets must be worn at all times when boating or paddleboarding and a liability waiver must be signed by all boaters or parents for minors.
We do not provide paddleboards, but guests may bring their own.
Paddlers may continue into Lake Roaming Rock. State of Ohio registration is required on all boats using the lake. Because it is a private lake, the shores, beaches, and pools are not for use by guests of Hickory Shores. Both shores south of the RT 6 bridge, however, are owned by Hickory Shores and open to guests for fishing or hiking. These shores adjoin approximately 6 /10s of a mile of navigable waters running through the property.
Fishing can be done at both the 1/2-acre farm pond and in the headwaters of the 550-acre lake (state license required for those 16 and older). We do not allow fishing from swim rafts.

Biking and Hiking:
Several convenient entrances to the 50-mile paved Western Reserve Greenway biking and hiking trail are located near Hickory Shores. The closest is 1 1/2 miles away on Rt 6. A quieter ride via Dodge and Dodgeville roads is 2 1/2 miles away or the Calendar Road entrance is located at 3 1/2 miles.
We have brochures and maps available in the farmhouse detailing the bike trail, local wineries and the numerous covered bridges in the area. As avid bicyclists, we can offer many routes utilizing both the trail and local country roads, with wineries and bridges as destinations.
Hickory Shores has a network of well-maintained and marked hiking trails. The Hickory Shores Interpretive trail, combined with an optional loop, is 3/4 of a mile long. There is an interpretive guide available describing 27 marked stops. Two other trails, the Pond Loop (.83 miles) and the Rainbow Falls to Sunshine Falls Loop (.69 miles) provide options for family strolls. These trails supply many stream vistas and opportunities to view wildlife. Bald Eagle, foxes, deer, river otters, ground hogs, waterfowl and songbirds have all been spotted along these trails.
There are maps with detailed directions for each of these 3 loops. These trails have been designed with enough width to snowshoe and cross-country ski. If visiting Hickory Shores in winter, we can also offer information on local parks with groomed trails for both skate and classic skiing.

Charming Nostalgia
My four sisters and I, ranging from ages 64 to 74, stayed here for our annual Sisters Trip Get-Away. This charming farmhouse has everything you could possibly need from spare Qtips, to a wine cooler. Fully stocked kitchen, comfortable and cozy furnishings, peaceful decor, perfect mattresses, colorful fresh flowers everywhere, and the nicest, friendliest owners you’ll ever meet! Highly recommend this house to all nature lovers, and groups who just want to spend time with each other. Loved it.

Things to keep busy
Our stay was short due to work schedules but we all enjoyed our stay. Marcia made sure to show us through the house and go over a few things about the property. Even though we did not have the time to enjoy the pond, and hiking we would have loved to do so. Since we were staying to go to the Lake Erie lake medieval faire, which was literally, less than 10 mins away. We had our 4 children come ages ranging 4-12. We played the board and card games provided and had a small fire in the firepit for s,more's later in the evening. Our kids had free range of the grounds and ran all over. Not once did they complain that they wanted to go home or were bored. Jack even brought us over cherry tomatoes from their garden. Definitely was warm and inviting. I always get some anxiety because of having children with us but Marcia even told us that if the kids wanted to visit them(which they live across the road) and play with their dogs they could. We forgot to sign the guest book, as we got 30 minutes away I remembered. Thank you for allowing us to stay!

Not Enough Great Things To Say!
We cannot express how wonderful this property is and the amazing owners (Marcia & Jack). Decorated with lots of charm and the attention to detail with fresh flowers everywhere, welcome basket, all of the essentials you need to stay. The location was peaceful and quiet, complete with a beautiful walking trail on the owner's property (just across the street) and trail guides. Marcia put a lot of thought into the printed trail guide "stations" along the wood-chipped trail. They also have a beautiful garden with a huge variety of fruits and veggies in which we were welcomed to. The house was immaculately clean and decorated with lots of love! We had seven ladies (AKA-"Divas") for an all-girls weekend and we had an absolute fabulous time. We visited Los Venados, a Mexican restaurant, which had very yummy food with a great waiter. We also visited a little farm market and Laurentia winery at the suggestion of the owners. The winery had the best food and a breath-taking view (we sat outside). There is just not enough things to say about this place and the owners. I truly appreciated their interactions and they were very personable. We truly were blessed with such a beautiful place to stay for our girls weekend and hope to visit again soon!

Hickory Shores
We had a wonderful stay at Hickory Shores. The house is just beautiful. It is obvious that Marcia and Jack have done a lot of work to it. It was so comfortable and welcoming. Marcia and Jack are generous and gracious hosts. They have so many extras available between games and water activities. They are kind and lovely people. I really enjoyed meeting them and wish we could be neighbors longer.

On the list of places to stay again!
My husband and I were lucky enough to find this gem in the path of totality, and we got more than just a great viewing location! Jack and Marcia have worked so hard on the old farmhouse to maintain the history, along with the beautiful, secluded setting, and provide modern comforts. Every detail inside the house has been thought out and is absolutely beautiful. Jack and Marcia were so welcoming as our hosts and it was very clear they would help and provide anything if we just asked. The extra little goodies they provided gave such a special touch, unlike any experience I’ve had with our many stays across the country. Groceries are no more than a half hour drive, or if you prefer, there are lots of little restaurants 5-15 minutes away. I’m going to give a little breakfast joint, Mugs, a shoutout here too, because they had some of the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Which brings me to the coffee bar back in the farm house. There is everything you could need or want for tea or coffee, fully stocked. Both mornings of our two full days there, I woke up before my family and sat in the room off the kitchen enjoying a good cup of coffee, watching the little bird feeder attached to the window. I wish we had more time, and although my husband and I have traveled to nearly all of the lower 48, this location is at the top of our list to revisit. Marcia and Jack, thank you for opening your home to us! We will be back! Now I just need some more of those white choc blueberry cookies!
