About Frank Albinder

I'm a classical musician who's lived in Washington DC for more than 13 years. It's a great city in so many ways, I'm glad I can share my basement apartment with visitors from around the world. I live in the main house above the apartment, so I'm easily available to assist guests with their visits in the national's capital.

Frank Albinder purchased this apartment in 2002

Why Frank Albinder chose District of Columbia (Washington DC)

I love my neighborhood with its historical townhouses and apartment buildings, restaurants, shops and nearby public transportation. Though in the heart of Washington, the apartment is in a residential neighborhood populated with a wide variety of residents, including young Congressional and White House staffers, young families, couples and singles from all over the world. (Few people in DC are actually from DC!) One of the coolest things about where I live is the giant Masonic House of the Temple, located right across the street from the apartment. The building was designed by John Russell Pope, architect of the Jefferson Memorial and the National Archives, and it's one of the most impressive buildings in Washington. It serves as the Southern Headquarters for the 33rd degree of Scottish Rite Masonry, and a tour of the building is fascinating and entertaining. If you're a Dan Brown fan, the building plays a pivotal part in his novel, 'The Lost Symbol.'

The Best Solution to getting away alone

  • 5 of 5

Although this property will accommodate many more, I wanted a quiet, safe, warm place to stay for a week all by myself for my 85th birthday present. It was all of that plus it was in the best location for walking to restaurants and beginning each day with new discoveries of the city. The landlord was charming and responsive to requests and I never felt without help if I needed it.

Great place to stay in DC

  • 5 of 5

Frank had the apartment ready with a book full of suggestions, directions, even menus of neighborhood eateries. Easy walking to grocery and metro. Would stay again on return trip to DC.

Stop looking, this is your place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Clear instructions from Frank every step of the way (this was our first Home Away experience). The apartment was very clean, cozy and perfect for our needs. You do not need to rent a car for your trip if you plan on staying in the city. Easy walk to the U Street Metro. Great places to eat in the area, and a few boutiques to shop at! Like others, we shopped at Trader Joes for breakfast items and a dinner to make at the apartment. If we ever make it back to DC, I am requesting this place again!

Fabulous Location, Beware of Mosquitos!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was wonderful! It was a convenient 10-min walk to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods as well as plenty of eateries and shops on streets nearby; the basement has a great location. Though we didn't use the SmarTrip cards available, the nearest Metro stop is only a ~15 min walk away. We appreciated the washer and dryer to freshen up our clothes along the trip; just make sure you follow the directions and don't shower while they're running. Frank was incredibly responsive to all of my messages, even coming by in person to troubleshoot when the TV channels didn't work.

Some words of caution: If you are a light sleeper or sensitive to sleeping cushions, the couch bed in the living room does make a bit of noise and might be lumpy for some. During the time of year we went (early Sept), beware of mosquitoes! We're newbies to the East Coast and did not bring bug spray - all members of our party were bit before we had a chance to go to the store! Although Frank did provide a can of bug spray for the room and a quirky list of instructions on the wall, come prepared!

If we return to DC with a small party, we would definitely keep Frank's quaint basement in mind as a lodging option!

We really enjoyed staying at this charming place. Everything we needed and more is there for you.Plenty of towels.Neat and clean. Very safe, lovely neighborhood. Enjoyed our walk to the White House. Trader Joe's was a short walk on 14 th St. We used Uber to get around town. Also enjoyed taking the Trolley. The drivers are full of information, and very entertaining! Would recommend this place. It was a great place to introduce us to life in DC!
