About the property

Excellent value self-catering chalet with veranda, private garden and parking

Chalet Pic Rouge is a traditional Alpine chalet-style rental in a quiet and scenic site at the foot of Mt. Blanc in the Chamonix Valley. Located in Les Houches, the chalet is just an hour's drive from Geneva Airport, 3 minutes walk from the Le Tourchet beginners' ski lift and 1.2 km from Bellevue cable car and the main Les Houches ski area.

The tastefully decorated character chalet is 150m from shops and restaurants. It is the end chalet in a terrace of 4 adjoining properties with private drive and parking. It is away from the main road in a peaceful residential area, where local families live year round. It offers a traditional Savoyarde atmosphere with access to 5 top ski areas in winter and hundreds of hiking & biking trails in summer.

The property is compact but well-equipped and having two bathrooms is a bonus. The chalet can accommodate up to 7 guests but in winter 5 or 6 are a more comfortable number. In summer the veranda offers extra outdoor dining and seating space.

There is one double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor with the possibility to add a folding single bed if you want to use this bedroom as a twin. There is one twin bedded room (+ folding bed) upstairs in the loft under the eaves and 2 single beds on the mezzanine. There are no bunk beds but please note the loft ceiling height is a maximum 166 cm (5ft 4ins) so adults need to stoop upstairs. Children love the upstairs and have their own play space and DVD player up there. Access to the upper floor is by a spiral staircase and the mezzanine sleeping area has a balcony open to the lounge.

All beds have duvets and pillows and mattress and pillow protectors which are regularly laundered.

The chalet has 2 bathrooms (one with shower and one with small bath), a new kitchen and a lounge/dining room opening to a private south and west-facing garden. The house is generously equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, flat-screen TV (Bluray /dvd only), free wifi and Bose Soundtouch speaker so you can play your own music from your phone, tablet or laptop.

The kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of quality pans, plates, bowls, glassware and cooking utensils. It has an under the counter fridge with proper freezer compartment, a dishwasher, microwave, liquidiser, electric mixer, stove-top expresso machine, French press coffee maker, toaster, electric kettle, fondue set and raclette set.

The lounge has a dining table seating 6, a comfortable 3-seater corner sofa and a couple of soft chairs. Books, maps and a selection of DVDs are for guests' use. There are also a few games for children and adults.

The enclosed and gated garden has fruit trees and shrubs, flower beds and tubs and is mostly laid to gravel. There is outdoor seating and dining and in summer the chalet gets sun during the morning, afternoon and evening. The timber-decked veranda gets morning sun and fabulous sunset mountain views and there is a seating area at the front of the house to enjoy the evening sun.

The chalet is perfect for couples, families and small groups of friends who want to be independent and enjoy the benefits of private parking, veranda and garden, as well as proximity to local attractions, hiking trails, ski slopes, shops and other local amenities. A car is useful, especially for families with young children, but not essential as all guests have free use of the Chamonix Valley buses and trains and door to door transfers from Geneva Airport are easily arranged.

Les Houches is an attractive town with some characterful traditional architecture and has two well-stocked supermarkets (10 minutes walk away) bakeries, bank, post office, tourist office, newsagent, chemist, cycle shop and launderette and there are numerous ski and snowboard shops and rental outlets - the nearest is 150 m from the chalet. There are bars and restaurants but for more variety head for Chamonix's night life - an evening bus runs in the winter high season.

The Chamonix Valley offers a phenomenal amount of skiing and snowboarding for all levels from beginner to advanced. Les Houches has 60 km of pistes rising to 1969 m, and is especially appreciated for its long tree-lined runs, snowpark and World Cup black run, La Verte. The Le Tourchet beginners' slopes are 3 minutes walk from the chalet (open high season only) while the Bellevue cable car is 1.2 km, but easily accessed on the free ski bus, which stops at the bottom of the Le Tourchet lift. The Prarion gondola is a little further on, while the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 10-15 minute drive or bus ride away. Beyond Chamonix, the Flegere and La Balme domains offer fabulously scenic above the tree-line runs, while the Grands Montets is a high-altitude snow-haven where off-piste legends are made. But there again you could always head for Les Contamines, Megeve, Verbier and even through the tunnel to Courmayeur in Italy. A ski hire shop is a 5 minute walk from the chalet.

Exploring, hiking, mountaineering and family activities. With a top location at the foot of the Alps' highest mountain massif, Les Houches is a magnet for alpinists and walkers as well as those content to gaze up at the shimmering glaciers and jagged peaks. Many trails start from the village itself but by hopping on the free bus or train, you have access to all the amazing hiking terrain of the Chamonix Valley and beyond. With its panoramic views of Mt. Blanc, the Grand Balcon Sud is a favourite. From June to September, (the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers train run most of the year) the ski lifts can whisk you up to 2000 metres in a matter of minutes, from where you can contour around the flank of the mountains to get the best of the views with minimum effort! Mountain bikers have plenty of choice of route and the chalet offers the convenience of a large veranda for parking bikes undercover. With its sunny garden, great views and veranda with hammock and easy chairs, Chalet Pic Rouge is perfect for relaxing but there are plenty of family activities on offer too.

About Cathy Harlow

I studied Spanish at university in Scotland and then lived for several years in Italy and Iceland before settling in Cumbria in the north of England. My work in the travel industry as a freelance writer and guide takes me to many amazing places but for scenery I still think the Alps are hard to beat. I come to stay in the chalet four times a year, sometimes to ski and hike with friends and family but also on my own to enjoy just being there. There's something about big snowy mountains that I've always found irresistible. Even doing the routine jobs - cutting the hedge, varnishing the windows and scrubbing the decking down - become a pleasure when you've got those views all around you. My caretaker lives nearby and gets the chalet ready for my guests' arrival. I love the fact that my guests have come from all over the world - not only Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Romania and Switzerland, but South Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, Brazil and the USA!

Cathy Harlow purchased this chalet in 2008

Why Cathy Harlow chose Les Houches

I've always had a passion for mountains, wild places and big views. When I started looking for a place in the French Alps I wanted easy access from the UK and to be close to different skiing and hiking areas. The Chamonix Valley offered both, and you've got Italy and Switzerland on the doorstep too. This cosy little chalet was the first and only place I looked at - I fell in love with it, bought it and that was that! Four years and a lot of hard work down the line I know it was the right decision. Throughout my renovations to the chalet I've tried to retain its character and charm but updated the kitchen, bathroom and furnishings to make them more practical. I love the house, the garden and the views and I always feel happy there. I also like the Chamonix Valley - it's cosmopolitan and buzzing, yet very French and Savoyard.

What makes this chalet unique

It's the open sunny aspect and the great views in all directions, especially looking up at Mt Blanc. In summer I enjoy sitting out on the veranda at sunset watching the peaks glow gold, orange, red and finally pink.

Lovely chalet with gorgeous views

  • 5 of 5

Had a really good week at the chalet. It has everything you need, and nice outdoor space with mountain views. The kids loved the upstairs bit, which they described as a 'Hobbit home'! The weather wasn't overly kind to us, but the chalet was cosy and nice to relax in. Thanks Cathy.

Brilliant chalet in a lovely peaceful Alpine village

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in Chalet Pic Rouge. The kitchen was so very well equipped it allowed us to prepare and cook all our meals rather than eating out. The joining instructions were perfect and everything was as advertised in the initial description. As we are avid walkers we found the array of guide books and maps to be really useful and we used the "Carte d'hôte" virtually every day to take us to a new destination. The weather was excellent during our stay so we ate outside every day on the beautiful terrace. Thank you Cathy for opening up your home so generously. We will be back sure one day to tackle those walks we didn't get a chance to do this time!

A real gem in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

This chalet is every bit as charming as it appears in the photographs and the location at the foot of the Mont Blanc range is simply stunning. It has the most amazing outside space - a real luxury in these parts to be able to enjoy the wraparound views in the utmost comfort. With an incredible selection of chairs, tables and even sofas to take in each aspect, the hardest part was choosing where to sit. In addition, it is located in one of the nicest parts of Les Houches and is within walking distance of two supermarkets and several smaller shops and restaurants.

Th interior is quite small - especially the upstairs which has limited headroom - but this is made clear on the property details. The property is furnished to a very high standard, with the kind of quality fixtures and fittings rarely found at this price. It really felt like staying in a much loved home rather than a holiday let. The lovely kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need - including masses of good quality crockery, cutlery and saucepans.

Praise also to the owner who provided the most comprehensive and honest information about the property and the area.

Chalet Pic Rouge

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a fabulous stay at your beautiful chalet. We can honestly say, it was the best equipped chalet we have ever stayed in, you have thought of everything one could need. The kitchen cupboards were well kitted out with lovely cutlery, cups, dishes for every dish you can think of to make, a raclette machine and even a fondu.

The space outside was brilliant for relaxing in the sun or sitting or lying down in the hammock on the veranda in the shade. Our very big dog enjoyed this too with the exception of the hammock! The BBQ was useful too.

We particularly enjoyed being in a residential area as opposed to a tourist area and all facilities i.e supermarket, post office and pharmacy are within walking distance. The description of the property and it's facilities, layout and location was accurate.

Cathy made the booking process very easy and was always in contact quickly.

We would recommend this chalet without hesitation to our friends.
