About Mary Paffard

I live in California but I am British and I used to live many moons ago in this area of Catalunya, always wanting to come back! So on my frequent visits to the UK I come back to Catalunya and am enjoying the respite that this flat and the environs bring. I am a yoga teacher and teach occasional workshops and trainings in the UK and Spain and you can find more information about me and the flat at the website.

Mary Paffard purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Mary Paffard chose Costa Brava

I purchased this flat after 2 years of looking as I needed something small and easy to look after for my occasional visits to the area and to be able to rent out to others. This particular area of Aiguablava has always been a favorite of mine and I fell in love with the gardens, swimming pool and nearby beach at Dos Calas

What makes this apartment unique

Walking distance to a beach that has no immediate road access so it tends to be quieter than some of the other local beaches, which are also very charming. Pleasant block of flats with a caretaker who looks after the property and in the summer there is a cafe/ small shop on the premises. Covered parking and lovely views. Flat itself is simple, and yet has everything that the normal traveller needs.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We spent just over a week at Dos Calas apartments and had a wonderful time. The apartment we stayed in was well appointed and spacious (great terrace), and the location fantastic. We were close to all the beautiful beaches in the area (Sa Tuna, Sa Riera, Aigua Blava etc) and also the lovely little towns and villages which are great to explore (Begur, Pals, Peratallada). Estelle and Jose Antonio made us feel so welcome and were really friendly and helpful. They even cooked us a delicious BBQ one evening. The swimming pool is fantastic for a quick dip to cool off after a day at the beach or to while away a whole day - the setting is so picturesque. We are looking forward to returning this year!"

wonderful Autumn break

  • 5 of 5

This is a very well equipped clean, comfortable well looked after apartment. There is great terrace which we ate all our meals on and sat out in the evenings. There are beautiful gardens and a lovely swimming pool . The caretakers are on hand and are very pleasant and helpful. It is excellently situated with a 10 minute stroll to the beach and a lovely coast path. An excellent base from which to explore this beautiful area.

Two weeks of Spanish Summer Splendor or Finding our Bliss in the Costa Brava heart of old Catalan!

  • 5 of 5

This flat was the heart and refuge of a 2 week whirlwind vacation on the Mediterranean Sea. We are not typical tourists yet love travel so having a home base to explore from was perfect, though it would have been just as perfect for more sedate travelers that are mostly interested in a leisurely stay.

We started many days with a 10 minute walk to one of two free beaches for a dip or long swim in the sea, then reading and sun. In the afternoons we would often travel, seeking out landmarks like the old walled city of Pals, ceramic markets of La Bisbal d'Empordà, Dali's museum in Figueres, the bird refuge of Emporda Marshes Natural Park and the many different markets, like old Vic in the Pyrenees where their Wednesday market has been held continuously for 1200 years. At the markets we would do our dinner shopping. What a treat to cook the fresh and locally grown produce, cheeses and meats into a romantic dinner shared on the flats balcony under the stars.

On the beach of Auguiblaves, we rented kayaks and paddled a few miles down the coast to an isolated beach and enjoyed a private lunch of bread, cheese, fruit, wine and chocolate. Idyllic!

There are more than enough day trips to fill a 2 week stay but an overnight in Barcelona was a real treat. Just Gaudi's architecture alone would be enough to justify the trip but add on the Boqueria Market, the street vendors, the museums of Picasso and Miro and you have full fledged adventure! It was helpful to have our own rented car for our day excursions around Costa Brava although a car in Barcelona was a burden on the busy streets as public transport options were extensive.

We frequented a small produce shop on the main street of Pals and fell in love with the woman running it. Her fruit and veggies were top shelf and she had 5 barrels of wine in the back of the shop at about 1 euro per liter if you brought your own jug. We fueled many of our lunch picnics with her fruit, veggies and wine, adding some fresh local bread and Mato cheese, the Catalan version of Manchego cheese.

The bottom line is all the people we met were kind, loving, helpful and fun! Many places we visited were recommendations from locals we met on our travels. You do need to be careful for pickpockets and such in Barcelona like any large city but we always felt safe even though we only saw police twice out side the city and both times it was right when we needed help finding something!

We would strongly suggest this rental and Catalanya.

This property is in the most exquisite part of the Costa Brava, an area of small coves and beaches and panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea. The nearest town (3 miles away) Begur has a delightful medieval central area with a pleasant hike to the castle, plenty of good restaurants, a market and basic shopping opportunities...Girona is about 45 minutes drive towards the Pyrenees and has a very interesting medieval quarter and a lively cultural life. There are roman ruins, art centers, and Barcelona is only a 1.5 hour train ride/2 hour drive away. The coastal towns provide a variety of touristic opportunities but this property is really for people who like to be a little off the beaten track, and having a quieter, more low-key experience.
