Have you ever wished your family had a ranch out in the country where you could go kick back, relax, enjoy each other's company, let the kids experience the joy of exploring the great outdoors, not only see stars, but feel like you can almost touch them, and not hear any traffic or city noises?
Have you wished for the kind of day where your biggest decision is, 'Do I sit on the porch and read, watch the birds and see what else wanders by, or go for a walk instead?' That is what our holistically managed ranch, and the Habari guest house is all about. Slow down! Enjoy! Relax, unwind, soak in nature's gifts!
Habari is the original and largest of our ranch’s three guest houses. Habari has had a rich history, starting out as the ranch manager’s quarters, then as overflow rental for Fossil Rim (your host owned and grew Fossil Rim for some 20 years!) and our ranch staff.
Visiting High Hope Ranch has always been a treat, so when we decided to open up for retreats, workshops, and respite for friends, we turned the duplex into an artfully furnished spacious home with bedrooms in three areas. You can fill up the bedrooms with 10 people, with futons and couches for a total of 18-20!
Three living areas flow together so groups can gather in one area, or small groups can spread out. A covered porch runs the entire length of Habari, making it another gathering spot, whether to eat and meet together, or just enjoy the majestic live oaks, pastures, country breezes, birds, deer and surroundings.
Habari is close enough to the county road for quick trips to Fossil Rim’s Overlook and into Glen Rose, but far enough off the road for quiet and solitude.
Habari is a great starting point to explore our ranch's trails and ravines. Habari (“Hello! How are you? You are Welcome Here!” in Swahili) is a “cozy but elegant” (as one guest said!) ranch style house with:
• 26 miles of fossil-laden trails to explore on our organically and sustainably managed Ranch and Sanctuary.
• 2 spacious living rooms separated by a smaller living area with a total of 5 futons
• A fireplace featuring local petrified wood
• Well-equipped, nicely stocked kitchen (you don't have to pack dish soap, salt and pepper or those kinds of basics)
• Covered porch in front and patio in back, a grill and stunning views
• Free wi-fi
• No TV's to distract from the relaxing atmosphere of the ranch.
• Two other smaller guest houses on the ranch (with beds for 5 and 8).
• We welcome well behaved dogs but they must be on a leash at all times, and we have a small pet fee to cover the extra cleaning. Crated dogs get a 50% discount.
But wait, there’s more!
• Central heat/air
• Dishes for 12, gas stove and oven, microwave, Vitamix, (no dishwasher!)
• An outdoor gas grill, propane included
• Fire pit (fire ban permitting)
• Indoor (1) and porch/deck tables (2, one in front, one in back, both patios covered) seat 4-8 people each
• A short walk to see our goats and their guard donkey
• Ranch and nature adventures, tours and experiences are available by pre-arrangement
• Our smaller guest house, Mata’zamo has a 3 stall horse barn, 2 pens and a pasture right out the door, along with miles of trails, but it’s bring your own horse, there is a barn and pastures close to Habari, too!
• Habari’s library reflects our interest in sanctuary, nature and a healthy life and landscape, our CD collection from your Grandma or Great-grandma, board games for family time
• Our ranch has been managed organically for over twenty years, we keep our houses as non-toxic as possible, too.
• We have local naturalists that can help you plan your days, or can even be hired for your own private nature camp experience!
It is easy to get lost at Habari, lost in thought, lost in time, lost from stress and the city life! All of this in our little slice of the Hill Country, just 90 minutes south of the Dallas-Ft Worth area! We invite you to stay at Habari or any of our three guest houses, it’s the best cure we know for nature deficit disorder!!!
Each house is unique enough to provide a very different experience. Habari is great for larger groups, Mata’zamo is our most remote house, our “Bed and Barn”, great for singles, couples or a family, and Casa Kasa is our 2.5-story spa house with an indoor, built in hot tub and infrared sauna.
We welcome you in a way that feels like home away from home, you'll find familiar touches from your own kitchen, including tea, coffee, spices, paper towers, plastic bags - the basics, and maybe new things to try, organic food, composting, recycling, repurposing, reusing and all the comforts of home!
One of our family/team members will meet you at Habari, and help you get oriented to the house and our facilities. If you are bringing your horses, we’ll also match your horses to our trails so you’ll be safe and happy!
We doubt you’ll want to leave, but if you do, we have a nice notebook with a detailed list of local restaurants, we can help you set up tours at Fossil Rim, and have information on other local attractions like Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose’s new Riverwalk and Big Rocks Park, shopping the Square’s antique stores, galleries, clothing stores, weekend farmer’s market and pie shop (plan ahead and order gluten free!!!).
We also have a caterer who will shop for you or cook for you! You will feel like you have the place to yourself, but we have someone on call and on property while you are here.
Send us an email, give us a call, give yourself something to look forward to, and later talk about, book your stay at Habari! If you are still reading, ask about our Reader's Discount!
It's not about me, but about our land, the animals and inviting you to enjoy it with us! I came to work with Fossil Rim in 1988, and stayed!
Sandra Skrei purchased this house in 1988
We bought this ranch because we love Fossil Rim! It's more than being able to dash to their Overlook for a quick look at the giraffes (which we occasionally see along our mutual fence line), grab a bite to eat, buy a gift or visit their contact animal area. It goes beyond hearing the wolves at night. We are also giving Fossil Rim an 1,125 acre gorgeous buffer against development. Combine this with the organic beauty of the land, having miles of walking trails and stunning spots to enjoy the view in areas that are often covered in bluebonnets and other wildflowers, we count ourselves lucky indeed to live here. It is our pleasure to share this special beauty with all of our guests!
We also enjoy helping people explore the Glen Rose area. We never get tired of being compared to Mayberry, it's great to have friendly neighbors and a great town to explore!
Step back to a simpler time! This is your chance to capture the feeling of going back to a special time when our connections were with the land and each other instead of our phones and computers! Come breathe in the open spaces, touch the land, embrace the sun, hug a tree even, pet a goat, it's all about slowing down and reconnecting with the very basic, forgotten pleasures of just being surrounded by nature's best!
Good Afternoon Sandi
Just taking a special moment to let you and staff know that our time spent there at the Ranch was truly spectacular. The family and friends got a chance to do some special bonding with God, nature and each other. It has been said that "hope springs eternal" and we are eternally grateful to you for the hospitality and attention shown to us during our visit at your ranch.
My friend Altha was truly blessed by the peace, and tranquility that the Ranch offered. We had an awesome commune with God on the front porch, and the spirit and freedom to call upon and Praise His name in the environment that He created was truly refreshing.
We look forward to coming back in the future.
Again, thanks. Much love to you. We pray peace and an abundant life is awarded to you.
Regenia and friends
My family of 17 celebrated Thanksgiving at Hope Ranch this year and we could not have asked for a better setting to celebrate. The children loved seeing the animals and our trip to Fossil Rim was spectacular. We have stayed in many VRBO properties and this Ranch was one of the most well equipped for our stay. Thank you Sandy for all your help in arranging our visit. We highly recommend this vacation rental. The Langfords.
Had tickets to the Promise in Glen Rose which started search large enough for four families. Found this five bedroom house just outside of Fossil Rim that was perfect for us. The layout of the house is unique but worked great. Two bedrooms far side of house in living room area and three others near Kitchen. LARGE front porch with view was beautiful. Loved sitting on the porch listening to nature sounds, looking for deer (did see some), reading and just relaxing. Brought small pool for grandson so he played in the water as we watched. We played lots of games outside and drove around the very large property to see many things including star gazing pad, labyrinths, bee house, many benches overlooking awesome views. So much fun. With 3 year old and 3 month old, we didn't do much walking/hiking but still got to see a lot. In addition to seeing The Promise (1st time and has been on my bucket list -- GREAT), we went to Fossil Rim and Dinosaur World. Sandra, host, helped us get discount tickets. Everyone loved both! Sandra was wonderful in preparation and while we were there. I love to cook but under estimated number of eggs needed and she came to the rescue with eggs from her house. Homemade pasta with family and friends were saved thanks to her. I would recommend this place to families wanting to get away. My grown sons complained a little about no TVs BUT adjusted by using wifi to stream their football games. We all loved being outside more. Kitchen was stocked and used often including coffee that was available to us each morning. House was well stocked with paper products, towels, books, music, etc. Only negative, which is part of country living, is we all got bit by chiggers in the yard and walking around. Overall loved High Hope Ranch and having fun with my family in nature.
The High Hope Ranch is just lovely and Sandra was as kind as I expected after visiting with her several times. My kids and grandkids had a great time, especially little ones feeding the goats. Only one issue and not a big deal, but the king size bed off of the kitchen had dirty sheets. My kids had to take off and sleep on blanket. I'm sure they were just trying to hurry and get ready for us to come in. Overall, we had a great time. Thanks to all of you!
The vacation was a relaxing and educational experience for the city dwellers that we are. Being a family of 12 including both very young (a 2 year old) and seniors (70 and 80 years of age), we were not sure all would be able to find interesting things to enjoy. We were soon relieved of that thought when we were met by Sandi, the intelligent and well-versed-in-the-property proprietor. She spoke with us upon arrival, directed the children to follow safe behavior and walked us all through the home. The home was accommodating and provided plenty of space for us all. The kitchen is the only eating area, but with a small folding table that we brought and the chairs for the 4-10 year olds, we were all seated well for meals. Also, the huge covered front porch provides a large eating area for everyone when the weather is not too warm. The well-stocked kitchen made meals easy to prepare along with our favorite items brought from home.
The seniors loved the gorgeous serenity of the front porch and the outdoors with a place for a campfire, plenty of shade provided by the numerous trees and a beautiful pond, all seen from the porch. The parents and the 6 children left on many occasions to visit the prepared, abundantly hilly and forested trails outlined for us at arrival. When the grandchildren left to go exploring with their parents, the seniors eagerly enjoyed the beauty of nature surrounding the house and a quiet respite from the much loved Kiddos. We appreciated the quiet almost as much as hearing from the little ones when they came back to share their adventures.
If the great outdoors with all its interest, quiet and beauty is what you want, this is the place for you. Critter sightings and feeding the nearby goats was a favorite for us all. Be prepared to be without television and land line phones....which may have been the best treat of all!! Believe it or not, the lack of so much busy-ness was just what we all needed. The choices of things to do may be somewhat limited, but that turned out to be the most unexpected, yet excellent part of our 4th of July get-away at High Hope Ranch. Our family was restored and we all hope to return again.
We had a lovely sibling gathering at High Hope Ranch. Nine of stayed in Habari House which easily accommodated eight women and one man. It was decorated in a very homey manner, immaculate and well stocked with the usual supplies one might use. We spent a lot of time outdoors, on the large front porch, in the cozy outside area by the kitchen door, and in a big circle under the big tree next to the house (lots of easy to move chairs are available at the house). Two other family members stayed at beautiful Kasa Casa which easily accommodated us for a wonderful meal they prepared for the group. It was great to have Sandra join us that evening as we learned more about the ranch and the area. We didn't wander outside too much but I'd love to go back in cooler weather and do some exploring on all the trails the ranch has. I think I heard everyone of our group say it was the perfect place for our time together and everyone was happy with our choice. Truly a lovely, peaceful setting and a big comfortable house. Thank you so much to Sandra for all she did to help make it the perfect weekend.
We spent 2 nights at Habari House with 3 families in total. We had the best stay! The house was exceptionally clean when we arrived. We had 6 adults and 6 children with us and there was plenty of room for everyone to sleep comfortably and the kids could be spread out so they didn't keep each other up all night! The ranch hosts were so friendly and hospitable. They stopped by upon our arrival to orient us to the property and made great suggestions for dining in town. At 5:00pm every day, the kids got to go and feed the goats, they even got to walk them on a leash. That was definitely a highlight! The property was very private and the hosts gave us complete privacy. They let us know that they were around if we needed anything, but they left us to do what we pleased! This property is pretty remote, but such easy access to town. Though we are from the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, it felt like we were worlds away. It was just the "staycation" we all needed for the holiday weekend! We would definitely recommend this property and we plan to go back again! Be sure to check out Fossil Rim when you are there!
We are on one of the highest points in Somervell County with several steep ravines and canyons cutting through the property. During good bluebonnet years, our fields look like large, deep blue lakes! Our walking trails take you to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center's fences. Most people don't want to leave when they get to the ranch. Each of our three guest houses has a notebook with information on local attractions like Fossil Rim, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose's Historic Square and other nearby small towns. Three of our ponds have been stocked with catfish and guests are welcome to try their luck with catch and release fishing. TPWD releases trout into the Paluxy River for fly-fishing, and Wheeler Branch Reservoir is popular for bass fishing, kayaking and swimming. One of the state's best public golf courses, Squaw Valley is less than 20 minutes away, as are Dinosaur State Park, Dinosaur World, the Creation Evidences Museum, The Promise and great shopping, browsing, and eating at Glen Rose's downtown square.
We share a fence line with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, we've seen giraffe and heard wolves at night along our trails. We are twelve minutes from Glen Rose's other incredible family attractions: The Paluxy River Walk and Park, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dinosaur World, Brazos River, Historic Courthouse Square, Barnard's Mill and Art Museum. One of the state's best pie shops is on the historic town square, along with galleries, antiques, restaurants, gift shops and a weekend farmers market. There are nearby wineries (Barking Rocks Winery, Red Caboose Winery) and chocolate factories, too. Most people stay on property, but there is plenty to do within a 35 mile drive!
Common Ranch Activities:
Some people can't get off the porch, enjoying quiet activities such as reading, writing, watching the scenery, wildlife and sky. Others roam our 1,125 acres for photography and connecting with nature. Bird watching and casual to strenuous hiking are favorites. Multiple trails wander through woods, pocket prairies, fields and steep ravines frequented by a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, bobwhite, turkey, fox, bobcat, armadillo, raccoon, and rabbits. Game cameras have captured ring-tails and porcupine at Goat Cave. We have Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped vireos, Painted Buntings and lots of other beautiful birds. Habari is close to our barn area, guests often help feed our goats, donkey, horses and chickens. Panoramic views and forever horizons set the scene to include gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The night sky, still not clouded by city lights, allows for astronomical views into space with views of multiple stars, planets, formations, satellites, and meteors.
