About Joan Martinie
As a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, I was surprised when we first time saw the house. Former owners David and Jillayne Arena and their family spent 36 years and did a great job restoring the house.
Joan Martinie purchased this House in 2011

It was nice...
But not amazing! For the amazing photos and anticipation of a spectacular FLW home, it was less than we had hoped. Much of the house was not well cleaned - as if no one had been around in a long time. We found spiders and musty smells. Yard was pretty rough - hopefully will get attention soon. Overall, while it is always special to be in a space originally designed by FLW, it just didn't live up to what we experienced in two other stays in FLW homes. The tour of the neighboring fully restored ASBH was fantastic and it is exciting to see an entire block of Wright's designs. I would recommend this for more of a large group looking for a fun place than true FLW architecture fans. For example: The beds placed on what were originally the rear "sleeping porches" were really odd. Some nice sitting spaces there for morning coffee and reading would really make the spaces much better. And one of the most authentic areas - the living room - was crammed with furniture.
Thank you for your review!
I am sorry that we had a family emergency, we were out of town, and could not evaluate the cleaning team's job. We are sorry for my husband could not give you the tour. Sorry for all inconvenience in your stay.
We added more furniture in the house because people complained there were not enough place to sit, especially when they have family reunion (up to 13 people stay, or they has visitors). It made most arguments that my husband and I. He moved some furniture to basement many times. It is not easy to make the house for 2 people and 9 (or 13 people) people happy. Like the price setting , we set up flat rate for 9 people, when two people stay has to pay the full price, they felt unfair for them. We reduced the price for two people, if they have more than two people, they do not like additional charge. It is hard to balance for small and large group, and FLW fans and not FLW fans to stay.
Thanks for your review. We may remove some furniture.
It was delightful spending time surrounded by Frank Lloyd Wright’s design!
Beautifully restored, well maintained, modern conveniences- great location!
Thank you for your support!
Wonderful house - Neighborhood a concern.
The house was beautiful and comfortable, plenty of room and a great home away from home for our visit to Milwaukee. The owners, Steve and Joan were wonderful - we arrived late with a plane delay, they arranged parking permits for us, and allowed a late check out to make the most of our last day in Milwaukee. Unfortunately, we didn't sleep well the last two nights of our four night stay. There was an incident on the street in front of the home involving gunshots and someone hiding in the yard. We were awoken to the commotion and police with flashlights in the backyard. My Dad also witnessed a theft, out the front window. I’m sure these were isolated incidents and I thought hard about publishing this as the home and the owners really are wonderful, but I just didn’t feel good about avoiding the honesty of our experience. I’m not sure I’d stay in the neighborhood again as I didn’t feel safe.
We appreciate your kind words for us and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house. Regarding the unfortunate disturbance, we reached out to the local alderman and learned that an early morning two people fight at a restaurant in another neighborhood was taken to the streets and continued while driving through ours. As the reviewer wrote, it was an isolated incident—nothing like it has happened in the six years we owned the house. We hope this sad event does not discourage visits to our historic property.

Girls weekend at the Frank Lloyd Wright house
We had a fabulous time in this beautiful house for a girls' weekend! The location was fantastic! We were close to everything we want to do, and not far from stores, etc that we needed! The house easily slept all 7 of us girls! We would definitely recommend the property - and would stay again! Thank you to Steve and Joan for sharing this lovely home!
Thank you so much for your support! We appreciate your business!

FLW Concrete House!
Plenty of space for two couples and a fascinating opportunity to stay in one of FLW's rare concrete houses--or rather two concrete residences now joined as one. It was really great that the hosts provided background information about they house. They were also flexible and communicative and everything we needed was provided for. Also a convenient location for zooming all around the city, from downtown to Bay View, Third Ward, etc.
Thank you so much for your support! Hope to see you again in the future.
