About Helen Young
I am a retired hospitality professional and was the owner and manager of a 28 room luxury inn. I have lots of experience of travel and enjoy making a great experience for other travellers. I am assisted by Susan who will be your onsite contact. Susan lives very nearby and is a long time resident of the area: in short a great resource.
Helen Young purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Helen Young chose Barnard Castle
My parents have owned this property for years and operated it as a five star B and B before retiring. We have kept it in the family because it is a spectacular setting and a lovely building that is just the right size for a private bolthole. Not to mention the wonderful mix of privacy with good walking accessibility to a charming market town. It is hard to match the loveliness of Teesdale!
What makes this Cottage unique
The great old stone walls throughout add a lovely authenticity to River Run Cottage. That and updated systems that ensure coziness, a great hot bath and good internet connections. We like our comforts! The river is literally just outside the kitchen door and our new conservatory means you can enjoy it in all seasons. The sound is simply one of the most relaxing imaginable. It is also fun to watch the kayakers tumble over the falls or fly fishermen angling for a catch. BTW we have a great resource for learning fly fishing if you are intrigued: Stuart is a great teacher and great character. We have televisions both up and downstairs as well as a wood burner on each floor. While we are a five minute walk to town through a lovely old churchyard and on a very well frequented regional walking trail called The Teesdale Way, the cottage turns its back onto the lane and so it feels very private.

River Run Cottage is a five star experience
River Run is an exceptional cottage in a wonderful location, literally on the bank of the Tees River. Both the sunroom and the outdoor patio overlook a series of scenic rapids. The cottage is a completely updated, very comfortable architectural gem. Helen, the owner, could not have been more helpful or accommodating. We were delighted with our experience.
This review was mistakenly made as a four star review and the guest asked to have it altered to a five star review to match his written comment: not apparently possible! The computer says “No”! He was kind enough to bring this error to our attention....thanks Doug. As someone who routinely presses “Send” with goof ups, I understand how it can happen.
We have stayed in many very nice VRBO’s over the years but the River Run Cottage is probably the best. It has a nice layout, great furnishings and is well-equipped. This cottage, once associated with the old mill next door, has been thoroughly renovated with modern conveniences. The sunroom provides a comfortable all-weather room to relax and enjoy the views of the River Tees. The cottage was immaculate when we checked in.
We stayed in River Run Cottage for a week and truly hated to leave. When we first arrived and entered the cottage our jaws literally dropped at how gorgeous and comfortable the cottage was. You could easily spend your entire stay never leaving the cottage - just relaxing, reading, listening to music, watching TV, or just lounging in the sunroom or one of the outdoor decks watching the river flow by. However, should you choose to leave the cottage there are lots of things to do in the Barnard Castle area.
I would not hesitate for a nano-second to recommend River Run. Truly, it is absolutely outstanding!
What a way to make our day! We are so glad you liked the stay even with some gloomy UK weather thrown in. Look forward to hosting you again if you come to the UK or at our vacation rental in Niagara, if your travels bring you to Ontario.
Perfect River Cottage
Spotlessly clean and neat as a pin.
This stone cottage, perched on the edge of the River Tees, has been completely remodeled to the highest standards, while retaining the charm and character of its original classic style.
Tucked away in a park like setting, yet only a few minutes walk to the centre of town with all its pubs, restaurants and shops.
Loved our stay.
Thank you for your kind comments. So glad you were comfortable and thank you for leaving our home in great shape. We enjoy hosting refugees from too much sunshine: a problem we are well equipped to manage in the UK!
Thanks so much for your kind comments!
We loved the cottage every attention to detail has been thought of, location is beautiful. Due to unforeseen circumsantces we had to cut short the holiday, would go again.
The house, village, river, and footpaths are perfect and supply everything one could wish. We couldn't be happier with the long walks along the river, trips into the village for a favorite treat, or lounging in the solarium listening to the river while hoping to catch a glimpse of a river otter. We will be sure to come back again. Many thanks to Sue and Helen for making a wonderful holiday.
We feel privileged to share the spot with our guests: it is a lovely place to enjoy both town and country.
There are a considerable number of adventure activities available at Hamsterley Forest which is about a half hour drive
