Beautifully restored farmhouse with large swimming pool set in French countryside. Authentic stone house and barns tastefully rebuilt as a family home with original Quercynoise character intact, but the light and air of a California villa. With 3 bedroom suites, plus a loft bedroom, and 3,000 square feet, the house is easy and comfortable for families. Great kitchen, fully equipped. Terraces adjoin living areas for indoor/outdoor living and al fresco dining. Medieval hillside towns of St. Cirq Lapopie and Calvignac within a few minutes. Cajarc, an ancient Roman bastide town, has all services, including good shopping, bank, post office, bakeries, restaurants, plus a riverside marina.
I am a California landscape architect who has been spending time in France since I was in college. I discovered the Lot by accident about 20 years ago, and count myself lucky to have been able to spend time here. The Lot is really heaven-on-earth, a place away from time. Swimming in the pool on a glorious summer day, looking out over the fields and cliffs, having spent the morning at the fresh market in a nearby town, looking forward to lunch on the terrace may be as good as it gets. My daughters and their families love this spot too, and come whenever they can. They say it's a vacation for them as well as their children.
Sheila Brady purchased this house in 2000
This is the second property I have owned in the Lot. When I first saw this site, I knew I had to buy it, even if the buildings were in ruins. There was a lovely stone arch in the barn, which is now the arch between the kitchen and entry. I had already fallen in love with the limestone of Quercy, and this house had ancient stones. Lots of love and the superb work of French stonemasons have gone into the restoration, and all who have seen it seem to agree: it is a unique place, with a truly marvelous sense of place.
Peace, tranquility---combined with so many things to do and places to see. You can comfortably and happily stay home and enjoy the house, or go wandering and exploring---all at your finger-tips. There is so much to do in the Lot that you find you don't want to go further.
We had a wonderful time in this lovely house. What makes it different from many other houses we have seen is that the house and the garden haven been designed and decorated with great taste. An excellent combination of comfort and simplicity. the view from the house, over the river on the rocks on the other side. Around you only farm fields and wood, the nearest neighbor half a kilometer away. and this all completed with a great and good size pool and a petanque court.
We have just returned home from the most wonderful time in this renovated farmhouse in the Lot valley and know that the memories will stay with us forever! The atmosphere of quiet tranquility was underlined by the buzzing of the bees working in the lavender bushes and the views across the crystal clear pool to the valley and cliffs beyond were food for the soul. We thoroughly recommend this property to all who seek peace and quiet in the comfort of a thoughtfully restored, airy and light Quercy farmhouse. You will not regret your decision - guaranteed!
We highly recommend this lovely modernized stone farmhouse situated in the middle of farm land overlooking the cliffs rising above the Lot River. We lived mostly in the kitchen/dining area, appreciating the fully equipped modern kitchen and view of the lap swimming pool. We spent time walking the surrounding country roads, driving into the charming village of Cajarc and visiting other spectacular villages near bye. We hope to return some day.
For me, a good holiday is judged by the evening meals. Can you relax, outdoors, with good food, a bottle of wine, a beautiful view and some pals to share it with? Was the day well spent and is there plenty to talk of? Is everyone only just the right side of tired out? Maison Bons delivers this in spades. Thoroughly recommended for keen cyclists, walkers and horse riders.
My wife and I spent a week at this tranquil country home for our recent anniversary trip to France. It was the perfect place to relax, cook (the kitchen is amazing), and swim, and a terrific home base for exploring all this region has to offer. St. Cirq, Cajarc, Figeac, and many other charming, historical French towns are close by. Restaurants, bakeries, markets, medieval sights, and walking trails are all a short drive, but the home is wonderfully secluded with farmland all around the property. Although it was just the two of us on this trip, we would highly recommend this home for families and groups with an interest in this part of France. It is a truly special place!
This is a really beautiful home and renovated in keeping with the surrounding Quercy style homes. I travelled with my extended family including 6 adults and 2 x 10 year old children and there was something for everyone. Having stayed in the Dordogne a couple of times, I was really surprised by just how peaceful the Lot valley was in comparison. The 2 weeks we spent there were mostly taken up by lazing around the really nice pool, preparing great meals and watching the sun set across the beautiful valley. Having said that the house was a great base for visiting Pech-Merle caves (highly recommended), St Cirq Lapopie, Rocamadour and canoeing down the Cele river.
Although the house is renovated in keeping with the surrounding architectural style there is all the modern conveniences that is needed and the kitchen, in particular, was very popular. We will definitely return.
House is located within a Natural Regional Park of France, a beautiful bucolic landscape that follows the Lot River. The best kept secret in France, the Lot combines the wonderful aspects of a peaceful, serene place with all the amenities of modern living. Next door to the very popular Dordogne Region, the Lot offers even more spectacular scenery, prehistoric caves, medieval hill towns and Roman villages, troglodyte ruins, castles, navigable rivers, and secret swimming holes---all without the crowds. The house is on a country lane in farm country, on a bluff above the Lot River. Beautiful views to limestone cliffs above the Lot, and the medieval town of Calvignac in the distance. Medieval and picturesque St. Cirq Lapopie, voted by the French their favorite 'most beautiful village of France' is a few kilometers down the road, where we often go for an evening drink and stroll. The Lot is known for gastronomy, the best of France. My favorite activity in the Lot is hiking. You can walk out the door and just keep going, on ancient trails that wander along the river, the limestone formations, through oak woodlands. The famous San Juan de Compostela pilgrimage route passes near the house. There are historic towns, endless explorations to ruins, historic caves, winding country lanes great for biking and hiking, and wonderful food with colorful fresh markets every day specializing in authentic local foods. A cook's dream. There are great local restaurants, where you can dine on terraces over the river and enjoy the fine cuisine and river views. The people who live in the Lot are friendly and helpful, and very pleased to have visitors. Once you have discovered the Lot, you will return again and again.
