WINNER of 'BEST HOUSE' 2014 at the Architecture Ireland Awards- RIAI

ARCHITECT: Michael Kelly & Dan Costelloe

'A crisp and effective two story insert within the existing walls of a ruined 19th century farm building the project provides open and uncluttered domestic spaces of great charm. The free standing timber post and beam structural system provides a robust framework which allows for rich and innovative thinking throughout the planning organisation and the project’s sophisticated detail design development. Noteworthy are its beautiful roof lanterns and the clever use of interstitial space between old and new.'

The Cow House is a recently restored 19th Century farm building set in the grounds of June Blake's internationally acclaimed garden. This beautiful contemporary renovation was designed by Architect's Michael Kelly and Dan Costelloe. The Cow House has its own timber and glass elevation set back behind the restored granite elevation. It has an independent ground floor structure of timber posts, timber/steel flitch beams and timber joists, supporting first floor timber structural frames which in turn support the 15m long laminated timber ridge beam. This enables the rafters to span from the ridge to the walls permitting the roof space to accommodate two en-suite bedrooms. The partitions are formed from European birch faced plywood.

The ground floor is one space for cooking, dining and sitting. The floor is a heated polished concrete floor cast from local sand and granite. The floor steps as the original cow houses stepped. The kitchen island is formed from the same cast concrete. The granite walls on the east and south have been lined with solid Douglas Fir.

The stairs is baroque in conception and design. The lower section is formed from cast concrete, dense, solid and load bearing in contrast with the upper section, a semi solid hanging assembly of laminated plywood.

Upstairs there are two unique bedrooms with glass lined en suite bathrooms. Four bespoke roof lights allow light and sunshine to animate all spaces within the house.

The contemporary garden is set within the grounds of a Victorian Steward's house and farmyard. 'June Blake's Garden is that rare thing, a plant collector’s paradise with a strong design framework. The planting is bold, brave and brilliant.' Jane Powers, Sunday Times.' The effect is startling in it's beauty, like the spilt content's of a jewellery box'. Fionnula Fallon, The Irish Garden. ' June's new garden is a rare treat, a modern garden that draws in the visitor and wraps them in flowers, welcoming yet stylish, and an example of virtuoso design and expert plantsmanship.' Shirley Lanigan, The 100 Best Gardens in Ireland.

The Cow House is a dream location for garden lovers. It is within walking distance of the acclaimed Hunting Brook Garden owned by June’s brother Jimi. Russborough House and Garden is 5 only km from The Cow House. Other gardens within a short distance are Mount Usher, Powerscourt and The Dillon Garden. There are many other interesting private gardens which June has access to.

This is a great house and the garden in mid-June was just lovely. Great location and the owners were really welcoming. Thank you for the garden recommendations!! We would definitely go back.

Loved our time in Wicklow and at June Blake's Cow House

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Cow House. June's garden is amazing, and Dara, June's son who lives across the courtyard, was such a great resource for us. While I can understand previous comments about noise traveling easily in the house, it did not, in our case, negatively affect our enjoyment of the space. The space is creative and contemporary, and felt quite tranquil to us. The beds and linens were extremely comfortable, and the ability to black out the space made for quality sleep! The kitchen is very nicely equipped, and we were able to fix meals at home easily.

We'll hope to visit again, and are so grateful to June, and her family for their warmth and hospitality.

Beautiful property - the house was modern but still warm and cozy. The garden was stunning!

Wonderful experience! We coordinated the booking with June's daughter, Niamh. She was very helpful, offering dinner suggestions and answering questions about the area. We had the pleasure of meeting June on arrival - she gave us a brief overview of the home and gave us some suggestions for restaurants and things to do in the area. she also picked up a fresh loaf of bread along with butter and jam for us to enjoy in the morning.

We met her son Dara about an hour later - he lives across the courtyard and stopped by to ensure we were able to connect to the wifi. He was very kind and let us know how to reach him if we needed anything.

The house was cozy, and the heated floors were an excellent touch! Two well sized bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, the only drawback was the layout of the shower. There's no separation between the shower and the rest of the bathroom, so expect everything to get wet. It's a small price to pay for such a lovely house.

It rained the entire time we were there, so I didn't get to enjoy the garden until the day we were leaving. I didn't want to miss it, so I took a stroll in the rain just before we departed. It's a must see! Walk in the rain if you need to! It's very easy to see June's passion for her garden - she was out working in it for a good portion of our stay. It was beautifully curated - my only regret is that we missed the tulips!

If I make it back to Ireland, I would stay here again!

Very easy to book, check in and out, and communicate with the owner. Very friendly and welcoming, and the property was perfect for two couples. Many things to see and do nearby, and places to eat and shop as well. Highly recommend it!
