About the property

1860 Row House Steps From The Capitol

At the heart of historic Eastern Market, is a rowhouse that was on the Historic Restoration Home Tour just waiting for you and your family! One of the few rowhouses that have been completely modernized while still maintaining the old Federal charm, it will be comfortable and exactly what you are looking for as you tour the Nations Capitol. Steps away from the Metro, Barracks Row shopping and eating, Nationals Stadium and the Capitol itself, this location cannot be beat! Did we also mention we have a backyard? Most houses do not on the hill large enough for outdoor bbq-ing. So grab your groceries for the week down the street at the two grocery stores (Safeway and Harris Teeter) and save some money while you are here. We also have an alarm system and handyman available 24/7 should you need assistance.

Enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

There were six of us so we each were two to a bedroom (there are 3 bedrooms - one with a king, one with a double and one with two twins) and we really enjoyed our stay. The kitchen was large and the patio was a great place to hang out. The basement has a comfy TV space. The bedrooms were also comfortable and bathrooms very nice. It's a beautiful and very clean vintage home with beautiful furnishings and decor in a great location. It's about a mile to the Capitol Building and only a few blocks from Eastern Market metro stop. The neighborhood is safe. There are red bikes at the end of the block/East Capitol Street so that's very convenient. We didn't have a car so used the metro, uber, red bikes and walked everywhere and it worked out great. Lots of great restaurants just a few blocks away (just yelp to find more information.) Be aware that there is a shortage of space to put your things - like your suitcase and bathroom items - but we made it work. The steps are steep but you get used to that. The rugs are also slippery so we just put them aside. The owners were good about helping us with the TV and communicating with us about our stay. Overall we had a great time and would return - we recommend this home.

Absolutely amazing

  • 5 of 5

The property and house was absolutely clean, well kept and one of the best places we have stayed at for a family of seven. The kitchen had everything if not more than what you have in your own home. The bathrooms are clean, modern and plenty of towels. Bedrooms, comfortable and very clean. Family room was perfect for the five young adults while mom and dad relaxed in the back yard. The backyard, which is unusual in DC, is beautiful and had lots of patio furniture including lounge chairs. The area is totally safe and well kept. Parking, not even an issue. Parked the two cars it in one spot and didn't move it for six days. The neighbors were very nice and provided ideas of places to go and eat. The last comment, Chantal, can't say enough on how responsive, occomidating and nice she was. We will def return.

everything you need

  • 4 of 5

Very personal home with an eclectic mix of themes and nic naks in all the rooms which would not be good if you have small children, . All you need for a visit to Washington as close to metro and handy for all the sights.Very well equipped and clean. Very comfortable accommodation but would not suit anyone with mobility issues as narrow stairs to den and up to bedrooms. Some of the pictures advertising the property could be updated as kitchen table not as seen and also could do with more seating in den for watching TV as only one settee which is not good for 5 adults. Owner was easy to contact but could have done with house instructions sent earlier before we travelled as was unsure of how to access house but managed to get owner on the phone easily enough. all together was great for our needs as a family. One issue is that there is nowhere to hang clothes or use any drawers as all full with owners stuff but we just lived out of our suitcases, fine with us but some folk may not like it especially if staying any length of time. A lovely home which was a pleasure to visit and would recommend it.

Nice place to stay on vacation

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 5, 4 adults and 1 child stayed at this lovely home. We arrived early, the owners were very nice and accommodated the dilemma by suggesting we to drop off our luggage. Then we headed out to explore DC. We still haven't received the email sent informing that the property would not be ready until 4 pm through VRBO. The house has 3 bedrooms upstairs; one of those bedrooms has 2 twin size beds (totaling 4 beds). The twin beds were long enough for an adult to sleep in. The lower level (basement) is the family room with a sofa and television. The family room is spacious, and plenty of blankets were provided. There were 2 air mattresses partially inflated in the corner. Our family member chose to sleep on the sofa instead. There also was a washer and dryer on the lower level. The house has air condition. The house has 2 full bathrooms and a 1/2 bathroom; which worked out wonderfully. Towels were provided, you should bring your own wash cloths. The kitchen is stocked with pots, skillets, cooking utensils, grilling utensils, toaster, microwave, drinking glasses dish towels, etc. If you plan on cooking, bring storage containers to store leftovers, and your own spices. We used the grill on the deck in the backyard. We googled a small Mom and Pop grocery store (Motts) where we picked up pancake syrup and cold cereal about 4 blocks away. The Eastern Market is very close and has fresh food already prepared and food to cook: meat, vegetables, cheese, butter, fruit, etc. Also there were restaurants, shops, 7-Eleven and a CVS in walking distance. This property is close to the Eastern Market Metro Station (10 minute walk). It is also in walking distance to the Capitol. The property is close to the visitor attractions, within 10-15 minute Metro ride. We used the Metro and Lyft to get around town. The neighborhood is safe, and the neighborhood people were friendly. It appears that the owners live in the house when not renting. The owners have very nice knick-knacks all around the house for decoration. We lived out of our suitcases, and this worked fine for us. The owners were very nice, and available for questions or concerns by phone or in person. The owner was on site part of the time; there is a separate apartment under the kitchen. Our family highly recommends this rental.

The most beautiful house I've stayed

  • 5 of 5

The house is very beautiful with delicate decorations. The owner is very kind and helpful to answer my questions. It is 12 min walk to capitol hill and the neighborhood is safe and quite. This was one of the best experience I've ever had and I strongly recommend the place. We used lyft to go anywhere and the car always came in minutes. Eastern market is very close where we get meat, vegetables and cheese, and there's another 10 min walk grocery store Yes, organic, which is a little pricy but has everything we needed.

Good stay - Could be the perfect rental with some changes

  • 3 of 5

We had a great stay in DC. This house worked out for us as we had 5-6 people in our group.

First the good:

1) Great location. 5-10 minute walk from the Eastern Market Metro, bunch of restaurants within walking distance and the Market itself.

2) The house is clean

3) The house has air conditioning

4) The owners were available and flexible

The not so good:

1)The house seems to be the owners’ primary residence. Thus it is full of their things. Every closet and drawer was jammed packed with their things and we had no room to store anything. We found it tough to live out of our suitcases for a week-long trip. The house is also furnished with nice but large furniture and there is little room to move around once your suitcases are placed on the floor.

2) The owners occupy the apartment downstairs while the house is being rented. This was awkward as they came and asked for their mail, had a visitor stop by for them and spent one afternoon/evening hanging out, drinking and smoking in the side yard right under the kitchen window. The bottles, and ashtray were left out for the remainder of the week which is dangerous if you have young kids. Also, the owners walked past the bottles, glasses and ashtrays multiple times without removing them.

3) The only comfortable place to sit is in the basement. The formal living room does not have a television and the furniture is not very comfortable. There are two televisions, one in the basement and one in the master bedroom. There is a large, wobbly round table in the kitchen with wooden chairs that are very uncomfortable. This table is too large for the area and blocks the French doors to the patio and is an accident waiting to happen if you have kids. The kitchen table is also not the one pictured on the rental site.

4) The patio door has a lock that works a little differently and there are no written instructions on how to properly lock the door.

5) The patio is very nice and is furnished with a table, chairs and a grill. The table did not have a glass top so we were unable to use it. The owner did explain and apologize for the lack of the glass explaining that it cracked last winter. We were puzzled why they had not replaced it as they had ample time to do so. We had a difficult time operating the grill and while the owner was available to help, it would have been nice to have written instructions.

6) It would be nice if the owners provided paper towels and tissues.
