Basil is an architect and his wife Elsabé is a historian. In 2012 they relocated to Hermanus from Johannesburg, where they had previously resided for approximately 30 years.
They have a son who stays in London and a daughter who recently moved to Pretoria with her husband and four young sons, having stayed at 13 Wandel Street in the Gardens since 2013.
